He is singing from the perspective of his own childhood during WWII in England. His father was KIA in the Royal Air Force. He grew up with an overbearing mother who, in his mind, helped him to build a psychological WALL around himself to protect him from the outside world. The entire double album is a concept project loosely based around Roger Waters' life. He is singing with the acoustic guitar and headphones.

This is off the Pink Floyd album The Wall, a stunning study of psychological damage .... Loosely based on the first singer Roger's life. His father died in WWII. This resulted in a heartbroken woman struggling to raise a child on her own, and becoming overprotective (in the album/movie) Then with the school system of the time, more issues. The idea being this guy built an emotional wall around himself and then it deals with the issues that created. Became a rock star, failed to vonnect with his wife, shutting off more and more, til he ends up having a psychotic episode, and psychological collapse... It's a whole big story of which this is a small piece

I don’t think it was sarcasm from the mother. I think she was being 100% sincere. She is an overprotective mother who never let her “baby” grow up. Putting her fear into him is making him scared to venture out on his own because of the big scary world that she doesn’t want him to get lost in. She’s definitely going to check out all his girlfriends. And none of them will be good enough for her baby boy. So she’s going to help him build the wall around himself to keep everyone out so he’ll never be hurt….

This album is about factors in a person's life that cause them to recede from the world, the examples of what "bricks" are made of, trauma, fear, social and religious expectations, etc, are both individual and shared experiences, once we realize how isolated we really are, in the end, each of us is responsible for building our own walls, and also for removing, repairing maintaining and protecting those walls as well. As a child we see our bricks as barriers we inherit from others,as a teenager we arrange those bricks to keep us safe, and as adults we realize we were in charge of them the entire time, This album has held my hand all my life. From being a sad frightened kid, to an angry confused young adult, to a heartbroken but determined mother and wife, and now to realizing how much power was handed over to constructs that did not serve me, but I can still learn how to use in my favor, and gratitude for accepting responsibility being the key to mastering ones self. Mastering ones walls, and surviving the lessons so we can potentially hold someone else's hand along the way ❤

"She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing." The child asks questions adults still don't have answers for. The adult then teaches the child consequently the parents reasonings, which become a wall which prevents the child from learning the world for themselves. Parents should guide without teaching hate or fear. Overbearing and protective can produce unpreparedness which begets fear of the unknown. ❤️🔥🍻

The wall, figuratively speaking, is a psychological one. It had pillars or cornerstones. The main character's foundation was rooted deeply in his family, his formal education, his girlfriends and wife, his fans, his struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, and his own imagination.

Understand, this is from a story told in 26 songs on The Wall, a double album. It is about a rock star who builds a psychological wall, separating himself from society. The bricks of the wall be builds are from things in his life. Father killed in war, overbearing mother, abusive teachers, cheating wife, greedy manager. To understand the song, it needs to be taken in the context of the whole album.

I really liked your analysis of the song. By itself, it doesn't really hit like it does on the album. The album, "The Wall", is intended to be heard from beginning to end, as it tells an entire story through different chapters. It's all about a kid who has bad things happen throughout his life. A father who goes off to war, an overprotective mother, the inability to form healthy relationships, descent into drugs and madness, and all along the way, each experience builds a wall in his mind, brick by brick. A wall that encircles him and keeps him from connecting with others. The movie really helps to paint the picture, but the music alone can take you there if you really listen.

All in all, the tour required 700 tons of steel carried by 53 articulated trucks, a crew of 161 people and an initial investment of US$4 million plus US$25 million of running costs just to stage. This tour played to over 5 million people in 68 cities; each concert gathered an average audience of 45,000

The song is part of a long story about how a singer became detached from society. The first side (of four) are largely the traumas that drove his development. The smothering mother is certainly one of them. (The most famous is Another Brick in the Wall part II which deals with the educational system in England at the time). I don't think the mother is being sarcastic at the end. I think having lost her husband in WWII she has just become very controlling as a single mother. I suppose the sarcastic reading is available too. But there is no question this is supposed to depict a bad mother.

You cut the song off too early and missed the last line of the song "Mother, did it need to be so high?" the song is from the Album "the wall" which is a concept album that tells the story of a fictional rock star Pink who builds a psychological wall around himself to protect him from hurt he has felt in his life some of these themes are in part based on Roger Waters singer base player and main lyricist for the band Pink's wall is built in part because the loss of his father died when he was a baby in WW2 his mother brought him up on her own and he hated school Roger's father died at the battle of Angio during the second world war so he never knew him his mother brought him up as a single mother and was quite protective of him but not as bad as the lyrics suggest he hated school you would have to listen to the whole album start to finish to understand the concept of the album

Disheartening is an understatement. The whole album is devastating in a beautiful way. The main reason it's not my favourite Pink Floyd album is that it can be emotionally draining to listen to the whole thing. There are only a handful of full-length 'stand-alone' songs in it, and they don't work as well without the rest. Too many reactors try to understand them on their own without the context of the album or the movie. It never works.

Mama is dead serious. She believes her infantalizing control over son is for the best. Unfortunately, you cut it off before the last line. The son asks “Mama, did it have to be so high?” in reference to the “protective” metaphorical wall she built around him. The wall kept her important while he withered.

I sort of wish you had reacted to the studio version but the live version is great. During their classic period, the four timeless albums from Dark Side of the Moon to The Wall, they were famously obscure and there is no good video footage from that time period. Earlier and later, there is quite a bit. They did film the Wall concert but something happened to the master tapes so the quality isn’t great.

She is just being an overprotective mother, but the reality is that it will wind up instilling fears and worries, and the nightmares come from fearing life instead of living it. The song is about how Mom's overprotective nature is only adding to his beliefs that he should isolate himself behind a wall, Mom's way is just another brick in the wall he is building to protect himself. Hence the closing line. That everyone seems to misconstrue. "Mother, did it need to be so high? (referencing the wall) In other words...did you really need to be this screwed up?

I have so much to say about this song. OMG Roger Waters was raised by the most destructive Mother. What he experienced is known as Mother-Son Enmeshment. It nothing sexual. It's an emotional control by his Mother. He was raised by a covert Narcissist. Look it up. It's sickening. I almost want to cry when I hear this. In fact I have. Because my husband experienced the same thing. My husband is 66. His Momma is 93 and still at it. It's taking its toll on our 42 year-old marriage. But yeah, she's still around doing her manipulating. You ever heard of the term "Momma's Boy"? Yep. This is it. And it's horrid

You cut it off before the last important line. That's a No-No. The song is from a pretty deep concept double album "Pink Floyd The Wall". It is considered by many to be masterpiece. It tells a story, and this is just one page from it. Really needs to be heard in context of the full album for you to do the kind of analysis you're subjecting it to. Long story short, this song is about an overbearing Mother who thinks she's doing good by her child, when actually having the opposite effect.

The main character in the album, voiced in this song by Roger Waters, is going through a mental crisis. He is an unreliable narrator and blames everyone and everything else in his life for his condition. So, of course he has twisted his mother's love, care and affection into justification for his "wall" of isolation. In the narrative of the album this is an early memory where our main character first picks up a guitar, hence, its simple acoustic beginning. The allusion is to "Welcome To The Machine" from the album Wish You Were Here; the line "you bought a guitar to punish your ma." The irony is that he was taking charge of his own life to become a famous rock musician. (If you are unfamiliar with the narrative, that's where the album leads us.) But it is all those pressures of rock 'n' roll life that drove the main character (Pink) in seclusion. Cue up the trajectory of ex-Floyd band mate, Syd Barrett. It is interesting how given the disturbed mental state of the main character, that listening to this song normalizes Pink and accuses the mother of being disturbed when quite clearly Pink is the problem.

Listen to the recorded version that that version there sucks I mean it’s really good on the live album without a doubt, but that recording right there listening to terrible. Now I seen Roger Waters do this concert the whole album in 2010 he actually did a duet with himself what you’re watching was up on the big screen and he sang with himself really cool and those videos out there of him doing that.
