I’m being real. I stayed up all night watching reactions to this song, and yours is definitely my favorite. I’m glad to see someone actually hearing what is being said. I love this song so much and as a man I nearly cry when I hear it. The preacher witnessed to the hooker. She read the word of Jesus to her son, and turned her life around. She never would’ve gotten a cross if she would’ve kept looking for lost souls to lay with. The preacher helped save her own lost soul. Fast forward and what she ultimately leaves behind is a son who knows the love of Christ, and will continue to spread the word. This song is all about grace and how the love of god can change your entire life. It’s definitely a tear jerker, but it’s such a beautiful story. The legacy of the mother and the legacy of Christ. Beautiful.

This is a great song. I don't really listen to country because so much of it is just manufactured stadium country, but old, real country is what I grew up on. I am a metal head now but old country will always have a place in my heart.

The timbre of his rich baritone voice is unparalleled. My favorite Randy Travis songs are Reasons I Cheat; Promises; Take Another Swing At Me; This is Me; Look Heart, No Hands; Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man; That’s Where I Draw the Line; I Told You So; The Box; He Walked On Water; Three Wooden Crosses; Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart; It’s Just a Matter of Time; On the Other Hand; and Forever and Ever Amen.

You are spot on, Not many people get the ending. Randy suffered a major strock years ago n wasn't expected to live but his wife talked to him everyday while he was in a coma on a respirator. They said may not recover n may want to think about taking him off of life support, well she held Randy's hand n when she spoke to him to understand if he wanted to go or fight n he wanted to fight. He has been recovering at home for over 3 yes n his voice is coming back but will never be the same but they had him sing part of one of his favorite songs Amen, Amen ( not sure if right tittle but I know this word was in the title

Wow, you called it even before he got to the Ah-ha! moment. It's funny how we interpret things. I remember thinking it was the preacher saying a prayer for the dying hooker, whispering can't you see the promised land to her as SHE crossed over. It made sense that in all that carnage his Bible would have blood on it. But nope I had it wrong, obviously, haha. And it's funny, I remember when I heard it, too, that I was thinking I guess the driver doesn't count, lol, well, he got them all killed by not seeing the stop sign!

Nice reaction. The " Hooker " was the survivor and went on to change her life and have a son who became a preacher as well. As for the driver ; even though I haven't been able to find out - but one of those 4 were the driver _ so that's why there was only 3 wooden crosses and not 4.

You are correct. The hooker survived because she had nothing worthwhile to leave behind yet... until her son the preacher. Randy has some great tunes. 'Forever & ever, amen' is a huge hit & I love it, but I love 'He walked on water' & 'On the other hand' even more, for some reason.

This is a common mistake I see in reactions to this song - "What about the bus driver?" "What about the driver of the 18-wheeler?" "Was there anyone else on the bus? What happened to them?" "Were there any other vehicles involved?" But this is a story about four people. There could have been 57 other people on the bus, but this isn't about everyone who might possibly have been there. It's about the impact of this event on four specific people and the legacy that those specific people left.

The reason why there's only 3 wooden crosses ; can be gotten in the part of the song when he sings about what you leave behind. The farmer leaves his land and love of farming in his young son's heart. Wooden Cross #-1 : Next The Teacher leaves behind her wisdom in the young students to give them a better start. Wooden Cross #-2 : Next the Preacher whisper's can't you see the promise land as he layed his blood stained bible in the Hooker's hand. Wooden Crross #-3. Then there's no mention of what the hooker has left behind yet ; so you could deduce that the Hooker lived. Which we she did and goes on to have a son who goes on to become a preacher himself because his mother ( the Hooker ) read the bloodstained bible that was given to her by the first preacher.

No cross for the bus driver, because they either survived , or nobody wanted to put one up for the idiot that got three people killed! I'll write a verse for the bus driver, just to help out. That driver left three corpses, trapped inside the wreckage! A mangled bus and eighteen wheeler, laying in the road! It's not what you take, when your blind ass can't see road signs! It's what you leave behind you when you go!
