I've heard much weirder music. It has a consistent song structure and the lyrics are coherent. It's not free jazz with free-association poetry, but it's subject matter was taboo at the time and still is today.

SUGARPLUM FAIRY came and hit the streets: Joe Campbell's nickname. He appeared in Andy Warhol's Nude Restaurant(1967) and very briefly in two others but is not seen in later projects. Got to commend you, Scrooby, on your information packed comment! Just to add to that for people who don't know, Lou Read preformed as part of the house band at the factory the velvet underground. The songs can be found on KZbin. My favourite is Hero!n. Although I've never done drugs, the tempo of the song helps you understand the highs and lows user's experience!

Lou Reed was the lead vocalist of the Velvet Underground in the '60s. The Runaways did a good cover of their song "Rock & Roll", both versions of which I'd recommend listening to.

Andy Warhol had his "Factory" in NYC. I believe many of the characters are based on people that hung out with Andy. Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop were buddies. I just couldn't believe that they got that phrase through the censors....!

Lou Reed has a huge catalogue. I would suggest Dirty Boulevard, Caroline Says II, Berlin, Satelite of Love, Vicious, Lisa Says and of course his biggest song Perfect Day for his solo work. He was also the lead singer, songwriter and composer of the Velvet Underground. Their best known songs are Sweet Jane, Rock n Roll, Pale Blue Eyes, Waiting For The Man, Femme Fatale, Heroin, Venus In Furs, New Age and Sunday Morning.

1973. I was 25 in FLA fresh in from UK and I can tell you first hand that song was full of love for everyone, We all got along and loved and accepted each other regardless. It was truly the beginning of a wonderful 2 to 3 decades. For some reason, "they"? didn't like that and started to divide us all again. Sadly it seems to have worked. Don't question the people, question the government. Love your reaction and wish you could have witnessed that time.
