Madonna's catalogue is endless, this was a big hit im 2001! No one has done what she's done and in my opinion she doesn't get the props for it in this day and age. She's a great savy artist always written off since the very beginning of her stardom. It's a miracle she's alive and not died like her fellow big legend peers(miss them BIG time).

This is one Madonna song and video, i remember from my childhood. Was played excessively on the radio back then, big hit in 2001, if i remember corrently from her smash Music album. People started to wear Cowboy hats and imitated her look in the video back then.

Don't Tell Me is a grower... if you were to give it another 3 or 4 listens, you'd begin to understand what all the fuss is about, and why it's so beloved amongst M fans 🙂 Remember, it's the ones that take a little time to reveal themselves that have the greatest staying power (and I'm talking about ALL music, not just Madonna's catalogue). I bet if you were to think back to songs that you loved on the first listen, you'd find that they're the ones you tired of rather quickly. Am I right, or am I right? 😉

Absolutely spot on! Björk's stuff is very much like this too. Takes a while (and sometimew quite a few listens) for the truly great tracks to integrate. Probably because they aren't relying on the formulaic proven "instant gratification" responses like modern pop commercial songs have exploited over the years.
@lutalice
@lutalice Жыл бұрын
@@gozzywozzy485 exactly! I mean, it's probably not the case with Don't Tell Me specifically, but I'd say from experience that I've sometimes needed to allow my brain time to grow accustomed to more complex, less predictable compositional structures (Tori Amos especially; I'm a massive fan - heard her live cover of Frozen? It's just gorgeous ❤). I theorise that when listening to a new song, our brain automatically tries to predict where it's going (chord changes, etc), and we get thrown off when it goes somewhere unexpected. So it takes a few listens to get past that. And the more complex and less formulaic the structure, the more listens it takes to "absorb." With Don't Tell Me, I think it's the understated-ness that upon the first few listens doesn't grab you by the throat, but soon enough you realise that it's deceptively brilliant in its simplicity. That's my take anyway 🙂

Marissa! You kinda hurt my heart when you said you wouldn't listen to it again lol! Please do yourself a favor and give it a chance! Maybe check out Madonna's stripped down performance on David Letterman when she was just learning to play guitar. There's also a great duet she did with Miley Cyrus where they mashed this up with "Can't Stop". "Don't Tell Me" was originally written by Madonna's brother in law, a singer/songwriter called Joe Henry who works in an entirely different genre. His wife heard the demo and suggested he send it to Madonna, probably recognizing that the lyrics fit her sister's personality perfectly. Anyway, one of my all time Madonna favorites.

This was when Madonna really started experimenting with more artistic, obscure foreign producers and mixing genres not only sonically but visually like in this video. It's obviously not country music but the costuming and choreography work so well with this production somehow. She took huge creative risks considering she was such a huge pop fixture already and this sounded nothing like anything on pop radio at the time. Ray of Light in 1996, Music (the album this song is from) in 2000 and American Life in 2003 were here most experimental/creative albums and remain my favorite.

Glad you liked it. One of my total favorites. You guys nailed the experimental part and most of us who watched the video, before having the album, reacted to the "glitchy" part just as you did. You might need more than one listen to get the lyrics, but that's ok.

I remember this being released in 2001. It was massive hit in Ireland, and the music video, her look & the choreography played a big part in that. The instrumental is what drives the song too. At the time it was released many people had bought the CD (MP3’s didn’t exist), and they mistakenly tried to return them to the shops as they though the CD was skipping! Nothing like it had ever been produced. For me it’s one of her top 3 songs.

This was written by Grammy award winning musician Joe Henry on his new equipment, as a test track, just to see how it sounded. It was a tango style song called "Stop". Anyway, Henry's wife Melanie (Ciccone) sent it to her sister who loved the lyrics, but completely re-wrote the melody and, with "Music" producer Mirwais, re-imagined it as a country dance song with the "Sweet Home Alabama" stutter effect. Henry's version was featured in The Sopranos and later included on his album "Scar". I like them both but as Henry reportedly said, "I wrote a song, she turned it into a hit".

Stop was a song written by 3 time Grammy winning country artist Joe Henry. Joe Henry went to Rochester Adams High Schoo while there met and fell in love with a girl two years younger named Melanie Ciccone, whom he married in 87 and they have two kids. He was also friends with Melanie's eldest sister Madonna Ciccone who was two years ahead of Joe in high school. Melanie convinced him to play the song for Madonna and she then rewrote the song into Don't Tell Me which was their first collaboration and they've done a few more which are all really good

This song and video were so much better than Ghost Town. I love the Ghost Town song so much, but the video was subpar. I don't know. It just didn't hit me the right way. I don't hate it or anything. It's not coherent and it could be but in a good way. Don't Tell Me was a big hit and the video's concept was so original.The choreography was on point and original. Brava Madonna! Y'ALL NEED TO DO RAY OF LIGHT FROM THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW 1998. THE LIVE PERFORMANCE IS AMAZING. MADONNA HAD EVERYONE ON THEIR FEET DANCING. YOU CAN FEEL THE ENERGY. I THINK I LIKE IT BETTER THAN THE STUDIO RECORDING. MADONNA IS ALL STRIPPED BACK. NO BACK UP DANCERS AND HARDLY ANY SET PRODUCTION. JUST HER AND HER BAND PLUS THE INSANE AUDIENCE. SUCH A GREAT PERFORMANCE!

Older generations were surprised that she put out such a mature music and awesome production out. This album in a way marked my late teenage years and I remember I wanted to look like her in these videos. Still moves me to hear those hirs.
