These girls were raised on 90’s rap. Their producer Teddy Park is the Kingpin of Korea. He does the vast majority of writing. Teddy grew up in both New York and then L.A. through the 80’s and 90’s on East Coast to West Coast rap. That’s why you recognize that old school flow. He then moved to Korea after his band 1TYM was signed by YG. They dropped multiple hit albums over the years before disbanding and Teddy began writing/producing for YG, creating Idols that have taken over the globe such as 2NE1 and currently BLACKPINK.

Yeah, there’s a TON of girl groups so that’s not why Blackpink is so popular. Blackpink is not like any of the other groups. They worked hard to be on top, trained for years. They are insanely talented and have an insanely talented producer, Teddy, who produces most of their biggest hits.

Their older music DOES have just as much English. Their company intended these girls to be international from pre-debut. Three of the girls are fluent English speakers and all of them speak at least three languages.

There debut songs were Boombayah (only debut ever to have over a million views on YT), and Whistle (only debut to win song of the year domestically) - both these had around a 50-50 split between Korean and English. You can find them, and a LOT more besides, on their official YT channel - kzbin.infofeatured - globally most subscribed artist's channel and #11 of ALL YT channels... Besides the USoA being the worlds biggest market, many other countries also use english, and as Japan is the seond biggest market, they also perform (almost) all their songs in japanese*, too, with some tweaking of the lyrics. It helps, a lot, that they were already experienced with the english language... Rosé - green furry coat - spent her first 14 years, or so, in New Zealand and Australia where we speak english. Jennie - on tank at start - lived in NZ for around 5 years. Lisa - with her dog, Love - learned some english at school. Jisoo - the Givenchy (sp?) dress - is the only one who had to learn from scratch, still hesitant using it (she's adorable when she does, though) but understands it quite well. *learning that was part of their training, because of that. Between them, they can cover 7 or 8 languages between being fluent/native speakers to basic conversation level.

Loved to watch reaction videos on Blackpink. It’s so interesting to see how first timers react. Many do over-react and it’s just too much for me, so I like yours. It’s seems more genuine, at least to me. Keep watching. BlackPink is the current Majesty. They are fortunate to have a great creative producer who has advanced vision of what’d sell and how to market. Together with their insane beauty and talents, they are quite invincible right now. They deliver every single time becos they are so diversify in their productions. Typa of girl and Shutdown have deep meaning about their journey and their shares of haters. In a way, I feel they ‘can be' thankful to the haters and jealous competitors who ‘inspired' them to express their innermost thoughts through their MVs. Those Ozzy raps by Jennie and Lisa, (especially) are intended for the haters, listen carefully and you will get it.

You have to realise that Blackpink actually have to accommodate for Koreans as well as the west. Unlike all the groups you mentioned that they sound like or get a vibe from, these ladies actually trained to be singers, rappers, dancers etc. You will realise once you hear more and understand.

I don't think there is lack of girl group considering I am from 90's. I would say there are more girl group comparing 90's era and competition is also tight. May be you have not discovered those groups yet. I would say in terms of influential group, Blackpink is way ahead of any gg group right now. ADDITIONAL 'FRIENDLY' REMINDER before you going deep into the rest of their discography i'd have to remind you that every song by them usually would always have such a different vibe nor different type of production to each other, ofc there's gonna be some similarities between each albums but their music in general always been known for having no musical boundaries (especially when it comes their genre's choices), i mean eventhough most of the time their music does have that edgy hip-hop flare into it (like the ones that you saw until now) but it doesn't mean that they gonna have some rap lines for every single song, so sometimes they do have few songs that fully focusing on melodic lines instead of their normal stuff which mostly have raps and yeah after few songs that you've reacted so far i just hope that you'd willing to keep your personal expectation in such a neutral way so the "shock" value and the pureness of your "first-time impression" would always stay organic as it should be

Good reaction. Most reactors note the classical music sample and note the fusion of the classic violin solo "La Campanella" by Niccolò Paganini with the group's signature hip-hop sound. Check out their song "Pink Venom" MV (90 million views first 24 hours, came out about a month ago), much more loud and proud Blackpink. And if you are really interested in hearing their vocal talents, in an all English song, react to their song "Happiest Girl" (no MV, just audio on KZbin), think Adele. This is totally against type for Blackpink, but many reactors favorite song on their album.

Well, Blackpink's music has always had a lot of English, since 3 of them speak it fluently. Rap has also always been in their music since their main producer was an underground rapper, and their company was founded under the influence of hip hop, their company is the cradle of many good Korean rappers. What do you think of them as rappers, I mean Jennie and Lisa, what is your opinion about their flow? Personally I think they have a lot of potential if they wanted to be rappers outside of kpop.
