Not long after this performance, His only child Selena set off to her first year of college, when she was involved in a single car crash that took her life. His wife, Jackie died of cancer 9 months later. So he went on a 5 year pilgrimage alone, riding his motorcycle from Alaska to Belize and all points in between. He wrote a book about his whole experience with loss and dealing with it. The book is called "Ghost Rider" and I highly recommend it. He was a tremendous talent as a writer and lyricist... RIP Professor.

Whoever said don't compare Peart's lyrics to rap was being dumb. Poetry is poetry, bars are bars.

@@ChronicExcessiveManliness Hey mister thesaurus, loquacious means "full of excessive talk" so it's not the word you want. Too many Rush fans are pompous about it, alas. Blanket statement about rap as though it's all the same and devoid of good poetry just exposes your ignorance.

Maybe my favorite Rush tune, another similar banger off the same Permanent Waves album is Jacobs Ladder. 😊

Truly one of my favourite Rush songs. The studio version is a bit longer so I suggest listening to it as well. I am like you I do enjoy the live performances more than just the audio. Fun fact. They wrote this song in two days! 🤯 I will suggest Jacobs Ladder from the R40 tour also Dinner with Rush A "business meeting " where the wine and the jokes flowed all evening. Cheers

Whoever made that stupid comment about lyrics and bars not being the same thing needs to get off their high horse. Lyricists, poets, and anyone else who writes words to be delivered musically and rhythmically is “turning a phrase”, “spitting bars,” or however you want to describe it. Some rock snobs are so afraid to have their precious art form associated with or compared to rap and hip hop that it’s both pathetic and hilarious. I love hearing Neil’s amazing lyrics being refers as bars because they warrant that superlative.

@@ChronicExcessiveManliness Explain how without just saying "Peart's lyrics are better than rap lyrics." You don't have to like rap, but "bars" just means good verse, so the "apples and oranges" view doesn't make sense. Good verse comes in all varieties and styles.

The “rap influenced” song from Rush is called Roll The Bones. It’s a very divisive song in their catalog for a lot of Rush fans.

The reason why this performance is a little shorter than the original recording is because they left out this verse from Part 3: Art as expression, Not as market campaigns Will still capture our imagination; Given the same state of integrity, It will surely help us along... Another track from Permanent Waves that you may like is Entre Nous, which they performed live on the Snakes And Arrows Tour video. Cheers from Toronto! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

TOP 2 of all time. This song lyrically and musically represent the quintessential Rush formula/model that would serve them well through 40+ years of SERIOUSLY quality music. Roll the Bones is the 1991 album and title track with their take on rap. When they were FINALLY inducted into the RRHOF in 2013(eligible from 1999 but never nominated)they kick it with RUN DMC on the final jam session of the ceremony. You should check that out as well.🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎹🎤

No reference to any hip hop styles in 1980 dude. These are the originators of this sound and it never gets old. Masters at their craft and the three of them sounded like 6 people in the band. We need to give credit where credit is due. Love hearing this; it’s fire…..🔥🔥🔥

"Wheels within wheels in a spiral array" -- a dna strand. I've been listening to this song since it came out, and it took me until I saw a video of one of their concerts sometime between 2005-2010. To be fair, I didn't know what dna was in 1980 when I was 13-14 years old, and it just never clicked until then.

Just so ya know... and it may have been pointed out already. The video behind stage is a cellular concept (biological spiral array) to go along with the songs theme... not extraterrestrial images. The theme is based on the 'rat race' going all the way down to the elemental cellular level. "All the busy little creatures chasing out their destinies Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea" is a prime verse. Peart was ahead of his time. Even today, as microscopes get better and better, we see that mycoplasma cellular activity is alive and well and appears to live in its own 'little' world. Metaphorically getting caught up in it's hurried little life and forgetting about the bigger picture. Appreciate your vids man!

Good on Lad! You really seem to "get" what Rush was always about. I truly wish you could have seen them live. I'm an auld Scotsman frae the Ayrshire Coast. I saw Rush for the first time in 1976. You can get a good idea of what that was like from the live version of "Bastille Day" from the album All The World's A Stage - I was there for the Saturday night show. Massey Hall in Toronto and Seattle at the Paramount NW in October '76 for the All The World's A Stage tour - who tours a live record? You put out the love album so DON'T HAVE TO TOUR‼️ Not for the bands that made their reputation by playing live.

When you react to something you have to react from the place you are at in your musical and life journey. Use what you know to express what you think. Enjoy the experience as you go in your own way and those who want to can follow along or not as fits their journey.

It's your channel, do your own thing. I get how you think in bars, sometimes I do too. With Neil's lyrics look for things like alliteration and metaphor (cool literary tricks he likes to use) like in the song, "The Trees" that you reacted to. In the song he compares humans to little creatures that live in tide pools and can't see the big picture. Being a poet, you'll probably appreciate the song Jacobs Ladder which uses both alliteration, metaphor and some bars. The song that has actual bars (rapping) is "Roll the Bones." A BIG departure for them. That said, the song has an incredible message.
