Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man. The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970 (just think about those real estate prices compared to now!). Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused. Peace out.

Thanks for reacting to Neil Young. He has written so many classic songs and has been performing for decades. He wrote the classic protest song “Ohio”. It was written after the killing of four Kent State students by the Ohio National Guard. The students were peacefully protesting the Vietnam War when the Guard opened fire. He was so disturbed by the incident, he immediately wrote Ohio. It was recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. It’s worth a listen. Love your channel. 👏👏🥰

I've seen Neil 12 times. First concert was with Crazy Horse in 1987. I was 18 years old. In fact it was my first concert ever. Most of his concerts, that I've seen anyway have been acoustic for the first half. Then rip your face off, full on for the second half. There was only one concert I was not impressed with and that was his Harvest Moon concert. Neil played with Booker T and the MGs and it was great. It was the opening acts that sucked ass. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. They were absolutely horrible live. And I had to sit for over two hours listening to that crap. To this day I still won't listen to anything by them. Maybe their live performances have gotten better ? When I saw them they were both fairly new to the scene. 91 ? 92? Somewhere around there.

Neil Young has a distinctive voice, and songs that will last my lifetime and more. When he was with Crosby Stills Nash and Young, imo, brought out the best in them. His lyrics and music spans from folk * check out Harvest Moon * to straight out rock, joining Pearl Jam to play his classic * Keep on Rockin in the Free World. Look at Eddie Vedder as an artist with a group Pearl Jam, and solo. Eddie absolutely knows what Neal Young is about, and he so respects this amazing artist, who does things his way. He IS his own drummer, not into the celebrity ego scene, that so many feed off of. I love this about him. Rather, as this video shows, he is not into fancy clothes, nor flashing concert settings. He is there simply to sing and play his songs, and puts everything into it. A great artist indeed.

I'm 35 and have always listened to a lot of music but was never a Neil Young fan and unfortunately think he has changed in his old age but this performance absolutely blows me away. Great writing and performance nothing but repect

@squaaaaak3178 his "voice" went from exceptional open and free speech and questioning authority to actively and very publicly demanding censorship of open and free speech that questions authority. To me it unfortunately tarnished his legacy. As you grow old through experience your views obviously change its just sad to see someone become the thing they used to fight against.

@@menwithven8114 couldn't agree more..I love his music but his facist censorship views betray his establishment WEF views...his dangerous vilification of joe rogan was a dead give away...Springsteen .also showed his true colours also...paper tiger rebels...like so many of the laurel canyon creations..when you look behind the mask..you find establishment puppets and camelions

I have loved Neil Young for a very long time and I never knew this was about an old man that worked on his ranch. It probably colors the song for you , hearing it for the first time. Without the explanation, we all just loved the song and the old man applied to any old man, so it is universal, in that respect!

I’m about to turn 70 and the Harvest album was the soundtrack of my teen years. Old Man is such a classic from this album and from Neil Young.

Great reaction Polo, thank you. In 1977 my older brother got into Neil Young, so by default so did I. His music has been part of my life ever since. Harvet Moon is my all time favourite.

When my husband and I were dating, we went on a road trip and this was the only tape we had in the car. We wore it out so it always has a special place in my heart. My husband died a couple of years ago (after 48 happy years of marriage) so this brought tears to my eyes. I can still sing every track word for word. It's a great album.

You got it 100% right when you said “so much power” coming from just one guy and his acoustic guitar. The way he can fill up a room with his songs is amazing.. something full bands struggle with at times. If you just listened without thinking about it you would assume there was another person on guitar. And yeah for someone with a “quirky voice” his voice is amazing

I enjoy watching your reactions and I know you're listening, which brings me a lot of Pure Joy Sometimes. Canadian here, eh? I'm an old Hippy, but not as old as Neil. I started music lessons in 1965 at 5 years old. Both my parents played music. My Mother's influence was country, folk, honky tonk, traditional. My Fathers influence was Jazz, Blues, Big Band, the Crooners the Singers, Dancers. Black and White, Hollywood Musicals. I have a huge appreciation for what I think of as country/folk/rock which Neil Young is the Master of All. Sometimes altogether, or different combinations of them. He's for real, sincere, cares a lot, and doesn't give shit what people think of him. He's political and outspoken, he has pissed off a many, but History has proven him to be right most of the time, and way ahead of the curve. My wife and I saw Neil on his Rebel Tour a few years ago. His touring band was 4, 20 something young dudes, called; The Promise of the Real, with two members being Willy Nelson's Sons. The Whole Concert was the Heavy, Grunge Rock Neil, from over the decades of his career. After 13 years of music lessons from 1965 to 1978 , I also was captured by Progressive Rock, and played in a progrock band for 4 years in the 1980's. I love both kinds of "music genres." ✌🇨🇦🤝🌎 🎶 My mention for a Neil Young Song, would be Pocahontas. A progrock request would be one many of your listeners would enjoy but likely haven't heard, called; Music of the Spheres by the band Argent, from their Nexus Album. There's a good Audio version on KZbin with the most views.

This song reminds me of my relationship with my dad. " Old man Look at my life, I'm a lot like you"... the problem is my dad was a prick. The world became better when he died in 2000. I strive to be better than him but I fall short. I am a much better dad than he was because I actually love my kids... but I still make the same mistakes he made. I hate myself for that. I don't want to be him, but I am.

David E., you are not alone. It's tough to know what to do if you didn't experience good parenting yourself. You know what you don't want to do, but you never learned how to cope in a better way. The little bit I've learned I've learned from hanging around people in recovery. Like me, they are learning how to live life in a healthier way. Also, therapy helped me a lot if you have the money and can find a good therapist. I wish you all the best in your struggle.

I feel your pain. My ex-Wife said the "best thing and the worst thing" to me when during an argument she said "you're just like your father'". She was right, so I have tried to change ever since. I often let my DNA show through, but then I do my best to stop it and repair the damage. It starts with knowing there is a problem and wanting to change it. Keep working at it and when thinking clearly, let those you love know it.

@@williampagdon4822 This comment hit home. Thanks! All of my relationships were so corrosive and nasty. When we fought, we fought hard. Screaming and yelling and calling each other names... Then I met my wife. I did that to her. The things my dad taught me. I yelled, I screamed, I cussed and called her a bitch... She let it go until we weren't angry anymore. Then she told me she would not stick around if I kept up the anger and the nasty words. I fixed that and we've been married for almost 18 years now. It's because of my wife that I am somewhat normal lol. But dad creeps in once in a while. This song just reminds me of a time when my dad's influence made me a bad person. And in a lot of ways still does.

No…😂😂😂😂😂 I subjected my sons to every kind of music I could. Just turned 68, and this song I think was from the late 60s. I see you listening to songs with words that take you away from here, and into your mind where you can think. Our generation was so so very fortunate. Music just fills my soul……brings me to a place in time I can remember. ❤❤❤❤

Essential artist for my 65 years. So much more than a guitar god. In “Ambulance Blues” 2 great lines “I never knew a man who could tell so many lies. He has a different for every set of eyes. How can he remember who he’s talking to. But I know it isn’t me, and I hope it isn’t you.” “You’re all just pissin in the wind. You don’t know it, but you are, and there ain’t nothing like a friend that’ll tell when you’re just pissing in the wind.” Written when he was 24. Perhaps not for this show, but a brilliant song.
