These 4 had such talent and played so well together. Unlike other bands, there was no egos clashing, and they actually 'fed' off each other, taking turns and following, then leading. They were so in sync with each other musically that when John Bonham passed, they knew they couldn't get the 'magic' with someone else.

John Paul Jones also plays piano, organ, synthesizer, mandolin, and is an amazing arranger. Like in Kashmir, that isn't an orchestra that is JPJ playing a Melton (an early synthesizer that sounds like strings), and he wrote those parts. He is the sometimes unsung genius. Secret weapon. They are all insanely good at what they do.

Really enjoyed this reaction! This song is a heavy metal gospel march. We are marching on this to the battle field for our Lord! And when the music stops and Robert Plant tells out, "Oh, my Jesus!"...that takes me to church every time! I love how the song changes time signatures from heavy to funky to the most triumphant arena rock stride anyone has ever heard. That's what people sometimes forget, this band was heavy but funky! And every part played by every member of the group fits in perfectly, from Jimmy Page's slide guitar riffs to Robert Plant wailing, "Ooohwhooooaaaahhh! Yeah, yeah!" To Jonesy holding down a steady, counterpoint on the bass and Bonzo switching up the drum beats from metal march to a dance rhythm. There's a live video of Zep playing this at Earl's Court in 1975 that is simply amazing. Also, I would be remiss if I didnt recommend my favorite Led Zeppelin song, How Many More Times; you gotta check that out, especially if you find a live version of it!

...it's an homage and interpretation of several other songs, notable by one by Willie Johnson about 1928. Dylan also interpreted it, in the early 60s. Then Zeppelin kick started it and made it soar with another re-interpretation.

So, Van, you've now joined your daughter Naia in becoming a Zep head! Good for you. This is a Blind Willie Johnson tune, but augmented by bits from 9 or 10 other old blues belters. Robert and Jimmy were both blues freaks in England (there are lots, you know)- JPJ was more classical/ pop; Bonzo was a jazz drummer til Robert convinced him to join Robert's prior band: Band of Joy. Jimmy and Robert frequently do those call and response efforts, and they always try to fool the other, then laugh and laugh! Check out 'You Shook Me' for a great example. btw Robert plays killer harmonica, and JPJ plays keys, guitar, mandolin (and probably more) as well as bass. And Jimmy did the production wizardry (he and JP were big time session musicians in London and got to know ALL the tricks). btw, Naia is crushing on Robert...

If you played bongos you have to check out Moby Dick live. John Bonham has a spectacular solo

Love your reaction! PG County girl here. DC was always a huge Zeppelin city, meaning the radio stations played them constantly. Friends visiting from other parts of the country would always notice it.

Hi LFR. Led Zeppelin is my favorite Rock Band too. to me, they are the best Rock Band ever. They're versatile, you never know what to expect, but always give you, soul and funkiness in their music. The four of them are great musicians and Robert Plant's voice seduces you like the devil, no one can compete with his vocals, and as if that wasn't more than enough, he is a gorgeous man, sexy, sexy.
