This song is about Mick Hucknall's troubled childhood. His mother left when he was about 3 years old and left him with a father whom he didn't really get along with. He always hoped his mum would come home, but she never did. I think that's where the line about all those wasted tears and wasted years comes from.

Mike Hucknall wrote this when he was 17 years old,and where he got the name Simply Red is because he supports Manchester United which are called the Reds, this was his first hit song in 1985 from the wonderful album Picture Book, best wishes from Scotland.

Elvis was in the Army for 2 yrs and when he came back he started making movies, so in 1968 he wanted to start doing music, but he was afraid that people wouldnt like him anymore. So he had a tv special.1968 come back special.

Mick Hucknall. Some of the film location was in Whitby, North Yorkshire, famous for ruined Whitby Abbey, that inspired the writing of Dracula, by Bram Stoker. Stars album and single is a great start Steven.

Wikipedia-The group's frontman Mick Hucknall wrote the song when he was 17, while living at his father's house. In a 2018 interview, Hucknall said the song was inspired by a member of the teaching staff at Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall was a fine-art student: the lecturer suggested the greatest paintings are produced when the artist is working in a stream of consciousness, which Hucknall then tried to apply to songwriting - "Holding Back the Years" was the second song he wrote using this method

Mick Hucknall has a unique voice that is so soulful. I love this song and "If you don't know me by now" is a similar vibe to this. " Other great hits are include a very political song at the time (80's)-Money's too tight to mention. My absolute favourite The Right Thing, Something got me started, Stars, and the absolutely gorgeous song For your Babies. This channel has introduced me to some great new music and also took me down memory lane, enjoying the songs from growing up. Thank you for taking the time to share your love of music

Who, when they were coming of age as boy, didn't have a fantasy about an older woman teacher. I can relate to Mick's journey, having left home at 17yrs old and set out to make a life for myself. At eighty one (81) I find this song very nostalgic. "Simply Red" brought a new feel to the popular music scene of the eighties. Genius

Mick Bucknell is the lead singer. Although Simoly Red intially broke up (in the 90s, I think) they're together today. Their most recent album was in 2023. I'm not sure how many members are original. Mick is still their vocalist.

It's funny that you mentioned "Milly Vannily", but in this case, it was the trumpet player that was "lip syncing". As a former trumpet player, I can tell you that the trumpet in the audio was playing with a mute, which is a thing that is inserted in the bell of the trumpet that gives it more of a kazoo sound. But the trumpet in the video didn't have a mute in it, so he was faking playing it.😂

This was a tribute to MLK who was assassinated a few months prior to this live TV event. Elvis insisted this be included in the special and that he end the performance with it. With the background of the times hanging over Elvis and our nation I often rate this as the best musical performance ever.

Great reaction. Simply Red is a band and the legend that is Mick Hucknall is the singer. He actually lived round the corner from me going up in a place called Denton, Manchester UK. His father worked as a Barber in Stockport. His mother left when he was very young and he wrote this song as his troubles with that and being brought up by his father on the poverty line when he was 17. His voice is amazing and you should check the live version to this when Mick got to play at his beloved Old Trafford Ground (Manchester United Football Team .... the "Red"s). I attach link. The song is from about 40:50 minutes in but it is a MUST DO. He's got so many hits and his voice is as good as it is today as back then. Natural born talent, like our other UK gem "Queen". Stay safe from Manchester UK kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXXGi42chM2CppY
