80's hair bands had a 10 year reign on the charts, it was time for something new. At this point rock was on it's way out anyway, with rap starting to take over the charts. I do not even think grunge lasted as long as disco. People can only take so much of self loathing and being depressed and miserable all the time.

I still get chills when I hear " With the lights out". Such a powerful song. I was a teenager in the 70's and had given up on Rock music by the mid 80's (hair-metal was not my thing). This woke me right up. I love how the solo is just the melody of the song. Went out and got the album as soon as I found out who it was. I was in my early/mid 30's. My wife couldn't stand them! The marriage didn't last, but my love for Nirvana has...

This song isn't really about the industry. "Often asked to explain the meaning of the song that made him a household name, Cobain generally acknowledged that it was meant to be a call to arms. "It has revolutionary themes, but I don't really mean it in a militant [light]," he said in a fall 1991 interview. "The generation's apathy is getting out of hand. [I'm] pleading to the kids, 'Wake up!'"

He began refusing to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit" live, or "purposefully performing it sloppily, just to mess with the audiences he cynically saw as flocking to Nirvana shows just to hear that song while it was flavour of the month," Al Horner wrote for NME

Please do Drain You. "Cobain cited "Drain You" as one of his favorite compositions, telling David Fricke in a 1993 Rolling Stone interview that he thought it was as good, if not better, than the band's biggest hit, "Smells Like Teen Spirit. I love the lyrics, and I never get tired of playing it," he said. "Maybe if it was as big as 'Teen Spirit', I wouldn’t like it as much." I suggest the Nevermind version first. Then watch it live at the mtv studio (kurt has red hair), and then in Paradiso, Amsterdam (the drummer breaks his stick during the song and swaps it mid song)
