If you like Kirstie in this one, you should check out "Shallow." Her vocals and her confidence have both matured. I'm not saying she didn't always hold down her fifth of Pentatonix, she's always been fantastic with vocals that balance or cut through beautifully as needed, but she's just, I dont know, more Kirstie about it, now, lol. You'll see.

I always loved her leads, especially in 'Rather Be', where we got to hear her in her lower register. But, you are correct, her time on Broadway doing 'Kinky Boots' seems to have notably bolstered her confidence.

One of my favorites - Kirstie kills the vocals in this one! The theme for this video was that they were supposed to be representing an old time photograph, so everyone was supposed to be pretty still. Since you've seen a few videos, you probably know that Scott sings with his hands as much as his voice, and he apparently had to white-knuckle the chairs he was holding onto to keep from using his hands!

In the PTX timeline, this song is unique because Kirstie, Kevin and Avi didn't really sing lead on any songs from their first 2 EPs. You may hear a line or two from Kirstie and Avi, but the main solos were by Mitch and Scott. So this was a complete shock to see Mitch and Scott being backing vocals only. By the first Christmas album, Kirstie and Avi started singing more lead vocals, and would later usually having a song each to sing solo on upcoming albums. Kevin was always the "surprise" solo that would end a song. It's now weird when only one person sings lead vocals.

i get how you would want to see this song in 5 diff ways but, there is a reason only Kirstie could sing the lead perfectly.. its because the original song had a strong emotional female voice leading it (Christina Aguilera). although everyone in the group could sing it well, PTX knows how to play to their strengths and likes to pay homage to the original but also put their own spin on it.

It was originally sung by A Great Big World + Christina Aguilera and it was played ad nauseam. I didn’t care for the original so I didn’t listen to the PTX version for a pretty long time after they released it. BIG mistake. I absolutely love this version. The arrangement is genius and Kirstie slays it. Loved your reaction!

Kevin is a beast. He's probably the most talented of the entire group. He plays three musical instruments (if I recall correctly), he graduated from Yale University, and he speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. Go search KZbin for some videos of him speaking Chinese, it'll blow your mind.

👉This was Kirstie's time to shine! If you pay attention to all the videos THEY ALL emote when they sing! Doesn't matter if they lead the song or not they show SO MUCH emotion. Very much enjoyed your reaction, thanks for your open appreciation for this wonderful group. I have one big question for you. I have watched no less than 50 reactions to this video and not one person has mentioned the ending note Kevin sings and plays on his cello. But something caught your attention although you didn’t really say what it was. Yet, you definitely noticed it because you said something like, “ohhhhh, don’t you do that like me at the end” so you DID catch something different. Here is what I heard at the very end; Virtually all songs end on the Tonic of the key it is in. The Tonic is the first note of the scale in any given key. However, Kevin does a tiny riff at the very end that does not end on the tonic, it ends on the supertonic which is the 2nd note of the scale. This leaves a very unresolved feeling to the ending because by nature it wants to resolve down to the tonic. When we hear that resolution in music it makes us feel good because it gives us a feeling of completion, resolution. My take on why Kevin chose this is because the song itself is about unresolved issues in a relationship, thus, I think Kevin purposely ended the song on the supertonic to align the ending with the theme of the song, that of non-resolution. You have to listen very, very closely to hear it but a naturally sensitive ear or a trained musical ear will hear it. If you’d care to respond to my comment I’m dying to find out if you heard that because like I said, not one other reactor mentions it even if they did hear it. Thanks again for the great reaction!

In addition to fitting the person/voice to the lead, they also have to think about how they are going to perform the songs in concert and so they often will have songs were one person isn’t as prominent. Kirstie and Mitch could probably often switch some parts. Thanks for continuing along the PTX journey.

Every time they post to ask questions for a Q&A, I ask if they have or would consider doing their songs with different people rotating through each other’s parts. Some songs that would be “impossible” due to the bass and beat boxing but some would be manageable. It can even be hilarious if they still try like when Mitch gets a bass turn or Kirstin gets the beat boxing lol They’d have to record their new parts separately in order to make an attempt that wasn’t just solid laughter but I’d be down for them even using a background track to just rotate the word parts 😂

Most reactors seem to be able to show their songs before Avi left in 2017, without filters. This filter basically negated the need to have any video. Also most of their newer ones, especially mildly religious seem to able to be shown without filters.
