The greatest rock song of the 20th Century inspired by the greatest book of the 20th Century- it has so many Tolkien references- "when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving" is an allusion to the desire of the Elves (including Galadriel) to return to Valinor. Robert Plant has admitted on a number of occasions the profound influence that reading Lord of the Rings had on him and it's not the only Zeppelin song with explicit references- there are many more.

I saw Queen in 1975, had front row center stage, My very first concert, they had just released their 2nd album. Brian May is just smoking the guitar, but his facial expression would be like ( in a British accent, blimey, did I forget to turn the water off when I left the house) . 45 years later and that still amazes me, it was at the what is now called, The Tobin Center in San Antonio, TX, then it was the municipal auditorium and probably didnt seat but maybe 2000 or so, and it didnt even sell out, but they performed as if 20,000 were there. The important thing is, I was there, only 17 at the time but I knew I had just witnessed greatness. I grew up with Zeppelin. I never knew just what we had... I thought then, that they were the greatest of all time. Now decades later, I am going through a Led Zeppelin renaissance (along with AC/DC Bon Scott era) and little has changed my mind. One person in all that time I take as seriously as Zeppelin since that era - P.J. Harvey. Not that there are not greats all along the way or currently. Just - not Led Zeppelin. They are a phenomena. And I find myself intrigued by watching young people react to them.

Lyrics are often more poetic than meaningful, for this and many other songs there is really no point in trying to overanalyze them or feel that you have to fully understand them.
