I'm Gen X (born late 70s). This was our teen music. I remember seeing Nirvana in the PNW sometime in '91-ish. Several other Seattle bands were on the bill. Every one of them great performers and accessible to their music fans. What a time to be young!

Fun facts about the video : Two days before the shoot, the band handed out flyers asking fans to appear in the video, while the LA radio station KXLU also made an on-air announcement call-out for extras. The band’s flyer read: “Nirvana needs YOU… You should be 18 to 25 years old and adopt a high-school persona, ie preppy, punk, nerd, jock. The cheerleaders were girls recruited from local strip clubs.

crazy fact. my brother was 18 at the time of this snd he was gonna go. was signed up and everything but the day of shooting he couldn't get a ride. lol years later he ran into kurt cobain during his between albums when kurt lived in LA for he was walking into a liquor store and kurt was walking out with a lil bag. during his purple hair era. he stayed in an apartment nearby.

One band, one song, changed the world. Then they followed it up with several more, and their MTV Unplugged concert is one of the best of all time.

It’s the genre which pretty much defined my high school years. We didn’t know what hit us because it was so different. Check out the drummer, Dave Grohl’s band Foo Fighters. “The Pretender” is a good one to start with.

Being an original old-school Nirvana fan, and them being my favorite band, I enjoyed seeing the younger generation becoming keen to such sick music!! I also loved how the one dude knew a bit about Kurt, and Nirvana! I'll definitely watch more here if you do more Nirvana, and you should do some of their live videos too. Korn, System of a Down, and Slipknot are a few phenomenal bands, if you haven't already checked them out, you should!! It will be worth it! That is also why I subscribed just now, the same reasons! Their music has inspired me over the decades and has seeped into my music a bit here and there, I even added bass and drums (played by me with real instruments) to an unreleased Nirvana song - it is on my YT channel. (The song is called "What more can I say?" ----->> kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYvTp4GXpsuGsNk It has Kurt's vocals and guitar. It was added into an album Nirvana released in an alternate reality in the 2000s here on YT too! lol But they messed up the EQ and it sounds better on my upload. I plan to re-record the drums at the very least soonish as I am not happy with them these days, I am far better at drumming now than back then! I think my bass playing is still okay in this song though.

Lived in Seattle in 1980 and 90s. It was an incredible music scene with so many talented musicians forming bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and so many others. Could see the bands for $6 and it made it fun going from band to band in one night. You got to see these beautiful men walking around the city during the day. Crazy time and loved it.

I was at a HS weekend party in 1991. Nirvanas “ In Bloom” was playing on the radio. The room fell silent. We all bobbed our heads and tapped our feet. At the end of the song. One guy stands up and said.”Holy shit!” It was magical. A few weeks later. Everyone was wearing flannel and gone were the neon color shirts and 80s hair band hair. The music spoke to us kids who had boomer parents who gave us the keys to the house and were at work all of time. We hated our parents and would rebelled in anger..

YES!! Finally some grunge for the GenXers!! This song and grunge saved rock and roll! Grunge was a sub-genre of alternative. The typical "grunge" song was driven by heavy instrument distortion and angst-filled lyrics that a lot of us young folks were drawn to. As I've posted before, to completely understand the impact grunge had on Gen X, you have to understand the prior decade, the 80's. Most of us had parents who were busy climbing up the corporate ladder or we had one parent struggling to make ends meet! Either way we were alone a lot. The music was horrible in my opinion, a lot of one-hit wonders, pop princesses, and dudes in bright spandex, eyeliner and big, over-processed hair. The lyrics were empty and my friends and I couldn't relate to them. When grunge made it's way to the midwest, most of us became grunge. It became a "look" and we were all the way in! Finally, there were lyrics that spoke to us! A group of young midwest GenX misfits finally found their place. It's sad that most of the "grunge" OGs are gone! I miss that era the most! It was a magical time to be young! Andrew Wood - RIP Kurt Cobain - RIP Layne Staley - RIP Chris Cornell - RIP Scott Weiland - RIP I have to mention Chester-RIP - he came later but he spoke to my soul! The thing is, music that you would have related to had been available the entire time. Grunge really just marked the time when it was presented in a way that it could be profitable. There were plenty of 'misfit kids' in the 80s listening to Husker Du, Sonic Youth, the Melvins, etc. REM had had 80s success but was more of a jangle pop band than a rock band. Kurt was influenced by these bands but also the Beatles. When he put the two influenced together it exploded. I bet that dude in the back who said he couldn't relate with the Beatles would groove hard on some later harder stuff like Revolution and Helter Skelter. It really isn't far to go from songs like those and Smells like Teen Spirit. Kurt was even self-conscious that Teen Spirit sounded like a punk version of More than a Feeling by Boston and no one was ever more arena rock than Boston was.

Thats an oversimplification and factually untrue. While there is no doubt Nirvana and the grunge movement helped surplant hair metal it was not the only factor and it certainly wasn't overnight. Nevermind was released in September of 1991. On March 31st, 1992 Def Leppard released Adrenalize. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for 5 weeks and spent 65 weeks on the chart. Poison had hit records in 1991-1993, Bon Jovi in 1992 and bands/singers like Aerosmith, Kiss, Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne adopted hair metal styles and lasted well into the 90s. While grunge helped and Nirvana launched grunge it was only one factor in the changing of the guard in music.

Nirvana changed music almost overnight. High School was different after Kurt Cobain changed rock music. Everyone was completely blown away by the grunge movement. We had Pac and Nirvana both putting out new albums at the same time and it was not anything like white people bought Nirvana and black people bought Pac. Everybody bought both. We use to stay up to watch Yo Mtv Raps and MTV Rocks all to watch Pac, Snoops "What's My Name" and Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and then Kurt Cobain died and a year and half later, Pac died, Brad from Sublime died, Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon died and Biggie died and for awhile music died, only songs on the radio were from artists that died until Dr. Dre revived rap and alternative metal revived rock music. Literally the best of times followed by the worst of times into it was resurrected by Lincoln Park, Limp Bizkit, Bone Thugs, Green Day, i wish everyone could have experienced that time. Political Correctness was mocked, bullying was a right of passage, girls were down to chil but werent thots and there was no gender confusion or weird stuff like that. Goth and Emos were a transient fad that went away.... I miss those rebellious times when nobody was afraid to flip a bird to the system

Of course people were more drawn to the music of their culture but I've been to countless rock shows and have seen every race of people in the pit. Obviously rap concerts were packed with every culture. Im not sure why more white people liked rap compared to black people liking rock and i don't really care but i love seeing black reactors discovering the type of rock that was special and spawned a bunch of knock off generic copy cats. How many bands can you think of that sound like Green Day?? Probably a lot. How many sound like Nirvana? None.. Lol. Literally zero. Even if a band uses similar chords and method of song creation, they can mimic Nirvana, just like nobody can imitate Pac. Artists are special when they can't be imitated and only emulated. But you're point is solid. Everybody had something for them and many musicians combined elements of differing styles. Sublime is a perfect amalgamation of regge, rock, hip-hop, and punk brought together with soul and passion. Blind Melon was the same way. They used to figure out how to cool as hell stuff with musicians, and now it's all synthesized and sampled and lazy to an extent. Music use to bring people together from all cultures and now artist can get cancelled for "appropriating" styles of music they genuinely love and that's sad man. It's gonna stop people from being creative unless they have balls to not care, lol. I guess the credo for an artist really is "Give Zero Fucks"

@@451mn3 no, i would include Eminem but i guess i was saying that he played a pivotal role in keeping music alive, along with artists ranging from Outcast to Master P and all the music in between that were household names. I am not at all saying Eminem single handedly saved rap in any way at all. Dre was able to adapt and continue making flame beats and still is. From before NWA to today, he's stayed relevant and had been the mastermind behind so many artists. Im not gonna start naming them off. But i will admit that Dre taking Eminem under his wing was a sign of genius. He could hear the potential and forsee the controversy and popularity it would bring. And Dre and Eminem creating what they did is probably the greatest example of how detrimental racism has been and continues to be. A black man and a white man became brothers because their love for music was stronger then the fear of being mocked or ridiculed for collaborating. Real artists have to give zero fucks to create their best art. Beethoven created his 4th movement of his 9th symphony The Ode to Joy after going completely deaf and was depressed and broke and literally robbed of the one thing most important concerning music.... hearing it. The papers he read kept saying things like "The End of an Era" "Beethoven is no more" "Beethoven Forced to Pass the Torch to the New Geniuses of Composing Music" I remember seeing so many things like that and what he did is in my opinion the most amazing act of defiance. He sat down knowing people were laughing at him for announcing a new symphony and he arguably created the most beautiful piece music that exist and he did it as a big middle finger to everyone who gave up on him and moved on to other composers. When the 9th Symphony debuted, just as the last 5 minutes were starting, Beethoven emerged from behind the curtains as another conductor obviously had to conduct the performance. He looked like an unkempt mad man and grabbed the baton and started violently waving and lashing it thru the air and gesticulating and releasing all the anger and rage and resentment he had toward those who doubted him. The first chair violinist had to tap him on the shoulder as it had ended but Beethoven was lost in his own mind. The violinist turned him around and sadly he couldn't hear it but he could see the packed venue all on their feet waving their coats and throwing flowers on the stage. He received 5 15 minute standing ovations. It was customary at the time for royalty to only receive 3 that were forced. Police had to start forcing people out but many refused and were arrested. Beethoven watched them but he never bowed. I like to think he quietly said to himself "Fuck all of you for doubting me! Im Beethoven and you're all nobody and the world will forget you and i will live forever" or something like that. But an hour and fifteen minute standing ovation for a piece of music written while deaf to tell the world that he can do what he did without being able to hear. That Ode to Joy movement is what music is all about to me.. Enjoing music with other people..... Sorry about the long ass comment. Im bored at work

Hey saxophone was rock in the 70s and 80s - whatever you pick up, learning an instrument will definitely change your life and the way you think. They've shown it rewires the brain in a lot of positive ways, so start a band and just have fun with it - you guys have one huge journey ahead of you with rock, and I can't wait to witness it, this is the stuff that made me who I am, from The Doors to Nirvana and Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin and a thousand more, like every bit of guitar from 1965 - 2000 (I was listening to my father's old record albums as a kid, and was 3 when MTV went on the air). I LOVE seeing people discover Nirvana for the first time. I remember hearing them by seeing the premiere of this video on MTV when they released Nevermind in the early 90s and it changed my life. Seeing people get turned on to their songs 30+ years later for the first time is so satisfying.

I grew up in the 90's, Nirvana blew up when I was in elementary school and they got heavy play on Mtv back when they were still playing videos. Nirvana is legendary, and their drummer has a spinoff band, Foo Fighters y'all should react to. Both catalogs are deep!

They changed the game. Rock music was the 80's hair bands (Def Leopard, Poison, Guns N Roses, etc.) and Nirvana ended ALL of that. Grunge music was the fad immediately when this song came out. Seattle became the epicenter of grunge since so many bands came out of the Seattle area - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and others.

The Song "Something in the Way" used in The Batman is also Nirvana :) Nirvana is one of the G.O.A.Ts and is responsible for introducing me to other music genres besides r&b and hip hop. No Doubt was another favorite group of mine during this era. I LOVED growing up in the 90s!!
