In brief, this was about German mercenaries that had rebelled against their patrons, who hadn't paid them, and the mercenaries literally sacked Rome. They also attacked the Papal grounds. The Pope needed to get away, and his Swiss guards led him to safety; however, some had to hold back the attacking mercenaries, and they were slaughtered by the mob. However, they won enough time for the Pope to escape.

And now that you have heard this song, just imagine Sabaton performing this song on May 6th 2027 in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome - to the day 500 years after the events that song is about. How epic would that be? Maybe even with the Basilica's organ adding to the performance? Holy heck! I get goosebumps just from imagining that..

Their CDs are named by what they are focused on "Carolus Rex" is focused on Swedish History, "Heroes" is focused on Heroes from various wars, "Primo Victoria" is Focused on WW2, "The Last Stand" is focused on famous Last Stands, "Great War" and "War To End All Wars" are both focused on WW1. Also to answer your question the song "The Last Stand" is about the Siege of Rome and the Sacking of the Vatican in 1527. The primary focus is on the Swiss Guard, the Vatican and the Pope's guards. As the lyrics say 42 of the 189 members of the Swiss Guard that were in service at the time had to spirit the Pope away during the Sacking of the Vatican to save him, the other members all held off the enemy troops, sacrificing their lives ultimately in vain as the Pope was forced to capitulate a few months later. The forces that participated in the Siege of Rome were all Soldiers that were denied their pay by their liege lords and so they banded together to get what they viewed they were owed.

Song refers to Sacking of Rome.. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V decided to threaten Papal States (which was an actual country during that time(~quarter the size of modern Italy). However, due to mutiny the soldier went on their own and decided to.. well.. sack Rome.. Original threat was 20k soldier to threaten war.. but during the mutiny, 189 of the swiss guard were killed but the gave save passage to the pope.. While not the only reason, its one of the reasons popes even today have swiss guard.. you cannot become a guard of the pope unless you have swiss citizenship.
@Greywander87

The plot of this song: Angry mercenaries who hadn't been paid ("they'd been abandoned by their lords") decide to sack Rome, including the Vatican (the Holy See). 189 Swiss Guards hold off the mercs while the Pope makes his getaway with 42 other Swiss Guards through a secret passage to Castel St. Angelo. The 189 all end up dying, but the pope escapes to the castle successfully. The Swiss Guard is not just guards who are Swiss, they are the elite guardsmen of the Vatican, basically the papal version of the Secret Service.

Most of Sabaton's songs are based around military history and battles. They have been supported by the video game company " Wargaming " Who put out the games World of Tanks, World of Warplanes and World of Warships. Including help in producing the videos " Primo Victoria " and " Bismarck " ( Watch the video for Bismarck and there is a bit at the end of the video that reads. War knows no nation. This video is dedicated to those who fought to the bitter end in the battle of the Atlantic. )

The Sack of Rome is very important for English history as well as making the end of the Italian High Renaissance so I suspect that your history teacher will know about it. The reason the Sack of Rome is important is though the mercenaries were running amok in Rome and threatened the Pope was that the Pope Clement VII, who was protected by the Swiss Guard, was ultimately under the "care" of Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor, basically a prisoner of the Emperor. How did this effect English history? Charles V was the nephew of Catherine of Aragon first wife of Henry VIII and when he wanted to divorce her he needed to appeal to the pope but the pope was the prisoner of Charles V so there was no divorce Henry then made the cynical move to side with the protestants and England went protestant Henry gave himself a divorce and married Anne Boleyn etc. and the rest is history so to speak. BTW I was a mathematics teacher and I knew this so I suspect your history teacher knew it too.

Amazing song!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ SHORT FACTS: The outnumbered Swiss Guards, protectors of the Vatican, stood against an invading horde during the sack of Rome in 1527,. Giving their lives so the Pope could escape... The song is based on the perspective of those people,. & how driven & Loyal they were to their faith in order to sacrifice their lives... -It's very Deep❤

In summary, the song is about the Sack of Rome in 1527AD. The Holy Roman Empire (Germany) warred against the Papal States and besieged the holy city of Rome with an Imperial army of 20,000 men made up of mostly Spanish, Italian, and German mercenaries. The Papacy however only had 5,000 Italian militia and 189 Swiss Guard Mercenaries. At the siege's climax, the Imperial Army's commander was killed but instead of retreating at the loss of their leader, the mercenaries instead went wild. Brutally sacking and massacring the holy city. With all hope lost, the pope fled the city while the remaining 189 Swiss Guards made their last stand at the steps of St Peter's Basilica against the rampaging hordes.

basicaly some noble army was sieging Rome for some reasons I can't remember, in the army the fabled, renown and feared Landsknecht german mercenaries and they salaries were late VERY late, so they just thought "fuck it we're gonna sack the enternal city" they charged, slaughtered and sacked as much a possible until stepping foot in the vatican, the papal guard dispatched a rear guard, their mission was to delyed the assault asmuch as possible to permit the pope to enter the castle saint-angelo and be safe, they all died I think, but their misison was accomplished duty, honor, loyalty

As a man of faith, due to my upbringing mostly, this is my favorite song from them. The Swiss Guard is an elite fighting force that guards The Pope, the song takes place in 1527, during The Sack of Rome. Not all of them died and they managed to escort The Pope to the safety of Castle Saint Angelo. They still exist to this day. With the month at hand, I think you should check out the song "No Bullets Fly", which is a great song and story, very in theme with the time of the year, given so many have suggested The Christmas Truce already. PS: Don't miss the Unicorn in the crowd, in the video, lmao

If you want to check out Sabaton History I have a few suggestions. There is the combination of killer songs with great stories: "Ghost division" and "Attack of the dead men", you have already listened to the last one. Or you could go the route of the most WTF story there is, a story that leaves you mindboggled why there aren't at least a dozen major blockbuster movies about it, "Inmate 4859". Unfortunately the song isn't one of their best, but it's one hell of a story.
