Madonna is a legend. Highest grossing female artist of all time. Great music and provocative music videos always fighting for social and racial injustice. This was 1989 and has profound meaning today. Vogue, Express Yourself, La Isla Bonita, Papa Don’t Preach….many more to read to.

This is not crazy, it's artistic symbolic images, that was For Black Community during the 80's. You can't imagine how much this video clip promote black people in the US and over the Globe. And you 2... From all people say it's crazy. She made Jesus black. She was band from pepsi commercial and the Vatican said she's not catholic. But back then, she was standing for her opinion that Jesus can be black.💋

Back when this came out the content was so controversial. The Catholic Church ex-communicated her for implying sex in church, having a black Jesus, and burning crosses( symbol of the KKK) to represent social injustice. She spoke against racism and was punished for it. This was like 1989! She took alot of heat.

Keep watching this video. It came out in the 80s. It stands as the most powerful video on The tribe of Judah. As well as the persecution of the black race by the white catholic church. Hats off to Madonna for this one.

Please, please, please, more Madonna! Music videos AND live performances. Almost none of her songs sound alike, with each album she experiments with different sounds and styles. She's well-known for being "controversial," but that's just because she's always been ahead of her time. This song/video came out at a time when portraying interracial relationships was taboo, speaking up for LGBTQ and other minority groups could have sunk her career, and proudly and boldly expressing female sexuality was seen as pornographic and off limits, even though male performers did it on a regular basis. She's always been about equality. She changed the game, just as Michael Jackson did, although they did in very different ways. They were/are considered the Queen and King of Pop for a reason! 💙

Thank you so so much for this reaction. I was a student in Brooklyn, New York when this video came out, and it was considered really controversial by the, you know, haters. "How could they portray Jesus as being black?" etc etc. And the message of the video is so beautiful because she dreams of a pure spiritual experience. And her message about racial and sentencing justice is so beautiful then, but also to this very day. The struggle for truth and equality is far from done.

Get ready for a voyage into Madonna's world. She is one of the most diverse entertainers that knows how to break down boundaries. She single handed changed the world of music. She opened the door for female to explore their sexuality without feeling bad nor having to ask permission. In 1990 her blonde ambition tour set the boundaries high for other performers. She introduced the whole scene for concerts by bringing theatrical, bringing videos live on stage. Her 1st MTV awards performance is still iconic. Check it out. 1984 Like a Virgin On the mtv awards.

This was the first Black Lives Matter video. I was a white European exchange student in an African American religious family at the time this video came out. This video was censored (the original was more explicit) and Pepsi dropped a commercial deal with Madonna because of the inter-racial kissing and anti-KKK message of this video. And my African-American host family called me a devil worshiper (there are more explicit religious imagery in the original) because I liked Madonna. Madonna has always thought it is her moral duty to defend the outcasts. She's gone too far at some points, but her message has always been consistent. By the way, a very intelligent interpretation of the video. Not many understand it.

Contrary to the ‘Black Jesus’ interpretation in the video by some over the years since it first came out in 1989, the life-size religious figure/statue (portrayed in the video by the same Black actor who also played the role of the wrongly-accused man) inside the church is the image of Martin de Porres-a 16th century mulatto (Hispanic Black) Peruvian Catholic friar who is venerated in the Catholic and other Christian churches as the patron saint of social justice, racial harmony, of mixed-race and working poor people-causes that he devoted his life to. Most Catholic Churches are named after saints like St Martin de Porres, where the faithful venerate the icon/image by kissing it usually by the feet as a gesture of humility. Madonna as a child had a strict Catholic upbringing, and as she matured she would express her inner conflict (love/hate) with her Catholic faith, and reflect it in her music throughput her iconic career. Appreciate you covering and reacting to this Madonna masterpiece.

Madonna did a lot to promote equality. She came to NYC as a young woman dead broke. She was accepted by poor communities she was one of them. This included minorities and gays. She never forgot even after she got rich and famous she still always defended marginalized people. She was poor and abused growing up. and motherless. Tough life. Made her tough.
