He usually did a guitar solo live. I was working at a record store when this was popular. Usually, I got tired of the "hits" we played all the time. Not this one. It was always fresh on the ears. Rick came to our store for an LP signing event. I brought him a soda, and he told me to stay right there by him, because I smelled too good not to have nearby all the time. So there I stayed until he left. He did ask me to come by the show, told his manager to arrange the backstage pass. I laughed and told him, I'd love to see your show, but I'm the kind of girl you take home to mother. He literally doubled over laughing at that comeback, and said, "Okay, you get two tickets, up front. Enjoy the show!" I did. That band was something to behold in 1981. When Prince came to the store, he was sort of...shy and aloof, but Rick was all eyes and in the moment, very warm and engaging with all the people who stood in line to see him. Prince may have had more range with his talent, but I can assure everyone that Rick was lots more fun to be around.

In 1965 Rick James was lead singer in a band in Toronto with Neil Young called the Mynah Birds. The Mynah Birds also had bassist Bruce Palmer. Rick however was secretly a Vietnam War draft dodger from Detroit. Rick finally turned himself in to authorities and the band broke up. Young and Palmer then drove Neil's hearse (Neil named his hearse Clancy) to LA and famously reunited with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay in a traffic jam on Sunset Boulevard, thus forming the Buffalo Springfield. Additionally Neil's hearse can be found in the Springfield's 1966 song Nowaday's Clancy Can't Even Sing, and from The Stills/Young Band in 1976 the song Long May You Run. Both of these Young songs are worth a listen with lyrics if possible.
