Gabriel era Genesis were incredible. Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway are some of the best albums ever made.

Gabriel was open to new musical genres and unafraid of change. A good example of this, and a song I strongly recommend, is "Games without frontiers". It was a sizeable hit in the UK and was clearly influenced by New Wave.

Peter Gabriel is truly the definition of an artist. His career with GENESIS was wonderful and creative... but ultimately, he wanted to pursue his own creative vision without compromise... and you can't really do that in a band with so many other creative forces (like the band had in spades). His solo work was magnificent, as well... and he took a LOT of creative chances. His 3rd album (the first four albums were all called "Peter Gabriel"... this one was nicknamed "Melt" for the cover photo) was a brilliant and original work that featured amazing talent, like Paul Weller (The Jam), Dave Gregory (XTC), Kate Bush, and Phil Collins (his Genesis bandmate on drums... truly amazing stuff. The first cut on the album, the dark and intense "INTRUDER," which featured one of the first instances of the famous "gated drum sound" (which Collins would be famous for on "In The Air"... producer Hugh Padgham would produce Phil, along with Peter's solo work, and XTC helped develop it with Phil... Peter took Phil's cymbals away for the entire "Melt" album and it's got an amazing sound. Peter Gabriel is an artist worth delving into... both with his amazing work with GENESIS (Try "THE MUSICAL BOX" or "DANCING OUT WITH THE MOONLIT KNIGHT" for starters)... and his live shows were always AMAZING. He'd wear incredible costumes that made each live appearance an experience to remember. His solo work is rich (Try "GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS," "RHYTHM OF THE HEAT," " SAN JACINTO," "BIKO," and "MOTHER OF VIOLENCE")... Peter Gabriel is a LEGEND... Musician, Writer, Humanitarian, Activist. Great reaction and commentary, as always, Nick! Cheers!

You should listen to his duo with Kate Bush 'Don't Give Up' - their voices are phenomenal together. And it's a very moving song.

Thanks for this reaction! Incredible! I was sure I had listened to Gabriel in this channel before. Nut anyway, I hope you go back to this beautiful artist more times. So many great songs and albums that it's difficult to pick just one. My suggestions are (they're obvious, btw) In Your Eyes, Games Without Frontiers and Don't Give Up (these last two with the amazing Kate Bush).

Peter's Genesis evolved, progressed, and when they split, they both continued to evolve and progress...until Genesis decided that riding the gravy train was more profitable, and became a pop band. Peter went on to create magnificent film music and the like. But the first few album of Genesis without a peter had some great pieces. Great reaction and review. Thanks for doing the homework. You'll go far.

At first I was going to suggest 'Moribund the Burgermeister', first track of Pete's first album. But now I think you need to go way the hell back. Genesis "The Knife" perhaps. Or "The Musical Box" from Nursery Cryme.

Recorded by Bob Ezrin in Toronto! I believe instead of a full kit, Allan Schwartzberg had a shaker in one hand and a drum stick hitting a telephone directory in the other; I think the "synthebam" is a synthesized drum pattern, in 7/4 time.
