I believe that people have very strong reactions to Madonna because she has a very strong point of view and doesn’t compromise on her vision and that can be very polarizing. She is an entertainment Icon. Her music, her videos, her style, her politics all come together on so many songs. Holiday (the beginning) Like a Virgin ( the early scandals), Like a prayer (the Catholic Church and Pepsi controversy) Vogue ( began her gay rights push) any song from Erotica in particular Justify My Love (sexual exploration) and on and on..

I've said this so many times and I'll say it again. Madonna is underrated as famous as she is. Ppl that don't like her, just don't like her as a person and don't like her image, she pushed boundaries and that was just too much for some ppl, those ppl only focus on her image and don't even give her music a chance. She is a musical genius, she knows how to reinvent herself, she doesn't care what others think either. No one will ever top the achievements she has done as a solo artist.

I agree - she has a huge catalogue, and of a wide variety of genres. I cannot think of any other artists dead or alive who have had such a diverse styles of musical output. As for the ridicule - I agree but disagree too - it's not only "these days" - she has always been criticised by her many detractors and critics for what she has had to say - from day one of her career. Again, I cannot think of any other artists, dead or alive, who have had so much hate thrown at them - based on the artistic output and personal social justice stance and opinions of the artists. And yet she is still around, and thriving. Amazing person. Inspirational .

Dean Ismail ALL GREAT!! So glad to see a lot of her newer music on that list
@yasminm71574 жыл бұрын
Dean Ismail Some great points there, Dean. I was never a fan of her always trying to shock and be controversial, it always made me cringe and made her look desperate. HOWEVER, I think she’s had a lot of unfair criticism thrown at her because she’s a woman. Take David Bowie for instance (my absolute favourite artist of all time). He was the king of reinvention and innovation, more so than anyone else that ever followed, but he is somewhat untouchable and seems to be above criticism. Had he been a woman, he would’ve met with so much more criticism and derision. In that respect, I do admire Madonna for achieving what she has despite all that and am sure part of the reason behind the shock value was her sticking up two fingers to the critics and saying: well sod you, I’m going to do it anyway and better than anyone else, and be hugely successful along the way! Gotta love a trier.

Anyone who is intelligent enough can easily appreciate Madonna's latest album Madame X (2019). Provided you have the INTELLIGENCE. Never listen to other people, there are so many Madonna haters in the world, just because she is a woman with her own rules and controversies. Madonna always did what she had to do and still does. Madonna is more than a singer, listen to the lyrics and see the visuals. Did you get the point of the video? It's so relevant these days with the black lives matter movement. She did that over 30 years ago, but she never scared away from political statements, even when her career could be in danger. Love her or hate her, Madonna was an icon in the 80's. Her influence over fashion as well as music was immense. She was constantly pushing social boundaries. Her performance at the 1984 MTV VMA's of "Like a Virgin" was legendary. It would be tame by today's standards, but at the time, no one had ever seen anything like it on mainstream TV. She has an entire catalogue of songs worth checking out including, Like a Virgin, Lucky Star, Vogue, Papa Don't Preach, Into the Groove, Express Yourself, Borderline, Open Your Heart, Dress you up.

Good on you for having a look despite what some were saying. Madonna was MASSIVELY popular and iconic. She didn't play by the rules and some people didn't/don't like that. She probably has 15 tracks that one could consider a hit. Even if someone doesn't like her music her influence and success is undeniable. Absurdly, this video was controversial at the time. Madonna definitely carved the way for so many artists. She's always been hated on, this isn't new, but I will say I have noticed over the years the hate has come to include sexist age bigotry, people thinking somehow once you reach a certain age, especially for women, that you just need to go away. Unsure why people feel that way other than society is sexist af. But she's definitely always had her haters. For whatever they say about her, she has done some incredible things and opened doors for people and she is talented.

Its refreshing to hear a positive critique about Madonna. So often now she is consistently criticised for working/evolving etc irrespective of her music...listening to this song now, it's still, 31 years later a masterpiece, visually too.

With Madonna its not just about the song, listen to her lyrics and pay attention to the video and you'll not just hear her message but you'll see it too. So powerful!!!

Too many people have tried to tear down Madonna on many levels...she has persevered through ALL OF IT. She has written or co-written every song she’s recorded and has NEVER sold the rights to her music to anyone or any recording company. Not to mention she started her own recording company. She is the most successful female artist of all time. This recently happened however...“Drake has broken the record for the most top 10 singles in the history of the US Billboard chart, overtaking previous record-holder Madonna. The Canadian rapper and singer scored his 39th and 40th top 10 hits on this week’s countdown, as the vocalist on DJ Khaled’s singles Popstar and Greece . The feat comes just 11 years after his first appearance in the top 10, with his breakthrough hit, Best I Ever Had. Madonna had held the record since 2008, after surpassing The Beatles’ tally. The British band clocked up 34 top 10 hits between 1962’s Love Me Do and 1995’s Free As A Bird - which featured recovered vocals from the late John Lennon. Madonna tied the Beatles’ record with Don’t Tell Me, her 34th top 10, in February 2001; and overtook them with the Bond theme Die Another Day the following year. Her most recent appearance in the upper echelons of the US chart came in 2012, with Give Me All Your Luvin, which she performed at the Super Bowl half-time concert. The star still holds the record for the most top 10 singles as a lead artist. She’s credited as the main performer on all 38 of her appearances in the top 10. Drake, however, can only claim the lead role on 25 of his entries, appearing as a featured vocalist on the other 15.”

I really wanted you to react to some Madonna. Glad you did! I’ve been a fan of hers since I was 12...1984! LOL! I liked her because she was so controversial and didn’t care what people thought of her. She has plenty of great songs to react to. Her music videos and live performances were great.

This is one of the most iconic moments of the legendary career that Madonna has, she was bigger than Michael at time (1989 - 1991) SHE DOMINATES EVERYTHING.

What a great song to be introduced to Madonna with! Glad you gave her a listen. At the time, just about everything Madonna did broke through some barrier, was new and innovative and pushed a lot of buttons. Her look, her sound challenged norms in terms of sexual expression and repression. Just about everything she did shocked people. Some people thought she was a horrible role model for young girls, others thought she was a maverick for personal empowerment. Her music is phenomenal, her voice incredible, her live shows electric and her business savvy is substantial. And yes, she's known to also be quite flaky at times. People seem to either love her or hate her. I've been guilty of both. I've hated some of her gimmicks, but her music is some of the best. I'm one of the ones who's been requesting her - thanks for giving her a listen! Would love to hear more! :)

You’re so right - you never know until you check something out for yourself! I’m glad you gave her a chance. She’s a megastar for a reason! Personally I kinda lost track of her after the 80s because I basically stopped following (most) current music for a long time, but I really loved a lot of her 80s stuff, and I liked the few hits I did hear after that. Her first hits were Holiday and Lucky Star in 1983, and both are great songs! It would be fun for you to explore her career in chronological order. She has covered a LOT of ground! The “‘Material Girl” video from 1985 is an iconic homage to Marilyn Monroe. (Btw she has always been an outspoken LGBTQ ally, which is one reason some people hate her.)
