A powerful journey through David's thoughts and dreams, recalling his former friends/bandmates...A journey from sorrow and regret to strength and resolution... Thanks for watching! 🥰

That must be why I get so thoroughly uplifted by the last stanza; the empathetic link to someone who is putting regret and anger behind him and resolutely facing a brighter future. "I thought of you, and the years and all the sadness fell away from me" is not groundbreaking lyric writing, but knowing David and Syd's childhood escapades together, it is beautifully said. Brilliant observation B.

I say that to my wife when she is depressed. I say to her " don't ever lose the light in your 👀 " after the loss of her brother aged 47 last year she has been unable to stop the tears . I love this album so much I must have six CDs and endless downloads on my phone and in car play . 👍

Oh, I remember the first time I heard this song: I was paralysed. The intro found its way right inside my heart. Feelings of dejà-vu nostalgia, couldn´t exactly tell, I wanted more of the song but at the same time I was wishing some parts would last forever, and they did in a way at the "madness part"! What a trip of a song. Sure one of Pink Floyd´s favourites of mine, for sure.

I had no idea this song was about Barret and Waters. This revelation brings a completely different perspective to the song. The animosity between Gilmour and Waters is well documented and it's always been alluded that Gilmour always felt bad for replacing his friend in the very band he was the leader in. This wasn't one of my favourite songs off the album, but this new knowledge has me viewing this song in a new light. Thank you very much for sharing.

I have always thought that the "dream section" reflected Syd's songs of English whimsy - circus clowns, fairgrounds, Lewis Carroll. Interestingly, the string synth plays a melody in 3/4, sounding like a fairground carousel - and the fairground itself perhaps invoking Syd's child-like innocence - but it's in a minor key, lacing the section with sombre sadness. Gilmour's final statement of the song, saying he never thought Syd would lose the light in his eyes, recalls Waters' line in "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" about Syd's eyes being "black holes in the skies". While recollections vary among the band about exactly what happened to Syd and when, the light disappearing from Syd's eyes apparently occurred when he had gone missing for a weekend and came back a different person. "Something's happened to Syd", the band were told. Gilmour remembers how the person looking out of Syd's eyes was no longer Syd (presaging "There's someone in my head, but it's not me" from "Brain Damage") It's assumed he had spent the weekend somewhere ingesting huge quantities of LSD which had literally fried his brain, and the light had gone out of his eyes. Syd never came back. It's a heart-wrenching story, and even to this day the band feel guilty because they think they could have, and should have, done more to help him. I think David Gilmour feels this guilt more than the others, because Syd's condition led to Gilmour's success, as reflected upon in the first two lines of "Poles Apart". There will always be debate about how much of Syd's demise was due to drugs, and how much to mental illness, or if the heavy drug use caused mental illness. I think I'm right in saying that Mason and Gilmour are pretty sure it was all down to LSD, whereas Waters believes it was a mixture of the drugs and mental illness. I guess we'll never know: I'm sure Syd's medical diagnosis will forever be kept secret by his family. Please keep up the fantastic reactions you do. I enjoy them so much. You are extremely perceptive about music, noticing things that many other reactors do not. You also have an extremely relaxing and calm way of presenting your reactions, which truly is much appreciated. Thank you so much. While I am here I would like to recommend Dutch band Focus to you. They were really big in the early seventies in Europe - especially in the UK, where I'm from - but I don't know if they if they ever cracked the US. They were phenomenal musicians, highly original - there was nobody like them - and their music was just so interesting. In particular, I would like to recommend the title track and "La Cathedrale de Strasbourg" from their 1974 album "Hamburger Concerto", although the whole album is wonderful. "Moving Waves" is another classic album. "Sylvia", "House of the King" and the bizarre "Hocus Pocus" were their UK top 20 hits and their most commercial recordings. The rest of their work was beautiful, brilliant, atmospheric prog! I just *know* you will love Focus! All the best.🎉

Hi there! Yes, I had a feeling the dream section was referencing Syd in some way, as is most of the song. What a sad story his ended up being. Thank you so much for those amazing compliments. It's very special to hear that kind of feedback, especially when the inevitable feelings of self doubt creep up, something I think many KZbinrs face from time to time... Much peace and blessings to ya! ☺

I have used the same "Through the Looking Glass" comparison for that wonderful breakdown that evokes, however reservedly, their early sonic experimentation days. I hear less whimsy and more foreboding, having dubbed it Syd's Wicked Circus. Great commentary!

Cluster one, Marooned, a great day fot freedom (live in Gdansk ),Coming back to life (Pompeii), high hopes (Gdansk ) and poles apart are diamonds... Cluster one is maybe my most played Floyd song, followed by echoes and marooned, set the Controls, grantchester meadows and narrow way: all so chilling Poles apart I listen to when meditating over friendship, change and loss: medicine

This one is dear to me. It tends to get a little overlooked, perhaps because on first blush it just seems like a...hate to use this term in relation to Floyd..."normal", uncomplicated rock ballad with a fairly boilerplate Gilmour solo, but I have to say this song stuck out to me on first listen among all the greats of tDB as just wonderfully alluring in every way. Melodically of course because Gilmour can't create a bad melody to save his life, but also thematically and atmospherically. It resonated it's meaning on an emotional level so clearly that I "understood" what the song was about, even before knowing the Syd and Roger backstories. And like you pointed out, SO many layers if you listen close. Glad you got to this one, great episode! :-)

@@retroreactions.... I am excited for you to get the full, uninterrupted album experience once you've wrapped up the episodes. As you astutely noted, all the songs crossfade beautifully and the whole "miscommunication" concept is very consistent across the whole project, so I argue that it's as satisfying an album experience as their legendary 70's output. For proof, when my gf and I are hanging out listening to music, she has imposed the unbreakable rule that once Division Bell starts, it finishes lol Great weekend to you as well & as always!

I've always hated that 'dream' section given the noises they have been able to do in other songs elsewhere, and thought they could have daily dropped that and lengthened the ending for a more melodious song... Well never mind it'll never happen. Such a great song. The ending guitar work so SO good!!!! Thank you for playing one of my favs from them.
