Artist: Metallica
Album: ...And Justice for All
Released: 1988
Nominations: MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video
Genres: Progressive metal, Metal, Rock, Thrash
"One" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica.[1] It was released as the third and final single from their fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988). Written by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, "One" is an anti-war song that portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded  -  arms and legs blown off by a landmine, blind and unable to speak or move  -  begging God to take his life as he feels constant pain. His only hope is to devise a way to communicate with the hospital staff. In the music video, he jolts in the hospital bed, spelling "Kill me" in Morse code.[2] Production of the song was done by the band alongside Flemming Rasmussen. The song was the band's first top 40 hit single in the U.S., reaching number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also a number one hit in Finland

The soldier lost all ability to communicate. He can't hear what is being said, he can't talking, he can't move so he is left with nothing but his own thoughts. He manages to find a way to communicate through morse code by nodding his head. He hopes someone sees and understands what he's saying as he can't see or hear to know if they got the message so all he can do is just repeat over and over the messages "help" and "kill me". The song is especially brutal to imagine being in his situation and not being able to communicate or interact with the world.

@@Jerkturtle It wasn't that the licensing fees were so high, it's that the video took off so incredibly that *keeping track* was becoming difficult. It was easier for accounting purposes to just go ahead and buy it outright instead of tracking the hundreds/thousands of plays the video was getting on MTV, VH1, and late night broadcast shows, each one creating a line in the books to be tracked and paid...

“Landline, has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing, taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul...”The reason for the slow start and then the build up to fast and furious, is because the music is trying to mimic the wounded soldiers feelings. Starts with sadness, confusion, quiet and ultimately turns into furious fucking anger and fear. The very fast drum beats, listening closely, is supposed to mimic machine gun fire. This soldier is in hell and nobody will help him. So sad, but like the song, ends in fury and anger. Great channel guys. Thanks so much for doing this video. I envy anyone that gets to listen to Metallica for the first time. 🙂🙏🏼❤️🥳🤘🏼

It took years before I could listen to this song again, still can’t watch the video. A coma or coma like state was one of my Grandma’s worst fears. “You don’t get any rest, everyone is talking around you and you hear it all and you can’t respond....” She’d been an EMT/ambulance driver, and I have the plaque that was awarded to her for being our state’s top EMT trainer for three years in a row. When her tumor was removed for the second time, the doctor said it was the exact same tumor, not a new one, and it was very aggressive. I knew he was saying it would be back, but I never imagined that just eight months later it wouldn’t JUST be back, but already spread to her liver, lungs, abdomen, kidneys and had wrapped itself around the main artery leading to her right leg. Her last 2 1/2 weeks she couldn’t talk or walk or eat. And when people came to see her in home hospice, I’d have to remind them that she could still hear everything. Sometimes they argued and I’d see her toes curl...the only thing she could do to indicate she was upset. We lost her in October 2011. The first time I heard this song after she was gone, it was like a sucker punch! It hit me how Grandma was in a situation that was so similar to the guy in the song and I started bawling. Up until a year or two ago, every time this song came on it took me right back to those last three weeks.

The whole premise... for the song, which was written before the band discovered the book and movie that inspired the song as a second hand idea... the premise is that the young man has been injured so badly that all his limbs, his face, and part of his brain are missing. This is all centered around WWI... they didn't even have antibiotics, they barely had anything capable of disinfection without killing tissue. It's a miracle he is alive... but it's also a curse, a damnable sin because he is without ALL sensation except pain, and some feeling in his skin (the book talks about feeling the sun through a window). None of the doctors thought he would be conscious at all... but he was. Fully. But he was so isolated from the world that it took time to even figure out he was in a hospital. He was trapped inside his own mind... One, alone in the universe. And, eventually, forgotten and gone insane. Definitely gets my vote for 'Most frightening concept ever put into a song'. Video's their first, 1989 if I remember right. It literally exploded all over MTV...

One of the most difficult songs to listen to if you get it and I'm so glad that you get it. My brother's best friend, Dre Williams, died in Iraq in 2006. He had only seen his daughter Aaliyah one time, for one single day. I watch videos he sent from Iraq at least once a year to remind myself of the reality that is war. This song is a tough one. Another tough one is Master of Puppets (it's about drug addiction). I've been subscribed to y'all for a long time so I can't recall if you've reacted to that one or not. I just love the genuine appreciation and insight you have toward every song and performance you react to. And I can't believe Steph is 50. She looks like a video vixen and I live for you Steph, you're beautiful, smart, funny and kind.

600th comment! The doughboy's only form of communication with the outside world was Morse code. The nodding of his head was code for "Kill me. kill me. Kill me." You both had the most accurate first reaction to this song I have seen. Thanks to the shout out to the veterans. You both are a class act, even with your tip on. Thanks for your thoughts on the song, and keep making these videos!

The realest part of the video is when the general asks the priest if he has anything to say and the priest tells him; “he’s a product of your profession, not mine.” That’s tough

This song came out in '88. Enter Sandman came out in '91. Metallica is still going strong. They released a record a few years ago. I'd react to moth into flame, spit out the bone, and halo on fire.

Another Marine Corps Veteran, thank you for the shoutout and for the VA info. Having a messed up back I watch too many reaction videos and you two actually put thought into your videos. This song is based on a WW1 book or movie entitled “Johnny got a gun”. May I suggest two “five finger death punch” videos ( “gone away” and “wrong side of heaven”) I would love to hear your take. Also if you want to break the mold you might want to react to my units video from Afghanistan. (2/2 Easy Company Afghanistan) it’s not brutal but shows what we went through back in ‘08-‘09. Again thank you for taking the time. SF
