You guys! The world needs more relationships like the one you share. Please keep digging on Sly & The Family Stone. This was a perfect place to start. “Stand” is thinking peoples’ music. And their set at Woodstock at around 3 a.m., urgently singing and playing “I Want to Take You Higher.” They knew how to wake everybody up and get them moving! Thank you for this one.

Joel Selvin wrote, "there are two types of black music: black music before Sly Stone, and black music after Sly Stone". Upon its February 1968 release, "Dance to the Music" became a widespread ground-breaking hit, and was the band's first charting single, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2010, they were ranked 43rd in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and three of their albums are included on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Great band from the 60's-80's. Their sound was a mixture of funk, soul, rock & psychedelic music. They had a lot of hits such as "Dance To The Music", "Everybody Is A Star", "Sing A Simple Song", "Family Affair", "Remember Who You Are", "Stand" "I Want To Take You Higher" etc.

BJ is very close on this; the breakdown was sampled by Jam and Lewis for Rhythm Nation by Janet Jackson, the title track of her 1988 smash album Rhythm Nation 1814. This funk is on another level, giving rise to Parliament, Funkadelic and Bootsy, and many others.

It's a literal sample during a time when sampling technology in hip-hop was becoming more groundbreaking (see Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation of Millions... and De La Soul 3 Feet High & Rising). I'm an old school funk musician, and I tell y'all how it fills me with such joy to see you kids enjoying your musical heritage like this; the feeling is just undescribable 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤. Sly stone, and of course: James Brown. They were the ones who really kicked off the funk era. Over the years we just got funkier and funkier. Just like the young man said: that funk was all the way funky, without any deodorant. Unapologetically funky 🫢🫢

I went to a concert to see sly and the family Stone in 1969, he was top of the charts and the place was sold out. He was an hour late starting the show. Back then they were known to be late so it wasn’t some thing that we didn’t know. But once he got on the stage with that band nobody cared that he was late! Nobody sat down, everybody sang along with the songs and he was out there telling everybody let’s do it sing it loud I wanna hear you… Great performers back in the day😊
