I always thought it was a song about the end of a relationship. As in, losing the "religion" that a couple establishes as their relationship of "them". If that makes sense. Hello from the deepest south.

Omg this song! I was born in ‘85. Back in the day, we used to have the alarm clocks that woke us up to the radio. I used to always want to sleep with my mom. I remember being in like 2nd grade waking up to this song. And I really liked it. I free up listening to hip hop and r and b but I really like this song.

He’s talking about falling into addiction because of the pressures of life, fame, etc. and the struggle of recovery, that’s what the slip is about . R.E.M. stands for “Rapid Eye Movement” the phase of deep sleep when we dream.

Losing My Religion, released as the first single from the R.E.M.’s 1991 album Out of Time is definitely a remarkable song. With its beautiful, and rather surreal music video, it listed 4th on The Billboard Hot 100, was nominated for several Grammy Awards from which won two, and was constantly spun on the MTV. The music video was directed by an Indian director - Trasem Singh, who admitted that it was modeled after the Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings in which an angel crashes into a town and the villagers have varied reactions to him. The clip has a moody art house feeling to it, and was created in a style of a type of Indian filmmaking, where according to Stipe everything would be “melodramatic and very dreamlike”. The video was also based on the inspirations drawn from an Italian painter Caravaggio, as the scenes from the clip strongly resemble the style of the painter’s work, and filled with religious motives and tableaux, or, so called “living images” portraying Indian deities. Many controversies occurred with the song’s questioning of faith, however unlike it may seem, it actually is about unrequited love. The phrase “losing my religion” is an expression from the southern region of the US, that means “at my wit’s end,” meaning as if things were going so bad you could lose your faith in God

Man I love your journey into the world of rock n roll. Might interest you to know that the lead singer of REM was/is gay, and REM were big at a time where that was very much criticised and frowned upon so his songs have a lot of hidden meaning to them. He only came out as being gay very late in their career. Makes your comment so much more relevant when you say rock has way more meaning than just guitars, drums, and shouting. Rock n metal is awesome!!!!!

A friend told me a funny story. He was always a country music fan. But while stationed in Georgia, his friends would take him out to this nightclub where rock bands would play. Including REM. Now normally a band as big as REM wouldn't be caught dead at such a place. But REM got their start there. And really liked the owner. But my friend had no idea who they were. And he remarked at one point "I bet this band might be big someday. They are really good!" Somebody had to tell him he was listening to a Top 40 band already.

Basically he’s watching someone he loves suffer depression to a severe degree and doesn’t know if he’s doing too much or too little. And loses faith both in himself and his God because of it. And every time he thinks it’s getting better, truth is it doesn’t. And the spiral begins again.
@RuffledOnTime2 жыл бұрын
Actually it's more of an unrequited love and obsession song. The term "losing my religion" is another way of saying "losing my temper" or "losing my composure" expressing frustration with himself and the woman he's pining over.

@@Deemonaalot Stipe has repeatedly stated that the song's lyrics are not about religion. The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate."[11] Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression.[12] He told Q that "Losing My Religion" is about "someone who pines for someone else. It's unrequited love, what have you."[13] Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" (1983) by The Police, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me.'" From The Wikipedia page.
