I remember rocking out to this song so much. The "don't have a gun" line hit different after he shot himself to death. Dave Grohl slaying those drums tho. RIP Kurt.

I like that you really caught the contradictions. Getting to the root meaning of Nirvana songs is not easy; Kurt said that there were often multiple storylines and prospectives, and he liked to throw in contradictions to make things confusing. It can be best to not try and figure out what was going on in Kurt's head when he wrote it, instead use what goes on in your own when you hear it. As he said when asked to explain lyrics: "it's your crossword puzzle". Personally, I've always seen Come As You Are as reflecting the confusing and contradictory social expectations one can be confronted with.

Not to be morbid and I it's probably not what Kurt meant, but that line, "I swear I don't have a gun." could also be seen as contradictory for those who know the tragic fate that Kurt met...but to put Kurt into a kind of context, Dave Grohl the drummer, when asked what it was like living with Kurt in their youth when not making music he said, "It was Super Mario World from sundown to sunrise." (May be paraphrasing a bit, but that's the essence)...Kurt and crew were just normal kids with all the dark thoughts that come with adolescence which are pretty evident throughout Nirvana's work, a sense of boredom, melancholy, meaninglessness, contradiction, self-hatred, sadism, masochism, ect. The "Darker" side of humanity, which would also be a common factor among many grunge bands...(I'll probably never forget that quote because the SNES was a big part of my childhood as well)

I distinctly remember everything I knew about music changing overnight as Nirvana hit the masses with, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” My 12 y/o self had never experienced anything like that before, and I’m still not sure I’ve seen anything similar since. Big-hair bands became irrelevant so fast! PS, Kurt was murdered

Kurt Cobain was a genius and the king of walking contradiction. The "I don't have a gun" line is very eerie if Kurt killed himself with a shotgun as is said. And even more eerie if someone killed him with that gun. A part of music died when Kurt did. Great reactions!

Kurt's lyrics were rather abstract and hard to decipher... But 'Come as you are' is an interesting way of him telling someone to be real and up front... not fake and backstabbing... Say what's on ur mind and I swear I won't hurt u or hit u hard...
