Saw Mean Mary live in Asheville NC earlier this year. She is incredible live in concert. Her voice is polished, strong and commanding. She is definitely authentic and unique. Radio is missing an opportunity by restricting her music to blue grass channels. Mean Mary can definitely play the instruments and sing while making everyone in the audience wanting more when it's over. She is the real deal.

Welcome to the magical world of Mean Mary. She's an ace banjoist and plays mean guitar and fiddle breakdowns too, from stripped down solos and duets to full productions - and that voice!. She has quite a body of work on YT and she's so darn good it simply doesn't matter what you choose - she will leave you in awe. Congratulations on being the first reactor to zero in on her. It's about time someone did. Your comments and lyric analysis are very perceptive and I'm impressed by your obvious enthusiasm. Another great folk artist working in a similar idiom, mixing traditional and progressive with ease, is Rhiannon Giddens. Everything I said about Mary is true of her too. Be the first to react, you won't regret it (and nor will we, lovely lady). Btw, I believe Mary's remarkable lyrics are a collaboration with a talented close friend or relative whose name escapes me.

Mean Mary is a Goddess. I've seen her three times, and not only does she have "the gift"( in spades), she's the sweetest lady God ever created. Totally belies her chosen moniker "Mean, " because she's anything BUT mean. You've GOT to check out "Iron Horse." When she kicks that banjo into hyperspeed, you'll swear that the film is being run fast, but no, she actually plays that fast. She has the fastest fingers ever to Grace a human being, in my opinion. And never misses a note! As you can tell by the video, she ALWAYS performs barefoot. It's a necessity, because she has a special "beat pedal" gizmo that adds rhythm to her songs, but being barefoot also adds an "Earth Goddess" honesty to her magical, magnificent music. Those of you in the Chicago area, she'll be performing in Geneva, IL (Western suburbs) on Labor Day. Come and be enthralled. She travels with her mom, who co-writes many of her songs, and she is oh-so-friendly and interactive with her fans. You can buy her CD's, Mean Mary gear (pins, car window stickers, t-shirts, etc.), as well as the several books she's written. Can you tell I'm a fan? LOL

In my opinion, Mary is the most talented singer/songwriter/musician in the world today. She also is a writer (she and her mom write mystery novels), and she is a super nice person. We've corresponded a little - I gave one of her novels a positive review a couple years ago on Amazon, and she saw it and emailed me personally to thank me. Super fantastic lady!! ❤

I first met Mary at a Civil war reenactment where she and her brother Frank were playing and singing civil war tunes. It was 1992 and she was thirteen years old. She was fabulous to say the least and beautiful in her blue southern gown. If you think "old Banjo" was good you should listen to "Sweet Jezebel" or "I face somewhere" (Mean Mary and the Contraries). Her catalog is extensive and not a sour apple in all of it. Her rendition of Amazing Grace is fantastic. I can't say enough about her. I haven't seen her in person since 1992 but maybe I'll see her again someday. She lives about 30 mile from me so maybe I see her on the street.

I stumbled onto Mean Mary some years ago, and thought her a good banjo player, but thought nothing more of it, as the song I heard (I don't remember which it was) was country, a genre I'm not usually into. For some reason, her name popped into my head yesterday, and I searched KZbin for it. Found a wealth of great, original music! While she sings most of this song at the higher part of her register, I think her natural place is a more alto sound. What is most surprising about her (aside from the fact that she plays several instruments well, from banjo to violin), is that she isn't bound to a genre. She also writes story songs, which I love. In a way, as a songwriter, there's some kinship she has with how Tom Waits writes his songs. Tom also writes stories, and characters. And she is, like Tom, a very good lyricist. From something completely different from her, which I think you would love, I recommend "A Friend I Never Had" - I know the message will resonate with you, when even I - usually turned off by religious messaging - found the sentiment beautiful.
