In the early 90s, four bands emerged from the obscure Seattle underground, and took the world by storm. They were: Nirvana Soundgarden Alice in Chains Pearl Jam Collectively, they were known as “Grunge.” Please check out all four of these amazing groups. (And there were many others. But this is the starting point.)

This song literally changed my life. I was 13 when it was released. I had always enjoyed listening to music. But when I heard this song I wanted to become a musician. There’s no way it can be explained how this song hit us when it came out; you just had to be there. It was just SO different from the glam and and flashiness and hair metal bands we were used to in the 80s (bands like Guns N’ Roses, Skid Row, Poison, Warrant). This song came out when I was 13 and subsequently threw me headlong into the grunge scene throughout my time in high school-so glad I got to be a teen in the 90s 😊 The lyric “Here we are now, entertain us” is such a 90s teen vibe Edit: Teen Spirit was a very popular brand of deodorant-fairly new at the time-that all of us girls carried in our gym bags. It definitely smelled like Teen Spirit all the time in the girl’s locker room. (I think Teen Spirit still exists but I’m not sure.) And “load up on guns, bring your friends” didn’t hit the same as it does today because this was a few years before Columbine. Like, I don’t remember it ever crossing our minds that someone might come shoot up the school. Another grunge band called Pearl Jam released a song a few years later called “Jeremy,” and I remember the video absolutely shocking people my age.

So much could be said about this song. Where to start? This song defined my generation (Gen X). It was the first time we heard a song that expressed our collective apathy, depression and rage. This changed music and clothing styles from that point forward. That line "Oh, well, whatever. Nevermind." is so iconic. Gen Xers always said "whatever" and "never mind" because we had Boomer parents who never listened to us no matter what we said. When Kurt Cobain died, it was so very traumatic. I remember I was in 12th grade and when I showed up at school I didn't know what had happened (no internet in 1994) and everyone was crying and wailing. When I found out I was in shock. It was like "Of course he's dead, anyone who understood our generation is gonna die young." - that was the level of depression we had. There were also a lot of copycat suicides all over the country. I can't even begin to tell you this man's impact.

Cannot be understated the impact that Nirvana had on music. Many critics said that they where are the modern-day Beatles and how they changed up everything. Even though this was the birth of grunge actually Kurt Cobain hated the term grunge and he never thought of themselves as grunge. He classified Nirvana as being a punk hard rock band but in actuality he hated labels of any kind. He came along at a time when there was just a lot of superficial music that didn't mean anything except drugs and partying and just no real substance to it except for a few songs here and there. Kurt wrote all of his songs himself he's considered one of the best songwriters of his generation. But he was also plagued by depression and coming from a broken home, like so many they think that Fame and Fortune will fix it when in fact it just magnifies that and he got into heroin and ended up committing suicide. He has a daughter that's an adult now, though she was just a baby when he died. Who knows what he would have accomplished had he lived. He was a member as we call it of the 27 club. Those that died at 27 such as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and of modern-day Amy winehouse. All i believe drug related. He changed the world of music before he died, so that will always be his legacy.

The lead singer of this group, Kurt Cobain, died at age 27 (part of the 27 club), on April 5, 1994, three years after this song came out. Depending upon who you ask, he either penned a suicide note and shot himself or Courtney Love killed him, or one of the other 100 or so conspiracy theories. After Kurt's death the drummer (at that time... there were a few) for Nirvana, Dave Grohl, formed The Foo Fighters. The bassist, Krist Novoselic, is a member of Giants in the Trees and supergroup (made up of members of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nivana) 3rd Secret.

Yeah, the singer Kurt struggled with addiction as did his wife, Courtney Love. (It's rumored that she killed him or drove him to suicide by shotgun). The drummer is Dave Grohl, front man for The Foo Fighters...he also played with Queens of the Stone Age for a bit...supremely talented musician and super down-to-earth nice guy. He released a budget indie horror comedy flick recently about a haunted recording studio...Studio 666...that was basically him, the band, and his friends just messin' around, making a kind of Shawn of the Dead style comedy horror movie...

Pike street market downtown Seattle had the official Spoon man that Soundgarden had in their video and wrote the song about. He was a genuine guy and was amazing on the spoons 🥄. Seattle is a vine for sure. Soundgarden is an incredible band as well. Chris and Kurt both went through depression and from my understanding we’re good friends. 🙏😇✨

The title of the song was taken from a misunderstanding. After being out all night with friends Kurt woke up to "Kurt smells like teen spirit" written on the wall by one of his friends. He thought it was some deep thing so he used it for the name of the song he was working on. He found out after the song was released that "Teen Spirt" is a brand of woman's deodorant (marketed primarily to teen girls.) His friend wrote it on the wall because it is what his girlfriend at the time wore and they were teasing him because he smelled like his girlfriend's very feminine deodorant!

I remember where I was when Kurt Cobains suicide was announced in the radio. 😢 hearts broke all over the world. Kurt Cobain and Billy Corigan from the smashing pumpkins were at odds over trashy ass Courtney Love from the band Hole, who was Kurts wife at the time. This MAJORLY contributed to his depression, ultimately contributing to his death. 😢

I was a college student from the late 80's to the early 90's. By 1989 the whole Glam Rock of the 80's was starting to wear off on me. From my point of view, the entire music scene was starting to sound the same with a lot of corporate sounding influences. Hip Hop was in its early stages and NWA was making a name for themselves... a shock to the system. NWA exploded onto the scene in 1988 and 89. I kept looking for a rock version of NWA. In 1989 I was invited to spend a summer in Seattle Washington with a young married couple (who were class mates of mine at the University of Arkansas) They had a small family run business in the city and said that I would love the young vibe on the area. I could work in their business during the day and take in the live music scene at night, while making money for the next semester. There was a new music revolution brewing in Seattle area at that time. It was only known as "The Seattle Sound". Later it would be known as "Grunge". Nirvana was one of those Seattle bands. I did not take them up on their offer as I had to keep working my way through college and I was taking some summer courses. Had I known then what was about to happen... nothing would have kept me from a summer in Seattle. Imagine all the bands I could have seen in the summer of 1989 just before the grunge explosion! Two years after declining the invitation to spend a summer in Seattle, I heard "Smells like Teen Spirit" EXPLODING out of the radio in the fall of 1991, I knew my wish had been granted. Nirvana was to rock like NWA was to Hip Hop. Nirvana (and other grunge bands) shown a harsh light on real life and serious issues from the perspective of the grunge subculture, all while introducing us to fantastic rock sounds and riffs. Gone was the glitzy, glam, big hair, and bright colors of the 1980's over the top party rock. Nirvana and other Grunge bands changed rock music like NWA and other "gangsta rap" groups changed Hip Hop. As others have said, Kurt killed himself in 1994. As a way to deal with the pain and loss, Nirvana's drummer, Dave Grohl, went on to create his own songs and place them on a demo tape to show his friends. The tape was so good his friends wanted him to create his own band. The Foo Fighters were born. Dave Grohl and The Foo Fighters is one of the greatest rock bands of the last 25 years. They are still cranking out albums and still on tour. Even with the loss of Dave's own drummer and friend just a couple years ago, the Foo Fighters press on. Also, Dave Grohl is one of the nicest people on the planet. He is truly a genuinely nice guy. He's even nice to the paparazzi. Both Nirvana and The Foo Fighters have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Long live Nirvana. Rest in Peace Kurt Cobain.

Kurt Cobaine was a next level talent. Along with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and others. It is very sad that he suffered from deression and killed himself. He would have entertained us for years.

Sadly after the lead singer, Kurt Cobain, took his own life the band was no more. Something good came from it though, the drummer, Dave Grohl, formed the band Foo Fighters.

At your intro I think you meant to say '1.6 BILLION views'. (Not '1.6 Million views). It's 1.6 BILLION views.

Bodycount Ice-T, just youtube it. Nirvava is now the 90's, and I was there and I'm fine with it, call it "grunge" it isn't. Rage against the machine, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, you have a mammoth rabbit hole to go done. but Bodycount was banned, so less heard, go for it
