As an ENZ fan from New Zealand, I believe the song may actually be about a fellow founding member of the band, with whom Tim had a deep, tortuous, love/hate relationship that almost destroyed the band. The band member left, leaving Tim free, but with the burden of being the primary song writer and front man until the arrival of his brother in the band. A lament for a failed relationship, dressed up as a love song.

I believe that Tim wrote this about the departure of songwriter Phil Judd from Split Enz. Phil and Tim had been friends since college when they formed the band. They had an often fractious relationship, but I think Tim thought a lot of him and really admired his talent. He was very hurt and angry about the way things ended. So although this can be interpreted as the breakup of a romantic relationship, it is about the end of a friendship* and working relationship. As well as Tim's voice, this song showcases the playing of keyboardist Eddie Rayner. Eddie had classical training and his swooping, dramatic, Richard Clayderman-esque style added so much to Split Enz's sound. *They did work together later. But I don't think they ever really repaired their friendship, and Phil has unfortunately struggled with his mental health over the years.

Another Kiwi here who got this video suggested to me by the KZbin AI. It's great to see a positive reaction to the music being created while I was growing up here. I never thought this one was one of their strongest, but it is good. New Zealand had a vast pool of massively talented musicians and bands dating way back, to the likes of Ray Columbus through to the 60s, 70s, and 80s and on. Being sandwiched right between UK and US culture I think we could take our pick of the best styles and ideas, but sadly in that period our technical and physical isolation meant a lot of those acts just didn't make it much further than the Australian pub scene, or they formed up with Australians, eg Crowded House to make some inroads in the US charts. The biggest breakthroughs to of my mind would be Crowded House, OMC ("How Bizarre" ) and more recently Lorde. My top recommendations for the era though would be Th' Dudes "That Look in Your Eyes", No Tag "No Tag" (not very good recordings on YT though) and Tex Pistol & Rikki Morris "Nobody Else" for a bit of a cross section but by no means complete.

*@Son of Buck* If you like this, you may like 'Counting the Beat' by 'The Swingers'. The band was formed by Phil Judd after he split the enz and went on to team up with two of Midnight Oil's future band members. Which reminds me, beside great Aotearoa-NZ music, check out Aussie's, 'Midnight Oil'. "The Power and the Passion" was their big break out hit, IIRC. I saw them play at a pub here in Christchurch and on came Peter Garrett (lead vocalist) and he pulled his hat off. Here was this absolute giant of a man throwing himself up in the air like he was coming into adolescence on a trampoline. One of my greatest band memories of the time. 1982.., again IIRC.

From my memory, Disco was virtually gone by 1980. Australian and NZ bands were really coming into their own and British bands were getting big here then too. I’m going by what I remember playing at our skating rinks and what I was hearing on the radio. Just my memory. I could be wrong though. ❤️

Spilt Enz were an amazing band who moved to Oz and found greater success. Underrated until Crowded House took the mantle. Great music writers and a blessing from NZ. Love the Enz and Crowded House world class.
