There's an island off of the south Atlantic coast somewhere, where the closest accent to the posh royal accents of 200 years ago is the most closely preserved on the planet, more so even than in the UK. It sounds nothing at all like the "highbrow?" British accents of today, but you can pick up on the Britishness of it a little bit, too. That said, the American Southern accent is part British and part African. It's so interesting, as modern British accents are so different from the older British accent inherent in the Southern Drawl.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is part of the Southern Rock genre. The genre was made popular by Capricorn Records in Macon, GA in the 1970's. Capricorn was founded Otis Redding and Phil Walden. The 70's were a special time in the South, Jimmy Carter of Georgia was elected the first President of the US from the Deep South since the Civil War. You might want to check out the Allman Brothers, Wet Willie, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker. The Confederate battle flag was displayed to show pride as Southerners. Notice the lyrics, " In Birmingham the love the governor" and the background singers say "Boo, Boo, Boo" and the song continues, "We all did what we could do. The Governor at the time was a white supremacist, George Wallace. They were throwing shade at him...making it clear that they did not support him or the racism.
@Kim-dm4yb Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Most people don't catch that...they were against racism and spoke out about it. I will be honest, I still don't understand why anyone today would ever display the Confederate flag, I'm against it. It basically represents racism and they were in the losing side of the civil war. I think some are just ignorant of the facts about history.

@Kim-dm4yb Does the Holy Bible represent racism? The KKK and other hate groups read from the Bible. They also display American Flags....is it racist? I think the Dred-Scott decision was written by the Supreme Court (US Supreme Court not the Confederate Supreme Court). My point is...its no more racist than anything else. If you cut holes in white bed sheets and go trick or treating as a ghost......that's not racist to trick or treat as a ghost. You put the same bed sheets on and ride around in the back of a pickup truck burning crosses and that's racist. Now....does the bedclothes make you racist or the actions behind it? I happen to feel its actions. My point is...if the flag stands for "the South" its not racist. If it stands for lynching and slavery to you....then its racist to you. It it what the user uses it for. I don't display one, but it doesn't bother me if others do.

Im from a small Alabama town, very country. It isn't unusual to see black folks flying the confederate flag, my neighbor being one. He is perhaps about 80 years old and he loves Lynard Skynard. He sees the flag as Southern Pride. After all, his ancestors literally built our town. He loves telling about that. The old churches have survived, built in the 1840's. Breathtaking to this day. Now I can't speak for other southern towns, but we are all family here and nobody batts an eye over the flag. Love all the videos !!!

Me too. In my small town in Alabama, Race does NOT defy having southern pride. The Confederate Flag is flown by all races just as a symbol of a person's southern pride. Kid Rock is from Detroit and Skynyrd are from Jacksonville, Florida (most of them), the guy who wrote the Riff (Ed King) was a California hippie. The verses of the song all address different things but the title and the verse about The ‘swampers’ are a tribute to the ‘Fame’ recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and the great studio musicians that were there at the time. The part about the Governor is about George Wallace who was a segregationist governor who was shot and paralyzed while running for President. They were not at all supporters of Wallace - after his name they say “boo, boo, boo!” and they say “We all did what we could do”, but what they didn’t like was people from outside the South painting all Southerners in the same light and I’m all honesty they started flying the flag because in Europe they were being called ‘Yanks’ and that was too close to yankee, which as southern guys who grew up in a cycle of poverty and mistrusted the North - that was an insult to them so they fire the flag to differentiate themselves - “We’re not Yankees, we’re from the South”. As for the line about Neil Young, he wrote a song called Southern Man’ that essentially painted all white southerners as racist and he was Canadian so that pissed then off. They later toured together btw. They have a song called “Don’t Ask Me No Questions” which talks about getting grief for embracing black culture - “Do you love the brothers”, so these guys were definitely not racist, for some their music may at the time have been a little too black. Hope that offers some context, love watching such smart and genuine young men.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was and still is a great band and good people. Like other music, though probably isn't for everyone everyone has different taste, but as far as southern rock goes, Lynyrd Skynyrd is at the top of my list. Also, there's a story behind Ronnie, Van Zandt, and the plane crash where he was killed. Maybe 1978 I'm not positive.

56 here also and Originally from Florida. Steve and Cassie Gaines were brother and sister. The band needed a guitarist to replace Ed King when he left and His older sister Cassie Gaines had previously joined a gospel-oriented vocal trio called the Honkettes, who were hired by the Lynyrd Skynyrd band to sing backup and add more color to their stage show. When Cassie learned that the group was on the lookout for a guitarist to replace departed member Ed King, she spoke to guitarist Allen Collins and got her brother a chance to play with the group at a show, but only for one song. The guys in the band weren't expecting much from the singer's brother and even had things set up so his amplifier could be pulled if he couldn't keep up -- but Gaines could keep up with the best rocking guitar. In less than a month, Steve was a member of Skynyrd.. They were from Miami, Oklahoma. There isn't much about LS I don't know, they are one of my all-time favorite bands ever, I grew up listening to them and the Allman Brothers Band. My late husband (as of just 4 months ago) had he Original cover album from "Street Survivors", which is of course not the cover that you see today, Teresa Gaines asked that the cover be replaced since the album was released the same day of the plane crash on Oct 20, 1977 and a few got out before the change could take place and that is why there are 2 different "Street Survivors" album covers out there. Sorry for the rant, just wanted to try and help others that didn't know anything of this to understand a little about the band. Take care everyone, Peace out😊🎼🎵🎶🎤🎸🎹

Their music is so rich and full because they have Four Harmonizing guitars. You never know which one is playing a lead riff the others are adding their sound to the song. Muscle Shoals is a small place on the river, it has a recording studio there and those recording there influenced their music.

The sweetest part of Alabama is in LA -lower Alabama. Best part of Alabama filled with beautiful, life lovin’ people. Once they get to know you and 🎉accept you, you’ll be back to see them often and have wonderful memories of your time with them. That’s the way they are. Deep down, they don’t care what you think of them but they care about you nonetheless. Go there, meet them, get to know them, and I guarantee you’ll find some salt of the earth people who just want to enjoy life as much as possible because they know it’s unpredictable and they’ll be happy to take you along.

White Southern musicians are probably the least racist folks you'll ever meet. We know where our musical roots come from. The Skynyrd boys really didn't push for the flag to be used, that came from their, mostly Jewish, record company exec's. I get called regularly to come play in predominantly Black Churches. My regular Church gig is with a small independent Baptist Church with an integrated congregation. If you haven't listened to The Ballad of Curtis Lowe yet, you really should. It tells the story of a poor Black guitarist that had a major influence on Skynyrd's music. Peace!

@ExperienceEric2 жыл бұрын
@Maria Fox That's what happens when you judge the past by your modern biases. It was not really seen as a racist symbol nearly as much in those days, it was simply a southern heritage symbol which was not just white. It was about family, fishing, summer cookouts, family gatherings and old school values of family and friends. Stop being so judgmental of others.

@@numberoneballer2075 There is nothing racist about Lynyrd Skynyrd at all, they are a perfect example of reverse racism and bigotry. Foolish young people see a flag that was on an album 50 years ago that was never intended as a racist symbol by the band and judge them as racist because of the modern woke culture. People behaving in the exact manner they point fingers at others for supposedly doing. Blatant hypocrisy. If your going to call out racism and bigotry, stop behaving in racist and bigoted manners. I’ve been to about 30 of the United States, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Africa (in cities not the wild), most every country that ends in -stan and let’s just say other places my favorites are New Zealand,Alabama,and the United Kingdom. Alabama jumps to number one solely because I grew up there and my family is still there. The Appalachian mountains start there. Has great beaches in the south. The Tennessee runs across the state(you can’t find a prettier river in the US. It’s quickly becoming the tech manufacturing capital of the US. Mission Control for the ISS(international space station) and builds everything from cars to rocket engines. So we got a lot going on. This song is near and dear to a ton of Alabamians. I was at a blues traveler concert at the university of Alabama for home coming. It’s was packed and people were loving it then one of the guitar guys played the start of sweet home Alabama then stopped and said “sorry we don’t actually know that song” boy could have been Moses seeing sea of people disperse so fast. No boo’s just quiet disappointment. To play around with this song unless you mean it.

Skynyrd and many southerners flew ol' glory as southern pride symbol and rebellion against typical northerner liberals idea of it being about the support of slavery. Shallow minds think shallow thoughts. The lyrics explain their anti-racism views, they "boo hoo hoo" the racist governor Wallace of the 60s. "We did what we could do". Non-racists denounced him. Southern rock owes everything to the black music and musicians, that's why and how they learned to play music.
