Fun fact: it's also kind of an anthem for Germans, too. Actually it became tradition on the Oktoberfest and at many other folk festivals in Germany that the festival ends with Angels. On the last evening, at closing time. When everything is finished for the year. Then the band or the DJ in the marquee plays Robby Williams Angels at the end and the crowd sings along. You can also find lots of videos here. Just search for "Oktoberfest last song Angels" Here is an example kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4vapIF7iN5jotEsi=fpZNo8TP2HTNd0jZ

He never broke america but the rest of the world knows him. That performance is from his concert at Knebworth, England. I've seen him live twice as a solo artist, probably the best natural performer of my generation. That song, Angels is what started his solo career after leaving Take That. If you're gonna do more Robbie, always pick live performances.

Rob is a legend! 18 Brit awards and at (this) Knebworth he had a record-breaking crowd of 375,000 fans. A few years later he performed live at Leeds ... twice the size of the crowd and millions watching/listening as it was broadcastes live though all european tv- and radio-stations. He is a legend and you can't go wrong with Rob! Great entertainer - maybe (or for sure) the best one around at this time! ♥

Somehow, most UK musicians, singers, bands, are known worldwide except for USA. In your country, still are people who doesn't know who is Adele, never listened to Culture Club, Eurythmics or The Verve. Robbie came out off Take That (they have a lot wonderful songs till today), and among his collaborators were Nicole Kidman (¨Somethin' Stupid¨ cover from 2002) and Kylie Minogue (¨Kids¨, 2000). In 2018 Taylor Swift had him as a guest at her London concert to sing ¨Angels¨.

Robbie Williams was one of the greatest superstars worldwide for decades, apart from the US, where he lives. I have no idea why. He was a founding member if the first boy band ever, Take That, and then started on his own. Angels, about the death of his grandmother, who had a large part in raising him, was his first solo success.
@KathyD-24601

Angels isn’t about the death of his grandmother either - she was still alive when it was written! It’s officially about the idea that departed loved ones watch over you, but given that Rob was raised Catholic, I think it’s really about faith.

Gary Barlow once said of Robbie Williams something like: "I don't begrudge Robbie for what he's done as a solo artist because it really has been astounding. As a fellow musician I can only heap praise on to what he's managed to achieve on his own because to sell as many records as he has and put out as many albums he has is nothing short of phenomenal. I'm not an envious person because I truly believe you get what you deserve in this life. So I have never sat there and wished I was Robbie Williams but I sometimes wish I would of had the career and he's had."

Robbie's concert in Knebworth 2003 (which this is from) was the second largest consert in the history in the UK, with 370 000 people over three days. He has been killing it sicne the 90's but this is, to this day, the best show he has ever done. He had a lot of issued with drugs in his youth and it was touch and go if he would ever come back as a performer, but, as you can see here, he made one hell of a comeback. You should react to She's the One, also from Knebworth, and Come Undone, but also 'Let me entertain you', Rock DJ and Millenium. It's like you said, this man was born for this, and he is still going strong, to this day!

For anyone interested, there is controversy around who wrote this song. Robbie claimed he did, but a song writer from Dublin named Ray Heffernan has legal documents to prove he signed over the rights of the song to Robbie for £7500 ($10,000). It then was recorded for Robbie's debut album, which propelled him into superstar status.
@KathyD-24601
@KathyD-24601 9 ай бұрын
*sigh* I wish people wouldn’t keep spreading misinformation about this. Robbie came up for the idea for Angels and the first verse words and melody before meeting Ray. The song Ray and Robbie Co-wrote when Robbie found out Ray writes songs and can play music was a precursor to Angels, it has a totally different structure, many extra verses, and no chorus. Robbie abandoned it because it didn’t work. When he met Guy Chambers he started from scratch with his first verse melody and lyrics. Ray lodged a copyright claim without having heard Angels. He had a rough recording of the song he had co-written, which his lawyer provided. His lawyer received a copy of the final version of Angels in return so the two versions could be compared. They were very obviously substantially different. So Ray’s lawyer negotiated a small financial settlement and an acknowledgement, to compensate him for his ‘creative input’ into the process. Robbie and Guy retained their songwriting credits. It is simply not true to state that the song in this video was written by Ray Heffernan.

@@KathyD-24601 song structure different, but lyrically almost identical if you've heard the earliest recording with Ray.
@KathyD-24601
@KathyD-24601 9 ай бұрын
@@Steven-ex3ne I have heard it, and no it’s not lyrically ‘almost identical’ throughout the song. The first verse - the bit Robbie already had - is identical, the rest of it floats around some similar-ish ideas and has the odd line the same but in different places and functioning in different ways. You are just overlooking all the bits that are different because of the impact of the opening verse, and because you want to believe the poor Irish songwriter over the pop star. And in any case, the key there is that it was CO-written, and Robbie is primarily a lyric and top-line writer who needs a musician to write the music to go with his lyrics and melody. That has been absolutely consistent throughout his career and is attested to by everyone he has worked with. Given that it is incredibly unlikely that Robbie’s collaboration with Ray that night was any different to his other collaborations over the past 26 years, the likelihood is that *Robbie* wrote those lyrics, and are his first draft ideas of what ended up as ‘Angels’. This is not even getting into the fact that Ray’s story has morphed and changed over the years depending on who he is talking to, and that the version of the story popularised in the late 90s is very different to the version he tells today. I’ve seen him directly tell people on here that it was negotiated he would get a songwriting credit, and suggest that he will take legal action if he can find a lawyer to take the case, but the actual letter he showed a news crew back in the 90s (which you can read if you are very quick on the pause button) says clearly that he will get the acknowledgment that appears, NOT a credit. Ray has been exploiting his very minimal input for years. His lawyer even used it in court to try and get a reduced sentence for a DUI offence. And people seemingly keep falling for it.
