The absolute iconic song of the 80's. There was a before and an after Blue Monday for dance music. And that 12-inch version is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time in the UK. I-CO-NIC period 😄👍❤

They were very clever with getting that record of best selling 12". At time of realease it was only issued on 12" you could not get a 7" version as with other artists also it was not on the alblum so if you wanted it you had to buy the 12" which I did on day of release and I still have it . I love the cover design as well.

This song is even more incredible when you learn how primitive the tech was at the time. Samples on floppy discs, so little memory in the synth they had to swap out the disc mid song to get that thunder crash. New Order had some great songs that featured a more organic, guitar sound. My favorites are Temptation and Age of Consent. Perfect Kiss is a great synth epic to check out as well.

Oh yeah, this was HUGE in the alternative dance clubs. Always packed the floor and was played for years and years. New Order ruled the dance floor with their 12" mixes. Other songs to definitely check out include Thieves Like Us, 1963, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith, Perfect Kiss, Touched by the Hand of God, Subculture, State of the Nation, and Shellshock. Always play the 12" or extended mixes, the videos are fine but nothing like the magnificent dance mixes. They are in a league of their own.

First: Your reactions are usually natural and pure, that is too much for the times we live in. Good! Facts: · The song was meant as a tool, to let it playing while they leave the stage after a show, but then (happily) it went out of their hands. · Roots of the song are Donna Summers' "Our Love", Kraftwerk's "Uranium", Ennio Morricone's OST "For a few dollars more", "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" by Sylvester, "Dirty Talk" by Kleim + MBO. · It's 1983, the song is handicraft... · There's no chorus... · Bernard delivers the lyrics like he doesn't feel anything and the robotic background vocals helped that coldness. · The other side of the record is an instrumental version but slightly different named "The Beach". · Joy Division was a real future influence in bands like The Cure, Editors, Interpol or The Smiths and so many artists and bands name it as an main pillar in their own sound (U2, Moby, NIN, Radiohead). When the harassed Ian Curtist (a modern Romantic urban POET) took his live at 23, the band change the name as they have been agreed. · This is the best selling 12" single of all times. · There are 3 "legal" versions of "Blue Monday": 1983, 88 and 95. But there are a bunch of covers by other artist. · Salvo, you choose the last video for the song but the music is the 88's version, so "not so bad". ;) ·The cover design for the 12" is considered a work of art, a classic graphic design by Peter Saville, who tried to imitate those old 5 1/4" Floppy Discs for the early computers. He created colour code for the cover hiding the name of the band and song title as well the catalogue number in Factory Records label (creators of the club The Haçienda and the MaDchester Sound) · The first edition was so costly, due to the design, that they lost lots of money. So... · There are no band name, song title or anything like that in the cover of the vinyl. · You say something like you move your feet or bobble the head when listening to this, in my case I dance this millions of times since they release the song in the early eighties, true, and its true too that I can not avoid to pay attention to AAAAAALL the sounds, noises, music, lyrics and my mind goes astray. ·This is more than a dance song. · "blue Monday" is a single for promoting an album that doesn't include the song! ··· If you please you can try more from New Order like: 'Ceremony' (the shadow of Ian Curtis is present), 'Bizarre Love Triangle', 'True Faith', 'Confusion' (a hard techno remix of this one sounds in the "Blood Shower scene" in the movie Blade), 'Subculture', 'Your Silent Face', 'Tutti Frutti' (w/ LaRoux), 'Stray Dog' (w/ Iggy Pop), 'Plastic' (w/ LaRoux).

This song was ahead of it's time and is a mastepiece, a proto rave party song. It wasn't a hit in the mainstream world, but in alternative dance clubs. You have to understand that alternative clubs at that time were "the new thing", college people of the gen X like me were filling those clubs. And beelive me, back then, as soon as I heard the first notes of Blue Monday, I'd leave everything there to rush for the dancefloor, swatting my life to death.

I remember when they played this on "Top of the Pops" here in the UK, just as the record had broken into the Top 20. Normally, this level of exposure would propel a record up the charts, so big was this show back then. However, New Order insisted on playing live, instead of lip synching to a backing track as was usually the case with other acts.. Suffice it to say their playing didn't sound quite like the studio version and the next week the record went down the charts rather than up. They also produced a 12 inch version of the record, which became the highest selling 12 inch single to that date. Trouble was, they spent so much on the record cover design that it actually cost them more money to market the record than they made in sales. Great, great band though. Check out their albums Low Life and Technique.

This sounds so much like the stuff The Pet Shop Boys were doing around then, but definitely more automatic and minimalist. Brits were awfully tired of punk rock, 70s disco, and hard rock was an American import, but this sounded so British, so good when you were high on whatever. Even the girls could get in to this one. The funny thing was nobody had any idea what the band looked like, and they did not care, they just vibed to it for hours and hours. Kind of departure from the edgy pretty boy stuff. And it was totally pop, but sounded better than pop. It also sounds really androgynous, sexy but sexless, not male or female energy, but slightly inhuman, electro beat. This song launched a thousand imitators and was the birth of the EDM movement, or one of them.
