This is a little more than a simple cover, there are deeper connections here. Both Shinedown and Lynyrd Skynyrd are from Jacksonville, Florida. Jasin Todd, Shinedowns original guitarist was married to Melody Van Zant, the daughter of the late, great Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant. Shinedown got their first break by playing regularly at a venue in Jacksonville Beach called Freebird Live. That venue was owned by Judy Van Zant, the widow of Ronnie. The guys used to play this as a tribute to Ronnie and a thank you to Judy. Incidentally, in the video there is a little girl holding the picture of a man - the man in the picture is Ronnie Van Zant and the little girl is his grand-daughter. Also in this video you see a cowboy hat on it's own a couple of times - that is a hat that Ronnie used to wear on stage. The best comment I ever read about this was "What people, even Shinedown fans, don't realise is that Shinedown are Lynyrd Skynyrd family".

I grew up to Lynard Skynard performing this song. Based on the vocals on this version, I am blown away and the simple guitar work sound in the background works well. Perhaps one of the BEST covers I have ever hear in my life.

I saw them in Memphis years ago back when they did 96X Fest. These guys are absolutely amazing. Brent's voice is powerful. So often you find yourself disappointed with how bands sound live. Not Brent. My guy's voice will hit you hard.

It eventually grew on me and I feel like this version has a lot more soulfulness from his voice. But the OG is one of my favorite all time songs from any genre, so I don't think any cover could ever top it for me.

My wife and I treated my family to a SHINEDOWN concert in BUFFALO, NY. We met the drummer & guitar player. The guitar player made my sister cry because she bought a SHINEDOWN T-shirt off of a street vender and not them. WE TOLD HIM WE PAYED FOR EVERYONES TICKETS BECAUSE WE WANTED TO SEE THEM. HE DID SAY HE WAS SORRY; HE DID NOT KNOW. Not everyone is able to pay out high dollars for concerts let alone t-shirts...

There is a connection between Shinedown and Lynyrd Synyrd .The guitarist for Shinedown at that time was Jasin Todd. Jasin is married Melody VanZant, the daughter of Synyrds lead vocalist Ronnie VanZant . Shinedown does not play this song at their shows anymore because Jasin is no longer with the band.

They stopped playing it for awhile but they do now, I’ve seen them 3 times since 2014 and they’ve played it every time. There are other connections too, they started performing live in ronnies wife’s bar and the little girl in the video is holding a picture of Ronnie and is his granddaughter. Also the hat the guitarist is wearing was ronnies. This whole video was a tribute to Ronnie.

This cover speaks to the generation. Where the original from the 70s was more nurturing, the generation this one was given to was angry (and still are). It speaks to them in a different tone because the message - while the same words - is a different message to them. Very similar to the angst in Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence. Oh. and Brent Smith is easily one of the most underrate, under appreciated vocalist of the modern era. Truly gifted and brilliant.

Skynyrd is my all time favorite band. Waiting for you to do a Southern Rock stream kicked off with “The Ballad of Curtis Lowe”. Great old bands like Allman Bros, Charlie Daniels, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Outlaws…. When I heard this cover years ago but Shinedown, I was blown away. These guys are awesome.
