If you haven't listened to a show from start to finish yet, I would highly recommend this one, 7/8/94, to break into it. You've got the entire Gamehendge saga in the first set, and a lot of quintessential mid-90s material in set 2. Not their most jammed out show, but there's no weak point in any of it and it really gives you a sense of what they were about and how solid they were when they had that telepathic energy flowing in full force.

Pauses placed in the right places with pertinent comments like yours are fine, unlike some others I have watched recently that just put in random pauses that break the flow.

Another great react! 7/16/94 and 11/14/95 are a couple of my favorites, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Definitely also check out the one he did at the Beacon just the other week. Kind of a stripped down lounge style version. Unbelievably smooth. Keep the videos coming brother! Peace and love to you.

Stash is one the first Phish songs that got me hooked- 22 years later I'm a total Phish head and it's still in my top five songs. And yes, I do the clap. I love the old in-line stage set up and wish they would return to it. It was one of those cool things that made them unique.

I remember , before they really took off and started playing stadiums, we saw them at a tiny venue called Liznor Auditorium. The crowd was so respectful as Trey asked for complete silence. They proceeded to walk to the front of the stage, all four of them, and, without mics, sang Amazing Grace to us, and we could HEAR them. I mean, what other band can get 5,000 people to be utterly silent. That was a turning point for me....

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that this is the Stash that was included on their first official live album release, "A Live One", a year after this performance... also, those psychedelic backgrounds are Marjorie Minkin originals. Minkin is Mike's mom, and a talented abstract painter... I got my own Minkin original on lucite when I bought Mike's solo album "Inside In" years ago (ordered as a limited special edition bundle through the Doniac Schvice!)

In general, these early to mid 1990's Phish shows are tighter with more aggressive rhythm and soloing by Trey. The bass is a bit less prominent compared to post 1996 where the band began to relax a bit more and allow the music to get more expansive.

It is like a secret. They rip down the fourth wall, and everyone who is lucky enough to have been let in on it, feel almost sorry for those who are unaware. They are raw talent, right in front of you, like close-up magic, and you still can't figure out how the trick is done.

So, I gotta say. I have seen Phish live almost 50 times and that Stash right there absolutely epitomizes what they are about and why people drive 5 hours to see them. It's absolutely transcendent to watch them, seemingly, paint themselves into a corner, and emerge unscathed. I also gotta give you props, Smitty, you seem to have grasped the idea and concept of this song extremely quickly. Yes, the words are actually nonsense, gritty and oddball, and many cannot get past that, and yes, they goof off on stage, while belting out those flawless, nebulas tension and release phrases. Everything they did from "maybe so, maybe not" was improv, so it's different every time you hear it. If you want to hear an exquisite instrumental, thats more structured, try "Divided Sky"...

Man, it's really fun to re-experience the joy of listening to something for the first time. Maybe someone else pointed this out about the band's staging, but here's the history I was told. When Phish started first started, many of the dorm rooms, bars, and fraternity house were so small that Fishman’s drum couldn't fit behind the guitar and piano equipment, so they opted to practice and play in a line. Mike (Bass) and Fish will occasionally switch between extreme stage right. I usually try to sit Page (Keys) side, because it’s fun to say, “Page Side, Rage Side” and if the jam gets too “out there” he is usually holding it down.

Ok, this was exactly half my lifetime ago. Went to school in New Hampshire from 88-92. Phish shows were a way of life. Keene NH had great shows, but their MSG NYE shows are some of the best the decade had to offer. You seem like a real musician, Marvin. First time seeing your vids. Good job. Take a few mushrooms and listen to this shit. The music absolutely makes you see crazy stuff. And, you know, the mushrooms. Chalk Dust Torture, Maze, Sample in a Jar.🤘🤘

You said it, man. Fishman, like any good drummer, knows when to just stay in the pocket or when to really accent the band. I mean, it's so amazing to watch him play, he moves very little for the amount of rhythm thats flying from his core. And thet f***ing hi-hat, always opening and closing, no matter what else he is up to, and, as a drummer myself, I am very aware exactly how hard that is....aaaah!
