Stan is of Maori decent from Aotearoa New Zealand. He won Australian Idol in 2009 but lives in NZ. This song was written and produced specifically for the movie "Origin" by Stan & Co in 2 1/2 weeks at the request of the Producer/Director Ava DuVernay. Stan has a very diverse discography with plenty of covers and originals. "Maori Ki Te Ao" is his latest release. Checkout - "New Takeover", "Ultralight Beam", "Amazing Grace", "New Light" etc

Wonderful reaction ! Thank you for that. I'm a little surprised no-one suggested you listen to ' Don't Dream It's Over ', by another Kiwi, the brilliant Neill Finn, with his band ' Crowded House ' . Neill was chosen by Mick Fleetwood to front ' Fleetwood Mac '. Stan's rendition is outstanding, and again includes a large segment in Te Reo Maori, the language of the indigenous people of Aotearoa. In a couple of hours I will be watching ' Origin '. I may leave the theatre in tears !!

I would suggest you watch/listen to Stan's cover of the Kanye West song Ultralight Beam. That performance was what prompted Ava DuVernay (film director) to seek Stan out to write this piece for her movie Origins, using social media to connect with him. Based on what I've seen in interviews, Ava didn't seek any change to the song at all. This is what Stan created and it was released as is.

Where he does the chorus in the Maori language come one of the oldest people in Aotearoa. They aren't the 13th Century migration people. They pre-date those people by millennia. It's called Okahukura upon which the big mountains sit. Also the name of my ancestral Wharepuni (House) that sits on the slopes of Matua te Toa or Tongariro as it is called today. They are the descendants of Ruatipua. Cool reaction bro.
