I doubt you would ever find that actual quote anywhere. Exactly the same quote has been attributed to Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra, BB King and probably a dozen other musicians in describing others, but never verified. That being said, it is certainly true that many times Elvis did express a love and respect for Roy's talent. He did actually say publicly that Roy had the "most perfect voice in the world" and, during a Las Vegas concert, that Roy was "the greatest singer in the world".

@ptournas2 ай бұрын
@@baskervillebee6097 It certainly was! I read an interview with Fred Foster, who produced his first number 1 hit, "Running Scared", in 1961. Not having the recording technology of today, he was having a problem when Roy sang the last note of the song in falsetto. He tried several times but couldn't get it loud enough to be heard well over the instruments. Roy was getting frustrated. Fred had him face the wall opposite the musicians, but Roy , who said later he was getting embarrassed by it, decided to just belt it out with his chest voice and Fred said he and everyone in the studio were stunned when they heard him hit that high note with so much power and without using falsetto!

Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy was known for performing while standing motionless & wearing black clothes to match his dyed black hair & dark sunglasses. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Oh, Pretty Woman", "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Leah" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the rock supergroup "Traveling Wilburys" with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. Check our In Dreams, Uptown, Pretty Woman (that’s one you’ve probably heard), two of his later ones Windsurfer and California Blue. Blue Bayou which also was a hit later on for Linda Rondstat. This song was also a hit later on for K D Lang. In Dreams was also used in a bizarre way in the David Lynch movie Blue Velvet.

Rock and Roll was birthed in the fifties. My brother was born in 1956, and there is a photo of him, at age three, singing Elvis’ “Hound Dog” with his little plastic guitar. Roy Orbison was one of the pioneers of rock. At some point you need to check the super group, The Traveling Willburys, of which Roy was a part of until his death. His voice was already in some of an upcoming album so I guess you could say he was part of the group even posthumously.

Elvis did say that Roy Orbison is the guy that he didn't want to perform after and loved Roy's voice. Roy is so iconic and perhaps one of the most important male singers in music. One of the first singers to really sing at that high range and even wrote and sung songs of heartbreak and sadness/feelings from a male perspective and making it main stream. I love "I Drove All Night," "Blue Bayou," "Blue Angel," "Only the Lonely," and his classic "In Dreams." Roy didn't make a single bad song!

YES, YES, YES! Thank you, Steven! I love Roy Orbison's music! His voice has been compared to Elvis' voice (and vice versa) many times over the years. Yes...they are similar in some ways. No...they never did actually record anything together, or even actually meet (though there are rumors all over the place, that they did...all of which have ultimately been struck down). They WERE "doing" music in overlapping time periods, and their ways of singing were at least somewhat similar. I have loved them both, since hearing each of them (a LOT)...separately. My little 60s band did many of both Roy's and Elvis' songs, so most of them are still living inside of me. This is one of them. Whenever I've heard it, I've jumped right right in to sing along (and these days, I can do it successfully again...Whee!!!). 😀 In the song, there definitely are a few bits that sound like Elvis could have been singing it, but he did NOT sing it. Obviously, if he had, he would have sounded at least a bit like Roy. The song WAS offered to him, BEFORE Roy (who wrote it) recorded it himself, but Elvis refused it, because he considered Roy's voice and techniques to be "the best, and he didn't want to ""horn in" on that. Elvis came on the music scene in the 1950s, and I listened to EVERYTHING he sang during those years, and onward until he passed away (on August 16, 1977...just over 47 years ago, now), on the radio, and I also purchased (or was gifted) every single recording he ever made. Roy also came on the scene in the 1950s, and I listened to everything HE sang during those years and onward until he passed away (on December 6, 1988...not quite 36 years ago, now), as well (including this one), on the radio. PLUS I did get to see both Roy and Elvis on TV, from the mid 70s onward (obviously never LIVE), when I was living in Anchorage and other Alaskan towns (Valdez still didn't have TV back then). Personally, I would never say one was better than the other, though there always seem to be people fighting over that standard. Yes...they were definitely similar in some ways, but they highly respected each other very much, and didn't cross over each other's lines. There are still people who think they DID, but from everything I've ever heard or seen, it's simply not true. Again...THANK YOU for your great reaction! 😀 There is ONE version of the song on KZbin that I like, other than this live one. It's on Roy's own channel, and it's title is... Roy Orbison - Crying with k.d. lang Also, K.D. Lang did a solo of it at one point, as well. So did Glen Campbell, shortly before he passed away. They were both good, but I much prefer just listening to Roy sing it. 😀 On the OTHER hand...I would LOVE to hear Dan Vasc sing it, because he definitely COULD, and VERY well. However...I doubt that he ever will, because it's a rather sad ballad, and he's only done a VERY few of those, and has said (quite recently) that he probably won't do any more of them (sigh).
@setonhillstudios2 ай бұрын
So glad you enjoyed this! I absolutely loved his voice and can’t wait to hear more! So many people have been talking about that version with K.D. Roy started with Sun Studios in 1956, just as Elvis was leaving for RCA Records. I got to meet Roy when my brother produced a concert by him at the Lynn Massachusetts City Hall Memorial Auditorium, just north of Boston in 1988. He was one of the nicest people I ever met. I had heard he was shy, but he didn’t appear shy at all, just soft spoken. When we took pictures he asked us to take one of him alone with my grandmother for her. Unfortunately the concert wasn't well attended because the Boston Bruins announced the last game of the Stanley Cup playoff on the same evening of the concert after most of the tickets were sold. The concert was awesome, but I was even more amazed when Roy came up to my brother and said he felt bad that my brother might lose money on the deal through no fault of his own. He then offered to help him by doing a concert the following year. He said he would see that my brother made good profits and made up any loss by only compensating Roy with a hotel room and transportation and he wouldn't take any other fees or any portion of tucket sales! What a caring person he was. Unfortunately the second concert never happened as Roy passed away from a heart attack that September. RIP Roy Orbison ❤
