This song was not only a love for the south it also gave a finger to the racists at the time in Birmingham. As well as Neil Young for calling all southern people racists. It was a very powerful hidden message from the band who stood against segregation and racists.

Best southern rock song EVER recorded IMO. Lynyrd Skynyrd just embodied the heart and soul of the south and the music that it produced. They were all superb musicians, and even more importantly, they were so tight. Man , we all missed out on some awesome music after that airplane went down. Here’s a little hidden secret I don’t think too many people know about this song. If you listen very closely when Ronnie sings….”I heard Neil Young sing about her”, in your left speaker you will hear the producer, Al Cooper, sing the words “Southern Man” in a Neil Young like voice. I just found that out recently after listening to this song for over 40 years and never noticing!

Skynyrd was from Florida. They recorded for the first time in Muscle Shoals with "The Swampers". There are wonderful documentaries on The Swampers, they were amazing musicians who recorded an amazing amount of artists. Basically what happened was that after recording Skynyrd, the band tried shopping their demos to record companies. The tapes sounded terrible and Ronnie Van Zant was convinced the Swampers sabotaged their recordings. It turned out that the tape somehow got twisted so the wrong side was playing. Ronnie felt terrible about thinking Jimmie Johnson "sabotaged" their tape so he wrote this song.

The Governor he references is George Wallace of Alabama. The Skynyrd boys were often confused for racists when in fact this song and the line about The Governor bears the truth of the matter. "In Birmingham they love the governor (Boo-Boo-Boo) Now we all did what we could do"

They started the Southern Rock genre w/probably some help from the Eagles & Linda Ronstadt in the 70's/80's. There were a ton of great bands in that music type - Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker, Blackfoot, .38 Special & so on.

Linda Ronstadt and a few skinny kids came to Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in 1971 along with an unknown BoB.seger. Maybe they were lured there because the Rolling Stones had slipped into the US and chose to come to tiny Sheffield Alabama instead of New York or california. Whatever, they all did ok I guess😁 the skinny kids would later become known as the Eagles. Funny things like that were always happening in Alabama. You really should watch the incredible movie, MUSCLE SHOALS. IZF YOU Haven't seen it, stop punishing yourself and watch it on KZbin or Spectacular Blu ray. It's well worth it! The Swampers were a group of session musicians in Muscle Shoals. They are credited for launching many careers. There is a PBS special on them. Very interesting bit of rock history.

The reason Ronnie Van Zant put the line "in Birmingham they love the governor....Boo,boo,boo".Is because George Wallace was the governor of Alabama at the time(He famously stood in the schoolhouse door at the University of Alabama to prevent integration)and it was Van Zant's way of saying they weren't racist and didn't agree with Wallace.

i was watching a Lynard Skynard documentry with the actual band members giving their memories of their journy. And they said that Ronnie Van Zant ( lead singer ) didnt write any of his lyrics down to any of his songs. He just made them up in his head when he heard the beat of the music. They had a little shack out by a little river that they practiced in. They said that as they were in the middle of a jam session Ronnie walked down to the river and started fishing. He he walked back up to the shack he had the song already written in his head and just jumped in singing to the music they were jaming to.

Another great video you guys! Lynyrd Skynyrd is the epitome of Southern rock! Asia you brought up the lines in the song about the Alabama governor and about Watergate. They are two different subjects. Alabama governor lines: In Birmingham they love the governor. Now we all did what we could do”. That’s a reference to the integration of Birmingham, Alabama public schools in 1963 and the governor at the time, George Wallace, who was opposed to it. Eventually the Federal government had to call in the National Guard to force it. I’m sure you’ve seen the famous photo of the black children walking in line between two lines of armed soldiers just to get to school. Then the song mentions Watergate and how it didn’t bother the writer. Watergate was a break in by people in Richard Nixon’s 1972 reelection committee of the Democratic national headquarters in Watergate Hotel. Nixon didn’t know about the crime when it happened. So he wasn’t directly involved, but when he found out he tried to cover it up. Compare that to what they get away with today. That’s why they end with asking you to examine your own conscience. What have you done in your life?

Billy was a Roadie for the band. Then one day in Muscle Shoals (Sheffield actually) Alabama one of the Swampers, Jimmy Johnson, overheard the Roadie playing concert piano! No one knew he could do that. After recovering from the shock, he was immediately welcomed into Lynyrd Skynyrd! The rest was history!

Neil Young and Ronnie Van-Zant were actually friends and had planned on writing together before the plane crash that killed Van-Zant along with guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and road manager Dean Kilpatrick, who had grown up with the guys. But Van-Zant and Young were friends and for those who don't believe that, look at the shirt Van-Zant is wearing on their final album cover, its a Neil Young shirt as a statement and there is tons of older photos of Neil Young wearing a Florida whiskey Skynyrd shirt as well. The whole Sweet home Alabama thing was never as serious to them as fans made it out to be. lol

Neil Young had a song called Southern Man where he painted the south as racist more or less . Skynyrd replies to him in the song with wording of a Southern Man dont need you around anyhow . Then the Governor reference is Governor George Wallace of Alabama who stood in a School house door in Birmingham to stop segregation .You will hear the lyrics say in Birmingham they love the Governor Boo-Boo-Boo .Then says we all did what we could do . Then throws watergate at the north as saying if everyone in the south is racist everyone in the north is ok with abuse of power stating does your conscious bother you about it? Basically you cant lump all Southerners together as racist . The song has deep meaning it sounds fun and upbeat but it cuts deep to the fact that people outside of the South view/ed the south as racist .Skynyrd wasnt even from Alabama but did record there for awhile and knew the area.And knew people were the same all over the south and up north worldwide even . Just people trying to survive and cant be lumped together as a whole from some bad choices other's make .At the end he says Montgomery's got the answer. Montgomery the capitol of Alabama . We dont have the answer to the problems but they do if they can see it.Again dont say the whole south is racist because of some others we can do only what we can do . They just didnt appreciate the Stereotype the south was portrayed as.Cause they knew they didnt think like they were accused of.

Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Gimme Three Steps", "Saturday Night Special" etc.

The writer was making a contrast between the president's role in the Watergate scandel while saying that the governor of Alabama was true to the people of the state. Being born in the state of Alabama in 1957, you two would not believe how many times I have heard this song since it was a hit in the early 1970's!

I saw them in 96 with Peter Frampton and 38 special in River Bend Cincinnati . They parted the waters of the Ohio River ! And saw them again in 2012 at Least Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville Kentucky . And they blew the roof off of that place . Mr. Huey Thomason from the Mighty Guitar Army Of The Outlaws was playing with them in 96 and people I had the privilege of seeing Billy Powell and Leon Wilkison in 96 and so Thankful I did because Both of them along with Huey Thomason had passed away. I got a little nugget for some of the people that's not real familiar with all of the bands that's come out of Florida . Listen I don't know what the Hell they giving them people down there but I'm going to get me some of whatever it is because.... Skynyrd....Molly Hatchet.. Outlaws.... Black Foot and I could keep on going and going . This state has really produced more bands than any other state I know of anywhere. And I love everyone of these bands especially The Original Black Foot ! Damn Ricky Medlock is one of the Baddest Guitarists in the world . And the Outlaws was damn Beyond mindbogging with all of there guitarist. I was watching a reaction video of Green Grass and High Tides a while back and at the end of it the one of the guys reacting to it said I wasn't nothing but a hyped up song that really didn't show him anything 😂 Wrong words ! Damn if I didn't speak for the Whole Damn United States and he was American to and of course I told him his new home would end up right in the middle of Hell talking like that and I be damned if that didn't offend the Hell out of him and he sent me a pretty nasty comment back but he just lost his Ass in that battle because I just come unhinged and really said to much but F### these Jerks that's going to go slinging shade on The Outlaws ! Everyone always thinks Skynyrd was feuding w/ Neil Young, of course they weren't. But here's a cool little factoid for Skynyrd fans...if you listen close, I mean put your ear up to the left speaker right after Ronnie sings "Well I heard Mr. Young sing about her", you can hear producer Al Kooper (a noted singer himself) anyway Al sings, in what he calls a Neil Young imitation, "Souther man, better use your head." It's so quiet it's almost subliminal but it's there on the original recording on the Second Helping album. Ronnie Van Zant says turn it up! Kooper sings the phrase "Southren Man" in the background of the verse mentioning Neil Young. It's hard to pick up, but it's there. Ronnie said, "Turn it up," to the guys in the booth meaning the volume he was hearing, and they liked it and left it in the song.

Muscle Shoals had the Swampers..they've been known to pick a song or two.. That is reference to Muscle Shoals studio..and the studio musicians..who played on many hits including early Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Ottis Redding, and Rolling Stones flew from England to record there. Duanne Allman was part of the studio Musicians.before. the Allman brothers formed. Muscle Shoals was the Motown of the South in mid sixitie early 70s.

Love this band. Have seen them in concert several times and always a great show. Neil Young made a song called Southern Man and that is what the band is referring to when they say A Southern Man don't need him around anyhow

George Wallace (8/25/19-9/13/98) was 45th governor of Alabama for 4 terms. A Democrat, he was a staunch segregationist and populist. Wallace ran for president as a Democrat 3 times, 1 time as an Independent, lost all 4. He opposed desegregation and supported Jim Crow during the Civil Rights Movement, declaring in his 1963 inaugural address that he stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever". hence the lyric "in Birmingham they love the guv'nor, BOO, BOO, BOO!!!"

The lead singer Ronnie Van Zant had two brothers that were in bands. Ronnie was the oldest. Donnie Van Zant was in the Band called 38 special. He was one of the founders of 38 special. The youngest brother Jonny Van Zant became the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987 when the band reformed. Both groups had some great songs.

The Eagle's song Seven Bridges Road is another good song about Alabama. 'Watergate does not bother me, does your conscious bother you'. At the time government and its problems felt far away and shouldn't be of concern to the southerner, what should be of concern is your conscience (your own wellbeing).

Hey y'all, Lynyrd Skynyrd named themselves after their highschool gym coach Lenard Skinner the Skinner family in Jacksonville Florida was a big dairy family anyways he did not like them cause at that time long hair was forbidden welp they named their band after them and the rest his southern rock history.. They all came from a part in Jacksonville Florida called Lakeshore in the late 70s they called it Shantytown and in the 80s we called it the Bottom and it lived up to both names.. Now in Sweet Home Alabama you hear Ronnie Van Zant give a shout out to the Swampers ( Muscle Shoals has the Swampers) the Swampers we're a house band at a recording studio who this house band back in the late 60s- 70s was in everybody's albums... Aretha Franklin went down to Alabama to record and she said she was blown away cause the Swampers we're all a bunch of white guys playing soul .... There is a documentary called MUSCLE SHOALS this was life changing for me as I am a huge fan of any genre of music... Jacksonville Kid by LYNYRD SKYNYRD is a really good one as Jacksonville Florida is where it all began for Lynyrd Skynyrd.... The Allman Brothers is a band you should look into as the Allman Brothers we're 1st and made a big push to help Lynyrd Skynyrd get where they got... Wilson Pickett and Duane Allman did Hey Jude by the Beatles and it is great... If you wonder how Wilson Pickett and Duane Allman got together watch that documentary Muscle Shoals and it will explain everything.... Much Love ..... Duvvvvval till I Die

Glad to hear you like the keys Asia. LS piano player is an interesting find. Billy Powell was a roadie for LS, setting up, moving equipment, but was a classically trained pianist-but didn't want anyone to know because he thought they would make fun of him, . One day the band went on break and Billy stayed behind and played "Free Bird" on the piano. Whhen the band returned and heard him play, they were amazed. It was immediately incorporated in the song and remains a memorable part of Free Bird, especially the beginning.

The berth place of southern Rock and many other amazing songs and sounds to come from that place . You have to watch the movie to fully understand. This is the song I sang the very first time I ever went to karaoke! I love the song and I love the movie by the same name. It's only been through watching KZbin reactors react to songs but I've learned the history behind Lynyrd Skynyrd. I've come to like them a lot more than I used to. One of my favorite songs by them is called "Simple Man." I think our parents should listen to this song with your children at some point. Awesome song!

I’m not a bama fan but I’ve been to a few games. If you ever go to a bama football game in T-town (tuscaloosa), whenever they play this, right after the “sweet home Alabama” part, the crowd chants “ROLL TIDE ROLL” right before the “where the skies are so Blue” part. I always thought it was pretty cool.

In the part about the Swampers it was the musicians at the muscle shoals sound studio where some of their albums were recorded. Check out the video about muscle shoals music industry the area has muscle shoals sound studio and fame studio. Good history lesson about music. There are multiple acts that recorded there. Aretha Franklin, percy sledge, rolling stones and several others.
