This was a most popular song and video on MTV. One of my favorite parts is when his face turns into fruit. And let us not forget the dancing chickens. Good reaction.

I find a lot of videos that were put together for MTV back then really detract from the music. Aside from that, Peter introduced me to World Music, and I am forever grateful!

Back in the day music videos were taken a little more seriously as an art form and the level of creativitiy was off the charts. So, we were getting stuff like "And She Was" by the Talking Heads, "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head, or "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler.

Gabriel (like the angel) was the lead singer in Genesis prior to Phil Collins taking over. On a side note, this whole tune is based on sexual innuendo using British slang.

Video is in stop motion and was the most expensive and time consuming to make-each frame was a single shot strung together. This among many other computer animated innovations.

he kinda forced music videos to shot by artist after that!before that they were all kinda cookie cutter tun times! Then came an artist that took music videos to the highest level... Michael Jackson!

Your initial guess on how they did the video was right on the money. They made slight changes, took a frame, made another slight change, took a frame ... and so on. It was a mix of stop-motion, claymation and pixilation techniques.

The video was an early gig for Aardman Animation, who now do Wallace & Gromit. The Japanese flute sound is a sample from the Synclavier (?) library I think

Peter Gabriel used to do I don't know if he still does some of the best concerts. It's really a perfectionist and he has so much going on on stage when he's performing that it's just amazing

When P.G. made this video, he had to lay.on the floor with a glass plate on top of him for 16yrs for the shooting as the graphics were super imposed on the glass. Amazing technology for that time period. I saw it's premier on MTV with a group of friends. We were awestruck to say the least.

New Years 1989-1990, MTV did a release of their top of the decade. This song won BEST VIDEO OF THE DECADE, and it tied for 1st place in song of the decade alongside the Eurythmics SWEET DREAMS

Good reaction. This is my most favourite video of all time. PG is one of my favourite artists too and for me, his peak was his solo career from the period mid-80s to mid-90s, including, of course, this classic. I love how the video symbolically begins and ends with depicting the start and end of life (fertilisation and embryo growth, then later PG sitting down in the chair to 'sleep' and then 'rising up' into the stars and waving goodbye), and continues the motif of reproduction and innuendo/imagery throughout, but also has hilarious visuals like the chicken dance, the vegetable face, and so on! Also, it was a clever choice to use stop motion and claymation rather than the CGI of the time (as used, for example, in Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" which was only a year before this song, but looks so dated in comparison). As a result, the only bit that looks dated is the section where PG and the dancing girls/crowd are, with clothes and hairstyles clearly of the 80s. PG's solo career is worth a deep-dive for a lot of great tracks and creative videos, including "Shock The Monkey", "Games Without Frontiers", "Big Time", "Steam" and "Digging In The Dirt". He also did great duets with Kate Bush ("Don't Give Up") and Sinead O'Connor ("Blood Of Eden"). If you find you like his work, his live performances are also a must. The whole Secret World Live tour from the early 1990s is brilliant and my personal favourite. The whole thing is on here at kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKuQl5ishb2CitU , but if you like it, do support the man by getting the DVD or download. The entire crew look like they had such a great time, the (then) new singer Paula Cole was fantastic as the female lead on some iconic PG songs in place of Kate Bush and Sinead O'Connor, and as a backing singer too. PG is one of my favourite artists for his lyrical and musical genius and the creativity of many of his video ("Sledgehammer" being one of the best IMO)

🤣..the videos of the 80's were.. unusual..lol... The song rocks if you aren't distracted by the visuals..some like it though... Fine Young Cannibals had crazy videos as well..a British band that was well received ... Next time let's see a sandwich to go with your refreshments in the corner..that was my mom voice..😁... 🌿🌿🌿

If you ever want to out the GenX-ers in any crowd, just play the first 1-2 seconds of that flute intro & watch the heads whip around. It's a Pavolian response ingrained into us from watching this video like 10,000x on MTV. 😂 And yes this entire song is a euphemism for 'sexy time' (or I guess given the title, 'going to pound town').

This stop motion might to have been considered coming from early Disney cartoons where each frame was drawn by hand then played back to back in order. There was Mickey Mouse and the movie Snow White in color that is still a beautiful movie to watch. I think gremlins was using some of this. Those this is so original in the early days of mtv music videos and so difficult and time consuming he built on what the ones before. The silent movies might have had stop motion too.

They didn’t use CGI… it’s called stop motion photography. Why expect to understand a music video? People want it fed to them.

If you focus to the genius of the video you miss the meaning of the song. Sledgehammer refers to the male appendage. Now go back and listen to the words.
