I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "Kathy's Song", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.

Simon and Garfunkel were the premier folk singers, the epitome of the genre. There's no such thing for me as growing tired of their music. Now that you've discovered them, you'll want to explore lots of their music. When they broke up, Art Garfunkel went on to do a few things, but Paul Simon is the one who continued to have a great career. He's a consummate songwriter and writes unique songs that are fascinating and sophisticated. His work is just as mesmerizing to explore as what the two of them together produced. As for Disturbed's version, sure, it's haunting and intriguing, but it doesn't hold a candle to the beauty of S&G's performance. Plus, it irritated me that people would call it Disturbed's Sound of Silence when they'd upload their own cover of the song on KZbin. It's Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence, dammit! Not Disturbed's!

@Larry Studer No kidding Larry. The original studio version is absolutely the best. That being said, I think that they did just fine in Central Park. A live performance with a half million people watching and who knows how many on TV. If I'm not mistaken, weren't they broken up and decided to do this in Central Park? I think that's why the people reacted like they did. Kind of a 'Welcome Back' applause from the fans.

When Paul Simon heard David Draiman's performance of this song, he said that when he and Art Garfunkle sang it in the 1960s it was a warning regarding the trend toward self-absorption, and when Disturbed performed the song it was a chastisement for people not heeding their warning a half-century earlier.

The song was written in 1964 and inspired by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Without a LONG history. America was at a time of civil rights, possible nuclear war with Russia, etc. etc. Here comes a young, handsome, smart guy, beautiful wife, two young children, that was the start of a new generation in politics. Then was so quickly taken from everyone. When it happened, America at that time was more than devastated. Then Paul Simon wrote the song.....

Jorge, you think like I do. Considering they were Live, they did a good job. It can't be compared to the studio version. All of their songs, just like The Beatles, were done in a studio. So we fell in love with this kind of music. Now we have an opportunity to see a younger generation listening to music and enjoying it just as we did. Who knows? This came out when I was in college and will always be my favorite version. I was not impressed by either the Disturbed nor the PTX version. But there are several other covers that I do like. Geoff Castellucci (from Voiceplay) recently released a solo version; Tim Foust (from Home Free) and Peter Hollens have a duet version on Peter's channel, which is probably my favorite cover; and The Hound and the Fox have a version featuring Adam Chance from Home Free. All 3 are different approaches and all 3 are different from the original, but still respect it. For more Simon and Garfunkel, I recommend the performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water from the same Central Park concert. Art Garfunkel's voice is amazingly, breathtakingly beautiful. Happy listening!

When my sister told me about the Disturbed version I was surprised that she thought it was great. For fifty years I thought it would be pointless to cover it because no one could come close to S&G’s version. I actually did like his take on it when I watched it. I think it works because it’s such a different style, and of course it’s very well done. I’ve seen a lot of reaction videos to this and S&G’s studio version and I think this is the first time I’ve seen negative comments about the Disturbed cover (from other commenters, not you). It’s mentioned a lot and everyone seems to like it, which is a HUGE compliment.

This concert is worth a watch in its entirety. Simon and Garfunkel had been broken up for a full decade when the city of New York arranged this concert to pay for the much needed upkeep to the city's largest green space. At this point, they did not get along personally, and their musical careers went in wildly different directions. Still, they performed like consummate professionals, and sang many of their biggest hits. New York was hoping 300,000 people might attend. More than a half million showed up to the park, and many were turned away. People didn't care, and went to the rooftops of many of the buildings that were close by. At the time, this was the 7th largest live concert ever in US history.

DON'T YOU DARE compare this song to Disturbed or Pentatonix who had not even been born yet. You (like every other reactor) are so deluded by other decades and genres of music that you can't possibly know the impact this song and duo had on a million people that gathered around Central Park to pay homage to these two artists. They originally did this epic song back in the 60s when no one else could write and perform like them. I suggest you stay away period from making comparisons to any song (work of art) and take it as is. Don't try and interject styles or instruments. This song touched the world back in the 60s and in the 80s at Central Park. Disturbed and Pentatonix did their version of it. But never try to make any comparison... Especially without knowledge of the musicians and the social, technological, and cultural background that spawned an iconic hit like this. Simon and Garfunkel also wrote and performed Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Don't make their fantastic version of that song subject to any other artist's version. Thanks and keep learning.

The real story behind the song The Sound of Silence: Simon had started writing “The Sound of Silence” late in 1963, as a response to the assassination of John F Kennedy, a hero of his, on November 22. He took his guitar into the bathroom where he liked the acoustics and, as was his habit, turned off the light and sat there playing.

At this point, except for record in 1975 called My Little Town" S and G had not sung together since about 1970. They had parted ways. This was a reunion concert, Sound of Silence was released in 1965/66, it was their first national/international hit then. I hate Disturbed's version.. It's too much death and Darth Vader, over the top for me. THIS is the real version, live...they are doin it slower than the original record here...mentioning Disturbed in the same sentence as Simon and Garfunkel who are legends, is a bad joke to me. to say you're listening to a stripped down musical components version here is ridiculous in a way...this was the original sound of this song, which came first, when there was nothing to strip down. This is the way they had to perform it on the road n the 1960's when they were young, just two voices and one guitar.

Disturbed butchers this song. S&G studio version of this song is 100% better. Reaction ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Selection ⭐⭐

Outstanding version here--no need to gild the lily by adding extraneous effects. Also, recognize that Paul is singing the lower harmony AND playing guitar while Art is singing the melody. Just perfect!

This is how Simon & Garfunkel wanted the song to sound like. The recording company, when this song was originally released, insisted on the "wall of sound" after the 1st verse, which made the song quite a bit different than S&G wanted. You should listen to that version as well, just for comparison's sake. But this is how they wanted it.

Don't forget that they wrote this in 1964 which was a peaceful time not a dark time like when Disturbed did it. I don't like when people call the original as a version, which true but they wrote it to have the message that they did. It is easy to to do a remake of the original and make your own. It is the ORIGINAL IN 1964.

While Disturbed did a great cover of this song 50 years after the original, it is insulting to S&G to put his effort in the same category as the originators. When you realize the scope and importance of S & G and Paul's solo work to the American Songbook, you will realize what we are talking about.

The Simon and Garfunkel version is still the best. Their harmonies aren’t as perfect here, because the had split up and came back to do this concert. I much prefer their earlier versions. Disturbed’s version is an “ angry “ one , where as S&G’s version is softly sorrowful, the way I think Paul intended when he wrote it.

This original is very airy and light, which doesn't match the lyrics(still my favorite) but Disturb's cover matches the lyrics much better(great interpretation of the song)

You have to take into account the era this song was done also. The culture was much different, and many folk singers were trying to promote peace and quell some of the violence in the world. The original will always be the best. That's why today many songs sound so negative and dark, because our culture is. And they all "pray to the neon god" don't they?

Why do the Reaction videos always choose this video from Central Park. It will not give you the Best reaction. They hadn't played together for years when they did this. Try the Recorded version. It's Besutiful and the Best.

You should definitely react to John Farnham singing Bridge over Troubled Water. In my opinion it is far superior to this version.

Still find it hilarious when the original craftsmen of songs are somehow thought to be inferior to cover artists who came along 50 years later. The original arrangement and recording reflects the songwriters' intent - covers are an interpretation of lyrics to suit another artist's genre. So if you prefer metal to folk, you will always prefer the metal version whether it really reflects the original feeling or meaning or not. Every S&G song, no matter how many times covered, is always best by S&G.
