For Whom the Bell Tolls" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was first released on the group's second album, Ride the Lightning (1984). Elektra Records also released it as a promotional single, with both edited and full-length versions. The song is generally regarded as one of Metallica's most popular; by March 2018, it ranked number five on the band's live performance count.
Recorded
February 20 - March 14, 1984
Studio
Sweet Silence (Copenhagen, Denmark)
Genre-Heavy meta
Length
5:10 (album version)
3:59 (promo edit)
Label-Elektra
Songwriter(s)
Cliff Burton James Hetfield Lars Ulrich
Producer(s)-Metallica Flemming Rasmussen
The song was inspired by Ernest Hemingway's 1940 novel of the same name about the process of death in modern warfare and the bloody Spanish Civil War. Specific allusions are made to the scene described in Chapter 27 of the book, in which five soldiers are obliterated during an airstrike after taking a defensive position on a hill.

“Disposable heroes” by Metallica is in the same vein as For whom the bell tolls. How war uses up our young men.

Story here- I’ve been a huge Metallica fan since the mid 80s- prior to this song even being released originally but my greatest memory for it is when I took my boys to see zombieland when it came out. My youngest was about 8 and this song was the intro song for the movie. He starts screaming in a quiet theater “mommy mommy they’re playing Metallica!” Yep raised them boys right! Then I was blessed to take them to their first concert- yep Metallica in 2018 where I was hailed as the greatest mom ever! Doesn’t get any better than that!

I first heard this on a late night metal radio show out of Montreal at my grandparents house in rural Vermont in 1984 when I was 13. Life changing. (plus their fondness for Jagermeister got them labeled "Alcoholica.")

Mrs. Sippington! Your hot take on a song is better than my YEARS of listening. This was my first METAL song I ever heard. Picture a kid, listening to the clock radio under the covers, way past bedtime. My rock station was playing this new segment called, "Metal Shop." And I heard the bells. I hope you heard mine. Just subscribed!

Awesome editing. Appreciate you don't pause the song, it kills me. We, who knows, want to see the reaction of people who don't, and hear their thoughts after. You're doing a great job!!!! The ending of this musical piece is evil, the whole song is I know, but the ending IS evil. Stay safe all.

Escape is a softer early Metallica song, even though it’s still heavy… it’s almost like pre-metalcore (Killswitch Engage would do an awesome cover). I love that song even though a lot of gatekeepers diss it.

When Metallica was still great, you weren't born yet.I wish some young band would pick up the torch and run with it,but the reality is...there won't be any more superstar acts with so many outlets to view content.Fame is more accessible, but the ceiling is lower and fame is in smaller circles. In early MTV days, everyone tuned in to one outlet. Now it's all niches on too many platforms

Please react to; Metallica; -The Four Horsemen -Disposable Heroes -Welcome Home (Sanitarium) -Creeping Death -Orion (instrumental) W.A.S.P. - Wild Child The Last Command Cries in the Night Jack Action Widowmaker Megadeth; Tornado of Souls My Last Words (you definitely need to pull up the words for this one) Ronnie James DIO; Holy Diver Hungry for Heaven Sacred Heart Rainbow in the Dark Children of the Sea Metal Church; Watch the Children Pray Method to your Madness Over My Dead Body Gods of Wrath Burial at Sea Iron Maiden; -Wasted Years -Stranger in a Strange Land -Run to the Hills Krokus; Screaming in the Night *Be sure to pull up the lyrics with each one. Metal is a form of lyrical art that is best appreciated when you analyze and understand the meaning of each song. IMO it’s best to start with studio versions, as some live versions are messed with by the bands and if you aren’t familiar with the song or it’s meaning, it can loose some of its ability to convey its true meaning/definition of the song when it’s done more casually in a live setting. Just a thought.. Best of luck in your metal journey!

Now they're so old and domesticated they should be called Aluminumfoilica. When they started out, they wanted to put all the "dinosaurs" from arena rock bands into retirement. Now,they ARE the dinosaurs that need to retire. The truth of it is,most of the fanbase wasn't even born yet the last time they were great.
