I believe Madness were the most successful UK band of the 80s ..... in all they had 15 Top Ten hits ..... and they came from my area of London !

@@paultaylor9498 Not many UK bands 'made it' in America. Look at The Jam, The Smiths. Tastes were different then. USA had Bruce Sprigstein and Mihael Jackson; we had Madness and 2Tone bands and Mod and New Romantic stuff going on. Even The Sex Pistols weren't well received in America. Some of the band that you mebtioned were prety naff, because they tried to cater for both, and the litmus paper is how those songs sound now.

I grew up in Portsmouth. Madness had a big connection there as well. Look at the amount of times that Madness played at Fratton Park.

@paultaylor9498 Dire Straits,Spandau,Queen,Sheen Easton,Olivia Newton John,The Smiths,The BeeGees etc But being successful doesn't mean being popular in the States.Cliff has sold more records than most.He only had one or two hits stateside.

Similar to one step, try Night Boat to Cairo. For a more mellow smooth vibe try One Better Day. Madness truly are chameleonic in their sounds.

An instrumental track that made the top 10 (as far as I remember) in the UK pop charts. They used to play this at the school disco. I was only 9 or 10 at the time. I was really into American Soul and Funk later on, but these early tracks we heard around us all the time made an empression.

Madness were great and had such a variety of songs. Embarrassment and Baggy Trousers sound light hearted (but have quite deep lyrics really), It Must be Love is a love song and Night boat to Cairo is more like this one.

There are so many songs of theirs that are completely different. Try "Sugar & Spice". Or, if you're courageous, "The Liberty of Norton Folgate".

Madness is a BLAST. They were also the house band on a wacky British show that was the first non-music video show on MTV in early 80s called The Young Ones. Brilliant snapshot of post-punk counter-culture in Britain.

This will give you a quick look into early ska and its influence in england in the 60's and the revival in yhe late '70s which is where madness, the specials, selecter etc fall in and the unfortunate rise of racist skinheads and how they tarnished the scene in the early 80's Also Don Letts was very influential in everything british sub culture from late 70s to even now, woryh looking into him if your interested very interesting man kzbin.info/www/bejne/f17Pqp6ea5J3mZo
