Most people know “Against All Odds” is an original Phil Collins’ song. No one is claiming the original by artists who covered it. People are obviously going to refer to this version as a Mariah Carey cover since Morissette was obviously singing Mariah’s rendition note-by-note, run-by-run. If she had sung it more like Phil or done her own thing with the song, it would only make sense to refer to it as a Phil Collin’s cover. In the same way, countless covers of “I Will Always Love You” are described as a Whitney Houston cover because the singer was covering Whitney’s version, not Dolly’s even though Dolly was the original singer. If they were covering Dolly’s version, then people would obviously expect that her name is credited, not Whitney’s.

Needless to say, some songs should never be sung by any one other than the original singer. Phil Collins wrote this song. Sorry, but in my opinion. No one should ever try to cover this song because no one will be able to sing it as good as he does. Check out him singing it live and you will see what I'm talking about.
