Two hints you missed. At the beginning, she tells the reporter her fiancé had seen that evil woman, too. Then when Raymond was creepin' through the backwoods, quiet as a mouse, he missed the tracks too small for Andy to make. It's a great song and I like Reba's song as much as the Vicki Lawrence version. Fine storytelling, indeed!

Why is it that every reactor always goes for this version before the original one? Vicki Lawrence from “The Carol Burnett Show” and “Mama’s Family” was the original artist to do this song, and, props to Reba, Vicki’s version will always and forever be the best, the definitive one.

This was a #1 smash hit for Vicki Lawrence ("The Carol Burnett Show" & "Mama's Family" - which started as skits on "TCBS" called "The Family") for 2 weeks in 1973. The story is the her brother was convicted and hung for a double murder he didn't commit and he didn't know his baby sister had done it by the lyrics (they hung my brother before I could say the tracks he saw while on his way to Andy's house and back that night were mine). Her brother's wife was cheating with Andy (to tell you truth, I've been with her myself). She admits to the double murder in the last verse (and his cheating wife had never left town that's one body that will never been found you see your little sister don't miss when she aims her gun). For Reba, the song broke her Billboard Hot Country Singles top 10 hit streak. Her previous TWENTY-FOUR singles had done that before this as it only peaked at #12 on that chart.

It’s a lot easier to pick up the story without all of the talking. Vicki Lawrence (Carol Burnett Show) sang this first. It was written by her husband in 1972. Vicki’s version was played on non-country stations, or considered a cross-over. I’m not sure when Reba’s version came out. You got the gist of the story-little sister found out about sister-in-law cheating, killed her, and hid the body. Probably started the rumor that the wife left town. Then sister goes out to take care of brother’s friend who had participated in the cheating. Brother goes home to get his gun to take care of Andy himself, discovers him already dead, fires a shot in the air to attract attention to get help, and is arrested and hung for a crime he didn’t commit.

Andy was the one that got Sh*t. Raymond stopped for a drink on the way home and Andy told him your wife is sleeping around and I've been with her. Raymond goes home and gets his gun on his way to Andy's house, he finds his sister there and she's already killed Andy and Raymond's wife. He tells her to "get out of here" and fires off a shot to attract the police that were driving by. The judge didn't want to hear the truth because he'd been sleeping wioth her too so he just said guilty and sentenced him to hang. As much as I absolutely LOVE this video, but it is a little hard if you're listening to the song for the first time. It's more of a supplement for those that already know the song. These music videos that are like mini-movies is how people saw that Reba could act as well as sing and led to her movie roles.

Hey bud-so I'm a huge fan of the song, but I've not heard Miss Reba's version. (Not a country fan, but I did see a lot of her TV show and that was pretty good.) As for this one, this one suffers from "too many cooks spoil the Vichyssoise. " There's no need for all that supercilious yap, especially over the lyrics which are quite straightforward. That nonsense started in the 80s when Pat Benatar was the first to have speaking over the song and while it's annoying, I suppose I can put up with it, but I hear a lot of young people, esp. with Tool videos, that they "can't" concentrate on the song with a video playing. ??? Talk about a one-track mind. Like other commentors, I highly recommend you listen to the original, non-country Vicki Lawrence version. It's not nearly so difficult to follow. Love your channel!

I don’t know why people keep choosing this cover instead of the original by Vickie Lawrence. I like Reba but not so much on this remake. All the talking inserted takes away from the song. The original is much better. He was originally told his wife was sleeping with a black guy and his freind had slept with her also. He got blamed for the murder, he didn’t take the fall for his sister, he didn’t know who killed him. Since he flagged down the police they just did a fast trial to blame someone and make it look like they did their job without any investigation.
