Bonzo's drumming on this track is insane!! Not one other band can top Zeppelin, they are in another league 😊

A key thing about Zeppelin is that you had two of the most in-demand London studio musicians of that era... Page and Jones. Then you had two of the most talented up-and-coming musicians, Plant and Bonham, that Jimmy recruited to help achieve his Rock vision. 🤙😎

Great reaction to one of my favorite Zepp songs. Bonham is a beast on this one. Plant recorded this album while healing from a car accident, in a wheelchair. ✌️♥️🎶

I would say that it is more evocative of a running battle in ancient times, than a car chase. The title leads one in that direction before the music even starts.

I always thought "Presence" was an underrated album. Was a teen when it came out. Great reaction rock on.

Yes Plant was in a wheelchair while recording this album, he was in one for about a year not knowing if he’d walk again. They were in Greece his wife Maureen was driving, she lost control & hit a tree. She had severe head injuries, Robert broke his elbow & damaged his leg really bad. Their children had minor injuries, Page’s daughter was with them, she was un injured. Yes Plant hated being away from his family in California to record this, while he & Maureen were both recovering.

This song has a combination of influences and had a working title of "the wheelchair song" since singer Robert Plant was recuperating from a car accident while recording it. It basically tells the story of trips Jimmy and Robert took to Morocco. The tongue-in-cheek title is a reference to the broken leg (and other injuries) Robert sustained in the crash; being compared to Achilles' weak heel, where if Achilles got hit there, he would die. There's a bit of William Blake's poetry when he mentions Albion. "Albion" used to be a poetic way to describe Britain. The "mighty arms of Atlas" refer both to the mythology of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, as well as the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This song is intense. I consider it the last of their "Epics" along with Stairway and Kashmir. Jimmy had 6 guitar tracks and managed to assemble and complete the entire song in one night. The album as a whole was completed in 18 days; the fastest they'd worked since their debut album. The staccato drumming sounds like a machine gun and John Paul Jones' galloping bass line imply swift, anxious movement. Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart readily admit they stole the bass line for their song Barracuda. Robert tells a story about a time he had a friend over to visit and while they chatted, he had music playing. At one point, he stepped out of the room and shortly thereafter, his guest came looking for him and told him they didn't want to be in the room alone anymore because the music playing was too intense. Intrigued, Robert came back to the room and the song playing was Achilles. There were a lot of changes going on during the recording of this album (Presence); new musical genres like punk were threatening to overthrow bands like Zeppelin's relevance, Robert was rethinking the band dynamics and his place in it as well as his life's path in general. He didn't want to be away from his family during the accident's aftermath and was angry at both manager Peter Grant and Jimmy because he felt they were unsympathetic. This entire album is massively underrated. It's very stripped down and is full of intensity, anxiety, anger, pain, - a lot of difficult emotions.

I think you've combined Zep stories. In a interview with plant he stated in order to remain a tax exile and not pay the 90% english tax rate they were required to spend 6 months and one day outside of the country. The song is about their travels around the world not just Morocco which is the song Kashmir. They open " it was an April morning when they told us we should go" was management telling them to get out of England. The line " below the streets that steam and hiss the devil's in his hole" is a direct reference to steaming manhole covers in NYC. oh to ride the wind to tread the air above the din" references their worldwide travels in their Jet airplane, and so on and so on.

The galloping beat of Bonzo’s in this song was the inspiration for Heart’s Barracuda. Heart covered a lot of Zeppelin in their early days in the clubs.

Correct. Also take note of “Magic Man”- quite derivative of “The Immigrant Song”.

To see this performed live by Zep, I think a handful of times on video, was spectacular. One, knebworth 79 when Jimmy was so gaunt from Heroin, but still they played the hell out of that tune.

This song is really amazing live, I highly suggest watching it. The band had said this was their hardest song to do live, my guess because it’s hard & fast all the way through. Though we hear a little of JPJ, & Plants vocals are always amazing, Page & Bonham ran away with this song. Believe it or not, the live really is far greater then the studio.

A lot of people think this sounds like horses racing across a battlefield, ancient rather than modern because of the classic references in the song.
