Late 1972, half a year after release of 'the needle ...' he died from an overdose ... 'Every junkie is like a setting sun..' You're right, sad song. But Neil Young is amazing! Here's the back story...hope you don't mind! He wrote this as a warning to all musicians because of the effect that heroin had on his band mate & good friend from Crazy Horse, Danny Whitten & other musicians he knew that were struggling with addiction. Neil ended up firing him and giving him money to go to rehab. Whitten didn't go & od'd later that year...after the song was already released. I would think that he knew it was primarily about him. When Neil says open the Cellar door, he's referring to a bar they played where Whitten was extremely high. Neil has MANY awesome songs...either with Crazy Horse, as a solo artist, with Buffalo Springfield, or with the phenomenal Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Definitely a fav of mine. Thats great, i never knew that....i always thought neil did partake at some point tho, like so many others did, i thought (“think”) i read a rolling stone article/interview decades ago, i could be totally mis-remembering tho....with how many greats who did do that stuff and all the amazing art they made, ive always been equally impressed by the artists who didnt do heroin and made great art too, so, its not like im arguing and looking to hear from u that at some point neil did do dope....ur comment is just super interesting to me, i want to research now...i never delved into neil’s history like I should have, like i did with lennon and dylan.

Sadly, Danny Whitten died the same night. The story has it that he used the money Young hand given him along the plane ticket to LA to buy heroin which he overdosed. However it was a mixture of diazepam and alcohol. He tried to get rid of the heroin on alcohol but while diazepam was a painkiller for his knee. The mixture turned out fatal.

He wrote this for Danny Whitten. Danny made an album with his band called Crazy Horse and then joined up with Neil. They became like brothers. If you have never heard Neil's album "Everybody knows this is nowhere" you should. Then you will know what a great loss Danny was. Neil spoke of all the great art that has been lost to heroine. peace

I wish i could say the same. I’ve lost more than a few friends over the years to that and other forms of substance abuse. A Sous Chef i worked with for years, had in his younger years struggled with heroin during the ‘80’s he was a musician in a punk band in NYC. His band mate and best friend one day asked him to shoot him up with heroin. His best friend OD’d two years later. I dont think John ever forgave himself or if he will. He feels responsible because he literally put the needle in his arm. I went to the service with him. It was very rough. Thats the horrible thing about the disease of addiction. Yes it hurts the user, but the people that love them the most end up suffering more. Because they have to watch the decline. Until the person hits absolute rock bottom and makes the choice to live or stay on that road which only ends one way for most. 🪦

Had friends buy me a concert ticket. I said no thanks. They dragged me there and I’m so glad they did. Solo, surrounded by guitars, sitting in the middle, and just grabbing an acoustic one song after another, he finished the show doing songs and an old fashion pump organ. The whole arena at the MGM in Las Vegas was just vibrating. It was an amazing show something I’ll never forget.

Neil young is amazing. Buffalo Springfield did a song called “For what it’s worth” I was so moved. Four dead in Ohio. It’s about the Nixon years. I was born in 1950 & I’ve been so fortunate to experience so much great music. I love classical music as well. My husband turned me on to Beethoven, & so many real old artists. Oh Tom Waits sings about his cars & the weather, which is like a play on words with his love life. He sings the theme song in part of the series The Peaky Blinders. It’s written by an Australian guy named Nick Cave. His band is The Bad Seeds. A bit difficult to listen to at times, but he’s very clever. Tom Waits isometimes a performance artist. He seems very crazy but he’s actually married & has a few kids. I’d like to see him at home. He has achieved his very raspy voice. Leonard Cohn was a beautiful poet & helped other folks sing his words. Hallelujah is one of my favorites. He had a pretty raspy voice, too many cigarettes. Q

Like my late friend, Leonard Cohen, Neil was a poet first, rather than "just" a songwriter. He never felt the need to overstep on stage (or in the studio, for that matter). This particular song is a perfect example of Neil's work. Here he sits, alone on the stage, just a man, his guitar & a message!! New Sub. TBH, my life has been so steeped in the world of music (vocalist, play 5 instruments & production) that I sometimes find it very hard to believe that reactors are hearing some of these "classics" for the first time!

Neil Young has been around making great rock music from the beginning. I was listening to him in Toronto when he was playing with the Mynah Birds when a guy who became Rick James was the lead singer I believe that was back in 64. He's still rocking.

Neil Young, who I like to call THE MAN, is one of the best recording artists, EVER. He does much more than solo acoustic, he is also known as "The Godfather Of Grunge", for some of his electric works. This song is based on real life experiences, early in his career, and his lamentations on them. My recommendation to everyone who has never experienced Neil is to watch his concert film "Rust Never Sleeps" recorded in 1978, at one of the peaks of his career, he even directs under the name Bernard Shakey. Best songs: "Powderfinger", "Cortez The Killer", "Cinnamon Girl", "Harvest Moon", "Sugar Mountain", "After The Goldrush", "Sedan Delivery", "Like A Hurricane". "Thrasher", "My My Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue), "Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)" and "Tonight's The Night". Oh yeah, and "Rockin' In The Free World", "This Note's For You" and he just released a new album last year called "Barn".

"...once the needle goes in...There's no turning back..."...Fun note, I was 2 years clean when this came out on "Harvest"...Best friend died in my arms from a heroin overdose in 1969. Not sure why he went and I didn't. Same amount from the same sack and the same needle. As far as I know we'd both shot up the same number of times too. I still did it 3 or 4 more times after...50+ years ago and I still feel a little tug now and again. When folks tell what a wonderful place Seattle is, just know it's ALWAYS had a very seedy underbelly. Had we not moved south I likely wouldn't have made it to 18...If not for that, then some other way.

Neil is from Canada (like Joni Mitchel...another great singer-songwriter...they "came up" at the same time in the 60's..) & Bob is from Duluth, Minnesota just south of the Canadian border. Apparently, that cold weather makes for some introspective, poetic songwriting.!? Of course they've ALL written "rock music songs" which are incredible, time-tested songs.!! Songs of a long gone era. A bit of a story teller. Not just Drugs but more. He sings of the life surrounding this culture. Other song writers sing ballads of other cultures and life styles. Just ponder Jimmy Buffet.

A very sad song but so true especially if you’ve have or had a loved one fighting for his or hers life I tear up every time I hear this song. For me my loved one survived but to all those who didn’t you’re miss and loved🙏🏼

One of my favourites from Neil. Such a powerful message and such a unique style vocally with how he draws out the words which I've always loved and it's probably my favourite in terms of guitar work which was what made me decide to cover it myself. I think his most beautiful song is Harvest Moon though which I see you've reacted to also so I'm gonna check that out next!

Good reaction! If you want to hear some of his best electric side, try 'Cortez the Killer', 'Powderfinger', or 'Down by the River'. For another great acoustic track, try 'Thrasher'.
