Nah, Hammer was an outlier. He was overtly poppy at a time when that led people to question his legitimacy as a rapper. Now that hip-hop is much more pervasive in culture, it's evident there was room even then for all different approaches to rap, including his, but he was definitely a bit controversial among the hardcore hip-hop fans in the day.

The controversy was Rick James accused Hammer of stealing his song and sued him. From my knowledge, the case was settled out-of-court and Rick was given songwriting credit. IMO, it was a sample which was standard in Hip Hop and actually gave original artists some recognition and popularity.

True story, back in the early 90s when I was still a college sophomore, I went to a record store to buy some records and I heard this girl who kept arguing with the saleslady about a song she wanted to buy. She kept insisting the song title was Compact Disc and the sales lady kept telling her there was no such song. When the saleslady finally asked her to sing a few bars of the song so she could find out which song the girl was talking about, the girl hummed the chorus riff "tan tan tan tan, tan tan, tan tan" and then yelled "Compact Disc!" instead of "U can't touch this". I nearly choked from trying to keep myself from bursting into laughter and ended up coughing up a lung.

PARACHUTE PANTS! EVERYBODY HAD A PAIR BACK IN THE 80,s AND, 90,s..🎉
@Sl0thL0veChunk Жыл бұрын
This was one of those songs that just broke through all barriers and was loved by EVERYBODY. I'm not even sure what I would compare it to. The same kind of power as something like Gagnam Style where it just blew up and got played by everybody at every party, every event, but whereas that song was more like a temporary meme, this song just stayed hot and never quit. This song got so hot that they even gave MC Hammer his own saturday morning cartoon show for kids (it didn't last long so nobody remembers, but that happened!). Those pants were Hammer's signature style, like Kris Kross's backwards pants or MJ's white glove. That was just his thing, but you know there were people wearing that! Just like people did the MJ white glove and everything! Some people definitely did that. I just remember everyone calling them "hammer pants" or "parachute pants". They added some extra flourish to his dancing.
@RahimJalloh-r9c2 ай бұрын
While Hammer was immensely popular at the time his fame and relevance had a significant decline by the end of 1991. By '92, rappers like Kriss Kross and Sir Mixalot were topping the charts, and at that point, Hammer was seen as lame, and "U Can't Touch This" became nothing more than a distant memory.

I was a teenager when this came, and we always called them Parachute Pants. ;)
@jhoang8614 жыл бұрын
sorry but Parachute pants were 80s and they were fitted nylon with several zipper pockets. MC Hammer wore harem pants or aka Hammer pants. Us breakdancers wore parachute pants in the 80s so the nylon would protect our skin when we touch the ground.

These are not parachute pants.

No bro. Sorry, parachute pants were something completely different.

@@bahice Yeah. Harem pants for men. I remember at some point they became popular with guys who went to the gym. I just looked at some pictures. I don’t think I ever owned any, but the looser ones look really comfortable.

Looks like it's been awhile since somebody commented on this video, let me tell you when I used to hit the night clubs back in the 80's & 90's in my younger buffed days, were I come from on the east coast those pants were called "parachute pants" I never wore them but you would see guys wearing them,were never my cup of tea but people enjoyed them back in the day as you younger guys would say good job on the video's keep up the good work.

This is one of the most high energy dance songs in the world, with the catchiest hook. It's a one-of-a-kind classic. And I never saw those pants on the street, but they looked great with that fast, fast dancing.

I am a seamstress and my daughter talked me into making her some M.C.Hammer pants. they were not easy to make, they took a lot of fabric and it required a lot of puckering around the waist line . She wore them proudly. Today when we bring it up, she tells me that she cannot believe she had the nerve to wear them in high school.
