Lionel is at his best when he writes love songs. IMO he is the greatest writer of love songs of the R&R/R&B era. Try "Easy", "My Love", "Sail On", "Penny Lover", "You Are", Ballerina Girl", "Endless Love", "Just To Be Close To You", "Hello", "Still", "Zoom" and lots of others.

Twon, I attended Tuskegee Institute(University) with Lionel and the Commodores. It was nothing to see them on the yard or in the cafeteria. The Commodores were the house band at the Elks Lodge on fish fry Friday's. Got to know the guys and it was great to see them become successful. Lionel's written so much music. In addition to what others have mentioned, check out Penny Lover and Stuck On You. Also Lionel wrote Lady for Kenny Rogers. Most of the Commodores songs were written by Lionel. Looking forward to more reactions to the Commodores and Lionel. Really enjoy your reactions!

Ha! My dad had a brush with (future) fame back then. He ran a shoe store in Lanett, AL, and one day three or four young black dudes came in saying that they were in a band that was on its way to play a showcase in New York before some record executives, and they needed new shoes to look sharp. He ended up selling new shoes to half of the Commodores before he or anyone else knew who they were. He asked them the name of the band, and they told him, and he said, "Okay, cool, I'll listen for you on the radio. Good luck." Within a couple of years, they were all over the radio. LOL

His Commodores stuff is more R and B vibes, he crossed over into pop and even some country if you listen to his collaboration with Alabama " Deep River Woman" you won't be disappointed. Some of his hits in the 80's, Hello, Penny Lover, and of COurse his duet with Diana Ross, Endless Love.

Lionel was a hit machine for years, for lots of different folks. He glided easily between genres, writing what you were thinking of as "straight forward R&B" like "Three Times a Lady" and "Lady" and a bunch of commodores hits; and pop songs like "You Are" or "Running With the Night", but also country-tinged stuff like "Deep River Woman" (Which is fucking legend, I love that song) and super ballads like "Endless Love" or "Hello." And Hello is a cultural touchstone, too, god that song was HUGE and has a really identifiable (and, in retrospect, kind of stalkery and creepy) video (so many stalkery videos/songs in the 80s!) I do love You Are. Great at karoake. :)

Lionel came from superstar R&B band, them went solo in 80s,...and with many of his songs, like this one, he was showing his range in ability to do different styles. This song will make you smile, "Hello" will make you cry. He was HUGE in the 80s, which is a lot, because so many bands and artists were great, just only one hit wonders, though or every song kinda sounded the same.

Lionel is an Icon. In the late 70s and through the 80s, everything he touched was fire. There's a video on here, that's a clip of a music tribute to Lionel. It was like an award show, but it was just different artists paying tribute to him. In this particular clip, Kenny Rogers told a story about a time when he called Lionel to ask him to write a song for him. Lionel said "No". Then Kenny told him that it would be a bonus track on a Greatest Hits album he was working on, and would sell a minimum of 8 million copies. Lionel said "Is 7:00 tomorrow alright?" Hahaha. The story goes on from there. The song ended up being Lady, and became Kenny's biggest selling song in his career. Check it out on your own, not to react to. Just search for Kenny Rogers and Lionel Ritchie Lady. There's a couple different videos that you'll find. Do the one that's about 7 or 8 minutes. It's kinda funny.

You asked for song that were more straight R&B, but Lionel stood out because his music wasn't just R&B. He infused it with pop and disco, and even country. He was a huge artist in the 1980s. "Hello," "You Are," "Endless Love" (duet with Diana Ross), "Stuck on You," "Dancing on the Ceiling," "Say You, Say Me" and on and on. Music legend. I love that he's on American Idol now, sharing helping new artists with their careers.

This song was an IMMENSE hit in 1983 or so? I mean it was on the radio every hour, every station, until you couldn't escape it! Yes Twon the 80s was a great time to be young and alive, great unity in many ways. But yes his love songs were even better than this, try Truly or Endless Love, he has a huge list. He was at the top of the world for many years. You poor kids, but it's true, there is no comparison between the wealth of secular music and artists of the 70s and 80s especially compared to the misery you have today.
