Thank you for listening to Eva's version. For my ears it is the best. I just cannot imagine anyone doing a better version of this song. It will stay with you forever. Hopefully you will listen to more of her songs - Fields of Gold would be great

My favorite version of the song, so bluesy, so jazzy, so forlorn. There was a quote by somebody, and I don't remember who, that went something like... when Judy Garland sang it, it was about OZ, when Eve Cassidy sang it, it was about Heaven.

I was listening to the radio over here in the UK when UK radio DJ Terry Wogan played 3 songs by the then unknown Eva Cassidy over 3 days, this one being the middle one which caused the telephone lines to blow up and broke her to the rest of the world after she had already died. Since then every bit of her ouput has been released, often for the first time and not a bad one among them. I've been a fan ever since and have evey one of those released songs. I'd like to recommend one of her songs which is hardly ever reacted to. It's called "Blues in the Night" and It's been one of my favourite songs since long before Eva covered it and hers is my favourite version. Many of her songs have that ethereal delivery that we heard here but Blues in the Night shows a different side to her voice and just how wide her range is. If you should listen to it, remember that every voice you hear in it is hers, including the 'harmonica' outro.

Eva passed away just 10 months after this performance recorded at Blues Alley, DC area, early January 1996. She was discovered only 5 years later in UK when this song was played on the BBC. It was a tsunami: records were printed and 10+ millions of these were sold in the very next years. She was a real gem, stunning in different genres: ballads, jazz, blues, gospel, … Her covers arrangements were oure genius: Sting said she sang Fields of Gold as he would have loved to sing it. Check also her covers of Autumn Leaves, Night ird, Stormy Monday, Imagine, What a wonderful world, Time after Time, …

If I was cast away on a desert island and told I could only take the songs of one artist with me it would be Eva. I never tire of her interpretations. Another song you should listen/react to is "Fields of Gold". Sting himself said her version is how the song was meant to be sung.

I would suggest/request the tribute version by Lucy Thomas of the UK , she sang Evas version as a tribute and IF you and other think her version was great, you ain't heard anything untill you hear Lucy's version, she crushed that song !!!! thanks !!!

I firmly believe that if Judy Garland herself heard Eva's version of her iconic song, she'd be blown away by it too, as much as I am. Just beautiful. RIP Eva, you left us with an amazing musical legacy and God bless you for that.

Seeing how much you appreciated, how Eva was able to take it and make it her own, you have to check out native Hawaiian, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version. He too, like Eva, was able to really make the song his own, unfortunately, that's not the only thing they have in common. They also, both passed away and were taken far too soon, RIP to both, the world is made all the lesser, in their absence!
