From what i gathered i think during most of the song he is speaking to his son, teaching his son. Then during the chorus he is speaking to his baby mama & their relationship how she takes the kid away from him.

In the 90s this was considered “alternative rock” … this song is too soft for the hard rock and yet it gave a bit of alternative style. This band is also from Kansas City, MO. My hometown. One of my favorites!

It was called grunge music in the '90s grunge is just a slower version of New Wave music / punk music all of that was called alternative music especially getting into the 2000s.

I thought grunge music was the very best there ever was, and still do. There were a lot of bands that came during that same time which wound be alternate such as Green Day ( a fabulous punk style too) thank you for catching my mistake. Not quite positive, but the story behind this song is with the court hearing on the lead vocalist addiction struggle, which basically led to his son being in custody with someone else but this was all like the brink of their uprising so alot was going on but it's all cool cause in the end he got his son back
