you gotta understand, this WAS the new beat back in the day. this was a completely new sound, there was nothing like it before. all the screamo you know today goes back to this song and album, there was nothing similar in punk and hardcore by the time. we listened to this and were like "what the f ... oh wow, this is good!!"

That whole album "Shape of Punk to Come" (an homage to Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come) is INCREDIBLE. These guys are consummate musicians AND have the punk/hardcore ethos. You gotta do "Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull" !! Not many albums better than this in the last 25 years.

I wouldn't consider refuse to be pop punk or heavy metal, I would call them Hardcore. The distinction between heavy metal and hardcore might not be super apparent to someone who's new to heavy heavy white people music, but as you listen to more and more, you'll start to notice that there is a pretty distinct difference. Heavy metal is great, but I personally do think that hardcore is typically more fun.

The Shape of Punk to Come was released in 1998 and is one of the most influential albums for the post hardcore and metalcore genres. The singer, Dennis Lyxzen, went on to front a band called The (International) Noise Conspiracy with a very different sounds, but a more overtly political message. It's not "hard" music, but I've long considered their song "Only Lovers Left Alive" to be a kind of sequel to New Noise.

I've been popping in to watch a video or two every once in a while on your channel for a few months now mostly for some of your reactions to SOAD and Metallica.
