You're right.The vocals are hard to understand at first, so we usually read the lyrics on first listen. For example, this song is about a war battle.There are 4 people in Metallica; they write and play, all their music. There's drummer, a bass player, a lead guitarist, and a vocalist/rhythm guitar.

I would recommend that you watch the band live. Not being familiar with this style of music you may be amazed at what you see happening. As far as the lyrics, the cadence is different than what you may be used to in other genres...its something you get used to as you listen more.
