Michael Jackson allowed Nas to sample Human Nature, as long as he agreed not to curse. Nas pulled it off. The GOAT of pop and the GOAT of rap!!

This was my first time hearing Nas. I slept on the Main Source joint, Zebrahead soundtrack and the MC Serch song. Those all predated "It Ain't Hard to Tell." I played this song for months until the album dropped in April and I was right at the record store on the release date.

Nas was one of those rappers who was embraced by both the streets and the backpackers, because his lyricism was top notch. The two crowds started to really diverge by the late '90s and '00s, when mainstream rap turned extra commercial.

I remember this was his break out single and my older brother and his friends was anticipating the video but I remember them criticizing the video cuz it was just images of him rapping but this single was a classic and his breakout single along with NY state of mind. This is young Nas hanging out in the background of Rakim and Kool G Rap studio sessions, absorbing game, when he get his shot he come with this heat right here. Rakim changed how people rapped, Nas change how people made songs and what they rapped about.

The "braggadocious rap" style is an MC staple... if you listen to most hip hop from the '80s and '90s, that's mostly what you're going to hear from any artist... because hip hop is based on battling and attitude. You have to believe you're the best and that no one can fw you. Even the B-boys and DJs battled each other. That actually goes back to jazz. Jazz cats were battling each other back in the 1920s. They used to call it "cutting contests," because their instrument was called an "axe."
