I've always loved this song. Particularly, the lyric, "Grab your things, I've come to take you home." Growing up, I always felt like my real home was ... elsewhere. And I couldn't find it. I couldn't get there. Eventually I learned to make my home wherever I am, but there's still a tiny part of me that wishes I could find a place that feels like that true home.
@skeeter88682 ай бұрын
I love that line as well. It makes me think of my parents who I lost over 30 years ago. I miss them so much! I also lost my 11 year old son over 20 years ago so things like this hit pretty hard now. I hope you have some good people around you and you find that special place. Hugs, from Canada! ✌

Hey Shon, Not sure how much you know about music... but one of the reasons this song sounds so damned unique is that it's written in 7/4 time. 7 beats per bar is super unusual, but because it has a slow melody you may want to count 4 ... when it's really Three and a Half - and that's wild! Each new bar hits slightly earlier than your brain expects and this keeps you engaged and a little psychologically off-balance. This little twist adds an extra feeling of dreamy 'surrealness' to the already trippy lyrics. It's such a vibe, man : ) Peter Gabriel is a fricken legend ; )

Peter Gabriel is a genius, you should dive into his third snd fourth solo albums, (self-titled third release with melting face on cover, and his fourth, 'Security') This is the period when he pioneered a very radical approach to production. The drums were stripped down to thunderous toms, the instruments were spread wide and deep into the mix, vocals were delivered as only Peter can, and were sometimes fractured and distorted, or whispering in your ear, or crying from a distance. He was exploring world music as well, the rhythms of Africa, Morocco, and Latin America. A true artist and innovator up to present day. Peter is still causing trouble in the world of alternative pop music with his recent album, IO ( pronounced eye-oh)
@waltercrain29102 ай бұрын
imo, peter's required catalog is his genesis career, his first 4 solo albums, "plays live" (the tour from his 4th album), and the "birdy" soundtrack, after hearing all that other stuff. the genesis stuff is other-worldly. what a band. i'd group early genesis (up to 1975) with yes, and pink floyd. genesis is a whole fantastic journey of its own.

I cannot remember when I first heard this song, maybe 20 years ago ? Like yourself from the first listen to hit me hard. The punch was shared equally between the lyrics and music. As you said, it was connected to Peter's split from Genesis. But like all music, it has broad meaning. It is one of those refreshing clear your mind kind of songs. The meaning has changed over time, as I have gotten older, to be real with you the "pack your things I'm going to take you home" rings like my late Mother reaching out and saying to change my path. Your reaction from the heart as always. Thank you. As for suggestions from Genesis, you cant beat "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" a truly powerful soulful song.

Gabriel had probably done all that was possible within the confines of Genesis; The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was a massive rock opera with a sort of confusing plot penned by Peter, but it was clearly the kind of deep thing he wanted to explore. If you want to hear what Gabriel did on his last Genesis LP, I'd go with "Carpet Crawlers."
